Although it took almost all of Rosalie’s effort to suppress the raging hatred in her voice, her soft voice was still imbued with a vicious aura, an edge. By then, Dorothy had completely sobered up, and she immediately let go of Credence’s arm. She looked down at herself and realized that she was in an absolutely sorry, awkward state.
Her body was wet while her hair was still trickling with water. The blue dress tightly clung to her body like second skin, accentuating her curves.
Credence stood where he was, with no expression on his face. He did not answer Rosalie’s question, and his face and breaths were filled with the chill of ice shards.
Rosalie ignored the embarrassment on Dorothy’s face. She walked over and held Credence’s arm, and said in a sweet and soft voice, “Credence, there are too many women who want to rely on men to get a shortcut. Why, it is not worth getting angry at a woman like that.”
Yvonne stared at Dorothy and remembered that Hugo had been incarcerated in prison for two years and her daughter Sandy, who had to be expelled from kindergarten. She was so furious that her eyes turned red. She patted Rosalie and faintly looked at her, blinking her eyes in surprise and pretended to say casually, “Why, hello. Isn’t this the secretary of J&D Group’s president? I heard that you are also Juelz’s girlfriend. He’s outside, looking for you everywhere. How odd, what are you doing here?”
“Miss Fisher, don’t you know that Mr. Scott is Rosalie’s fiancé? You’re completely wet, and your clothes are unkempt. Don’t you think it’s inappropriate to talk to Mr. Scott like this?”
At first, Dorothy had been frank, for she had no intentions of seducing Credence. However, after hearing Yvonne’s words, it occurred to her she might have looked like someone who had ulterior motives.
Faced with mortification, Dorothy regained her composure. She tilted her head and looked at Rosalie and Yvonne. Finally, she settled her gaze on Credence’s expressionless face. For the first time, he did not show any hatred or emotion. She chose her words calmly, “Sorry, I’ve had too much to drink. Please ignore everything I’ve said and did just now. You are the bigger person, yeah? Just act as if nothing has happened.”
She was honest and upright, giving a necessary apology for her actions. Thus, Rosalie and Yvonne were rendered speechless.
Credence, on the other hand, gazed at Dorothy’s calm face. Despite that, he picked up the stubbornness, despair, and pain hidden in the bottom of her watery eyes.
She looked as if he had done many, many things to mistreat her.
How could that be possible?
He knew he was not a good person, but harming a powerless and weak woman was not in line with his character.
She must be acting. She had to be.
From the few times she had tried to accost him, it was obvious that she was putting on a show for him.
Credence pushed away the strange feeling in his heart. Not sparing so much as a glance at either Dorothy or Rosalie, he turned around and walked away indifferently.
“Credence, wait for me.”
Rosalie had been scowling at Dorothy, but when she saw Credence walking away, she anxiously caught up to him.
Ever since she had pleaded with him to help raise the Fisher Group’s stock price, he had been frigid and impassive to her.
In private, he had never been intimate with her. However, if necessary occasions dictated so, he would save her some face. However, he still acted indifferent towards her, like they were keeping it professional.
However, Rosalie would not throw in the towel just yet. Back then, he had even been tempted by the plain Jane, Dorothy. Who said that she wouldn’t have a chance?
…
Credence walked through the dark corridor. Upon reaching the elevator door, his phone suddenly rang.
He took it out and glimpsed at it. It was a call from his father’s attending doctor.
He frowned and brought the phone to his ear. He said calmly, “Hello, Credence speaking.”
At the other end of the phone came a heavily accented speech, “Mr. Scott, I have some good news for you. Your father has just opened his eyes, and he tried to say a few words. However, we couldn’t understand him. Unfortunately, none of the doctors and nurses here can…”
For a long time he had been bracing himself for the other shoe to drop, yet he had received such a huge surprise all of a sudden. Even if Credence was a mature and introverted man who was prone to concealing his emotions, the ice in his heart immediately thawed.
He slowly moved the phone away from his ear, as if he could only breathe calmly when he was far from the phone.
After around seven or eight seconds, he opened his mouth. He spoke in a clear and cold, leveled voice, “Are you saying that my father will wake up soon?”
“Yes, that might be the case, but there’s no guarantee.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“He did wake up for a while, but after less than half a minute, he fell back into a coma. So, I think that this must have been a special day for him. His consciousness in his brain urged him to wake up.”
“Okay, I understand.”
After burying the phone back into his trouser pocket, Credence frowned. He stepped into the elevator with his eyes narrowed, repeatedly thinking about what the attending doctor had said.
Was today a special day for Sheldon?
What on earth had occurred on this day?
His brows furrowed, and he mulled over it for less than half a minute before calling Victor and asking him to investigate everything about Sheldon as soon as possible.
When his figure disappeared along with the elevator, Rosalie and Yvonne emerged from the dark corner together. They looked at each other, one recognizing the worry in the other’s eyes.
Obviously, they had overheard Credence’s conversation on the phone clearly.
Rosalie was so afraid that her face blanched, her sharp long nails sinking deeply into her tender palm. The more pain she felt, the soberer she got.
Yvonne was the first to come to her senses. She swept her eyes over the busy corridor, took Rosalie’s arm and pulled her aside, whispering, “Mr. Scott’s father is about to wake up. What are you going to do?”
Back then, Rosalie had asked for a hallucinogenic from her, and she had given her a good few doses. However, the amount had not been enough to be deadly.
Yvonne was well aware of Rosalie’s malevolent character. If something went wrong, Rosalie would definitely put the blame on her without hesitation.
After some time, when she had heard that Sheldon had been pushed off the balcony by Dorothy and had fallen into a coma, Yvonne knew Rosalie must have used the drugs on him after he had stood in her way of marrying Credence and even planned to bring Dorothy to Credence’s bed. Just like that, Credence had married Dorothy instead of Rosalie.
Therefore, on one hand, Yvonne had to rely on Rosalie’s family. However, she was also afraid of how cruel Rosalie was.
One had to be wary of walking together with a tiger at all times.
“What should we do?”
Rosalie smiled faintly, and the expression of cruelty on her face changed, “It’s very simple. Dead men tell no tales. There won’t be a chance for him to reveal the truth.”
Sheldon was going to wake up. That was devastating news for her.
Six years ago, without a heads-up, Credence had secretly transferred Sheldon to be treated in Monticello. She had never got any information out from him, and that had made Rosalie into a cat on hot bricks.
Two months ago, he had still needed to extract blood from Caleb and send it to Sheldon. He must have found someone else whose blood was compatible with his father’s, so there was no need for him to draw Caleb’s blood anymore.
If it weren’t for the fact that she had gone above and beyond to get Credence to grant her the title of his fiancée, the Fisher family would have long gone bankrupt and gotten demoted into ordinary citizens.
She thought she could tie the knot with Credence without a hitch at the end of this year and be promoted to Mrs. Scott. Never had she anticipated that Dorothy would show up once again.
Dorothy, who had disappeared for six years, had suddenly returned, dragging her weak and sick daughter, who had leukemia, with her to cause trouble. Sheldon was about to wake up too, and these glitches in her plan would be like all hell break loose for her.
It didn’t matter, because if he was dead, no one could stop her from marrying Credence again.
As she thought about it, Rosalie gripped the wall behind her hard. If her face was as cold as ice, then her eyes could freeze the entire world over.
