Credence took out his mobile phone and pressed the answer button. There was a dark pool of indecipherable emotion in his eyes.
On the other end of the line, Rosalie coughed weakly. “Credence, the doctor said that my operation was successful. What about Dorothy? How is she?”
Credence could feel her sincere concern for Dorothy.
Perhaps, Rosalie did not know anything!
Credence’s expression softened a little. However, his face was still gloomy when he replied, “Something happened to her after she gave her kidney to you.”
“What happened? Tell me, Credence. What happened to Dorothy?”
Credence suddenly heard a commotion over the phone. He guessed Rosalie was in a hurry to get up and visit Dorothy in the operating room, but she was stopped by the doctors and nurses. Her delicate voice showed extreme anxiety. “Let go of me! All of you, let me out! I want to see my sister. What happened to her? What happened? Tell me…”
Upon hearing that, Credence hung up the phone and walked to the monitoring room.
Jonathan caught up to him and asked, “Where are you going?”
“Rosalie is awake. I’ll go to see her. Also, I need to ask the doctor about the details of her operation.”
Credence threw a glance at Jonathan without stopping.
“What’s there to ask? This hospital is not comparable to mine in other aspects. But when it comes to organ transplantation, it’s definitely the best in Talco City. Furthermore, how could Dorothy possibly lose her life by just donating a kidney? Credence, you must investigate this incident thoroughly. If you are busy with your work, I can do it. I’m dying of boredom.”
After recovering from the shock of Dorothy’s accidental death, Jonathan had a hunch that there was something wrong with the whole situation. He was determined there was something fishy about it.
Because Credence was deeply involved, he could not see through Rosalie’s true intention. Or perhaps, he was too arrogant, thinking that Rosalie would never have the guts to deceive.
Anyway, Jonathan and Marvin did not like Rosalie very much.
If he had to choose between Rosalie and Dorothy, he would rather choose Dorothy. At the very least, Dorothy was kind. She looked gorgeous and was pleasing to the eyes. Also, she did not have the kind of aggressiveness that Rosalie had.
“I will investigate the truth. You don’t have to worry about it.”
There was no expression on Credence’s face. He stared at Jonathan and said in a voice that was as cold as ice, “Perhaps it’s Dorothy’s fate.”
After that, he pushed the door open and entered the monitoring room.
Watching Credence’s back, Jonathan was rendered speechless. He gave a wry smile. It seemed that he should not poke his nose into other people’s business.
After all, Dorothy was Credence’s wife, and he did not even want to seek justice for her. Why should an outsider like Jonathan intervene? It would only ruin their brotherhood.
Jonathan shook his head helplessly. Suddenly, an idea struck him. Then, he turned around and headed toward the direction of the operating room.
Just then, a nurse was pushing a silver-white cart out. It was covered with a layer of white cloth. There seemed to be a young woman beneath the cloth. Her face was shadowy and could not be seen clearly. But her smooth hair could be seen hanging down on her left.
When the cart was pushed past Jonathan, his heart skipped a beat.
“Hang on,” he blurted out.
Jonathan flashed his signature charming smile and walked over to the nurse.
As a figure who could stand next to Credence in Talco City, Jonathan was the eldest son of the Stanton family. He was also the successor of his family’s business empire, and the director of the municipal hospital. As he often appeared on TV, he was as famous as a celebrity. Not to mention, he was handsome. Therefore, he was a popular bachelor among the female nurses and doctors in all the major hospitals. It was their dream to marry him.
His charming smile made the nurse blush. In a daze, she had long forgotten the orders that Rosalie’s attending doctor had given her. She let her hands off the card while Jonathan approached her.
“Thank you.”
Jonathan nodded politely. He then slowly lifted the white cloth.
What he saw was indeed Dorothy’s pale and thin face.
Jonathan’s gaze gradually became sharp. He observed her face meticulously. Soon, he found something unimaginable.
…
When Credence entered the room, Rosalie was lying on the hospital bed. She was in good spirits. A smile appeared on her pale face as she said softly, “Credence, the transplantation was successful. You and Dorothy gave me a new life. I couldn’t thank you more. Dorothy did horrible things to me in the parking lot, but she had atoned for it by donating her kidney to me. Let bygones be bygones. After all, she is my family. I will try to let go of those bad memories.”
“The doctor said that I’m not allowed to get out of the bed for the time being as I need to rest. But… that means I can’t visit Dorothy. I’m really worried. Can you please pay her a visit on behalf of me?”
After that, Rosalie held her hand to her chest and coughed painfully. Her face was red, as if she had used up all her strength.
She had no idea how much Credence would believe her.
Despite the fear Rosalie was feeling deep down, she managed to put on a sincere expression. However, her hands under the cover were already breaking out in a cold sweat.
Credence kept silent. Putting his hands in his pant pockets, he stared at Rosalie with dark eyes. His true feelings were impenetrable.
Rosalie’s heart was pounding in her chest, as if it was about to explode.
She lowered her gaze to hide her panic. “Tell me please. Did something happen to Dorothy?”
“What do you think could happen to her?”
Without looking away, Credence frowned.
As a top student in her acting class, Rosalie was able to cope with crises well. She quickly regained her composure and looked up at Credence with tears welling up in her eyes. “Credence, tell me quickly! What’s wrong with Dorothy? I’ve never thought of wanting her kidney at first. Instead, I put my hope on the organ banks. But my body was deteriorating. If I didn’t undergo kidney transplantation in time, the doctor predicted that I might not survive until next month.”
“Among all my relatives and friends, only Dorothy’s kidneys matched mine. I really had no other choice! If there were other matches, I would certainly not let Dorothy donate hers to me.”
“Credence, there is something else that I want to tell you…. I’ve been hiding it in my heart all along.”
Rosalie paused for a moment. She secretly pinched the flesh around her waist in an attempt to squeeze out tears. “I don’t want to die. I really don’t want to die! I want to spend my life with you. I want to marry you on a warm spring day, and be the happiest bride in the world!”
Her last sentence was filled with emotions. Indeed, those were her heartfelt words.
She had been analyzing Credence’s personality for more than ten years. Judging from his haughtiness and self-conceit, she would have to mix some truth in her lies to not arouse his suspicion.
As expected, there was a trace of emotional fluctuation on Credence’s face. His voice became softer, “Rosalie, Dorothy is dead. She died on the operating table.”
Upon hearing that, Rosalie could not help but shed tears of joy.
However, in Credence’s eyes, those were tears of sorrow over Dorothy’s death.
His eyes softened a little again.
Out of the corner of her eye, Rosalie noticed the relaxed expression on Credence’s face. Deep down, she was delighted, but she opened her eyes wide and looked at him in disbelief.
“Why did it turn out like this? Before I was given the anesthetic, she was still fine.”
Credence withdrew his gaze and looked down at his black leather shoes for a long time. Suddenly, he remembered that the leather shoes were a birthday gift from Dorothy. It was the only gift that he had willingly accepted from her in the last four years. His heart suddenly ached.
He slowly lifted his head, looking calm.
“Rosalie, the wedding that I’ve promised you might need to be delayed.”
