Mia’s pov
The drive lasted for about an hour and throughout that duration, I made sure to lose myself to the coolness of the breeze mining through my hair and brushing over the bareness of my arms and thighs. The jumpsuit I had on wasn’t a long one, so when I sat, it got ridden up.
I sneaked glances at Lorenzo every now and then because all what had happened these past week still feels like it hadn’t happened.
His jaw was clenched and that only made his jawline become more prominent. He had a hand around the steering wheel and while the second one was loosely resting his lap. He didn’t seem to be in a rush to get to his destination, because rhe road looked free but he wasn’t speeding like a maniac like he’d usually do.
When the car finally pulled to a stop, I glanced outside the window at once, eyes darting everywhere at once as I slowly alighted the car and closed the door after me. Once Lorenzo locked the car, he pocketed the key and began to walk forward, and I fell into steps after him almost immediately.
The entire scenery around here was lush and geeen, filled with various trees of different sorts of flowers and some other unidentifiable plants.
He weaved past some of the flowers before we came to a stop in front of a very large tree. I watched as Lorenzo inched towards it and rested one of his hands over it for a few seconds before he finally sit down at the foot of the tree.
This was something I never imagined happening, that he’s the type of person to sit at the foot of trees. When he asked if I wanted to come with him, this was the last thing that could ever cross my mind.
Various thoughts were still going through my mind when he spoke.
“You gonna stand there and watch me the entire time or what?”
His voice pulled me right from my thoughts and I cracked a small smile as I slowly shook my head and closed the distance between us till I was standing beside him, then I carefully lowered myself into a sitting position.
I glanced around the scenery, noting that there was no one else around here, and then I let out a hum as I glanced at Lorenzo who had his back pressed against the tree and his eyes closed.
“Didn’t know you were the type to sit at the foot of trees.” I stated as I glanced over everywhere once again. He cracked one of his eyes open and let out a scoff.
“You don’t know shit about me.” He reminded me and I couldn’t stop myself from rolling my eyes at that response.
“And I don’t sit at the foot of trees, it’s just this one tree.” He continued and then his eyes slid close once again.
“Oh, so this tree means something to you or you just find it beautiful?”
A moment passed before he cracked his eyes open once again.
“Why are you asking me numerous questions? Thought we came here to relax.”
I pursed my lips. “Did we? I had no idea, you didn’t tell me where we were going to, remember?”
“Oh yeah? Well, you can leave if you don’t like it here.” He continued before his eyes slid close and I let out a long sigh because this is the last thing I wanted, for Lorenzo and I to go back to how we once used to be.
I believe we were already making a very huge difference these past week, only for him to switch back to his cold, nonchalant self right now like he didn’t spend the past few days taking care of me and nursing me back to life.
I let out a sigh and pushed my hair out of my face while I began to rack my brain for something to say.
“Lorenzo, I never said I hated it here.” I began after a small hesitation. I didn’t expect him to respond, but once again, he did the unexpected.
“Good for you because I believe you’ve been cooped up for a while and would prefer to be out of the house for a bit.”
A small smile tugged at my lips because he was right. The evening sun was perfectly cool and the shades of the tree provide a coolness that matched the warmth of the atmosphere perfectly.
“We should have brought a picnic along here.” I mumbled as I let out a small yawn.
“Hell no. There’d be no eating here. That’s a huge disrespect.” Lorenzo murmured without bothering to blink his eyes open.
“Why not? This is a perfect spot for a picnic.”
“Because… this tree is special, and definitely not to have a picnic underneath it.” He explained and a mischievous smile graced my face.
“So it is special!” I pointed out. Lorenzo cracked his eyes open this time before speaking.
“I’m gonna go dump you in the middle of a busy road.”
I kept my eyes closed after that, but I knew damn well that he’d never do that, and that made a secret smile bloom on my face.
The silence stretched out between us, but it was a very comfortable one, till I decided to end it.
“Thank you for taking care of me while I was sick.” I murmured. “I really appreciate it.”
“I thought I said something about not thanking me?” He asked after cracking one eye open. I let out a small shrug.
“You did, but I believe you still deserve a thank you, cause you see… no one has ever taken care of me like that before, so it meant so much to me.” I admitted quietly. Lorenzo held my gaze for a few seconds before speaking.
“Not even your mum?”
I averted my gaze after that, as various memories featuring my mum flooded my mind.
When I remained silent, Lorenzo leaned his head back and slid his eyes close. He probably assumed I didn’t want to talk about it, which isn’t a lie. I’ve avoided thinking about my mum, or my twin, because those thoughts bring me nothing but pain.
“You’re welcome.” Those words broke the silence, and it might just be three simple words, but to me, it was more than that.
So much more.
