Wendy immediately snatched Henson’s phone from his hands. “Don’t you dare, Henson! Ian has a girlfriend already, he even showed us her pictures today. They’ve been in a good relationship since their university days,” she explained.
He didn’t seem convinced by that. “Well, it’s not like he can’t break up with her. That Ross of yours you liked had a girlfriend before too, but look what happened?” he huffed.
“How’s this even an equal comparison? I’ve loved Big Bro Ross since I was a kid, while I know nothing about Ian apart from the fact that we work together. Plus, he’s in a stable relationship with his girlfriend, so why are you badmouthing him for? Also, he’s not my type because I like tall men,” she explained.
His brows relaxed a little after hearing that. “The man’s a dwarf?” he asked.
“No, he’s around 1. 78 m, maybe? That’s kind of short to me,” she replied.
He immediately raised his eyebrows in amusement. “Well, what do you think about MY height?” he probed.
“You’re the cream of the crop in terms of height,” she giggled.
Her nonchalant reply made him feel uneasy. “I hope you’re not just saying that to appease me,” he sulked.
“Of course not, just look at Gorman. You two are around the same height, no?” she said.
“I’m taller,” he said and raised an eyebrow. “So, I should be better than him, right?”
She didn’t know how to reply to that and merely rolled her eyes at him. She was also disgusted at herself for bringing up Gorman. “Yes, yes,” she answered.
This also made her realise how easy it was to coax Henson. It seemed like he was the type to ascend to heaven with just a few words of praise.
Even so, she rarely complimented him even after knowing that he’d be a happy boy for a whole day after receiving a few words of praise.
She found it odd after realising that she also applied the same principle to Gorman back then.
Perhaps it was after she learned that people can change that she was more willing to compliment Henson more, even after refusing to do so for Gorman in the past.
It was apparent to her that her personality was slowly but surely starting to change on the inside.
It was lively, if not more this Friday afternoon than it was last week.
Even without Cael in the office, Carmen was still giddy as she was excited to meet Henson later in the afternoon.
As the new recruit for the Business Management Department, Ian naturally took over Cael’s role.
Fully armed with the privilege of being Henson’s personal assistants, Carmen urged them to head to the basketball court early that day.
While Ian had agreed to her request, Wendy, on the other hand, strongly advised against it,
arguing that it was tiring to stand and wait for an hour under the hot sun outside.
Linda also made a hand gesture in agreement. “I’ll head over at 2:40 pm,” she announced.
Carmen and Ian then agreed to leave together at 2:00 pm.
It was only when the clock struck 2:40 pm, that Wendy and Linda started to make their way hand-in-hand to the basketball court.
But when they walked past the female student dorms, Linda noticed a small crowd of students not far away. “Did something happen over there? Why are there so many students gathered there?” she asked and pointed in their direction.
“I see a lot of girls there too. Aren’t they supposed to be inside the basketball court at this time?” Wendy probed, confused.
“Let’s go over to see what’s up,” Linda said and tugged her wrist.
Upon arriving at the female dormitory building, the two of them saw a girl perched on the edge of a balcony, her expression in a daze.
This made Linda panic. “What in the world is happening right now?” she shouted.
Someone in the crowd heard her voice and hurriedly explained, “Ms. Bush, the girl just got cheated on by her boyfriend and I think she’s thinking of committing suicide to end it all!”
The moment the two of them heard this, they exchanged worried looks with one another and made a dash to the upper floors together.
Upon arriving at the entrance of the building, Wendy stopped herself and turned to face the students gathered there. “Someone, hurry up and call the police! Also, to the students staying on the first floor, go get your blankets out. And to every male student who’s here, please lug your mattresses out. Everyone please do your best to chip in before the police and firefighters arrive. If there aren’t enough boys here, please call more,” she hurriedly instructed.
A few nodded, while the others started fiddling with their phones, while the rest followed the two of them inside the building.
When the both of them arrived at the rooftop, they saw three girls standing at a distance from the suicidal girl. They were huddled together and were attempting to coax her.
“Please think this through, Tracy. You’re scaring us,” one of them shouted anxiously.
The both of them then walked to the girls to probe about the situation. “What’s going on right now?” Linda asked.
“Miss, she refuses to talk to us and won’t let us go near her either. We’re really at our wit’s end right now,” one of them explained, worried.
Wendy wanted to try her luck and inched closer to the girl. “Tracy, Miss Evans here. Can we talk?” she asked.
The girl didn’t even turn her head around, but lifted her head to the sky and said nonchalantly, “Don’t you dare come any closer. No matter fast you run towards me, it won’t be as fast as the speed of me jumping off this building,”
“I won’t come any closer. I just want to tell you the story of how I managed to survive getting cheated on,” Wendy said slowly.
The girl fell silent for a while and slowly spun around to face her.
“Do you want to get down from there first? It looks kind of dangerous up there, not gonna lie,” Wendy said through pursed lips and flashed her a caring smile.
The girl started circling the edge of the roof and eventually sat on the floor, facing Wendy. This way, she’d be smashed into smithereens the moment she decides to lean back.
“I know you’re trying to save me, Miss Evans. I can see that you harbour good intentions, but I’m just telling you now that your tricks aren’t going to work on me,” she muttered.
“I’m not trying to trick you. I just want to tell you that it’s not worth it to give up your life for scum like him,” Wendy said.
“No one could possibly understand how I’m feeling right now,” the girl scoffed.
“Who says? I definitely do. Who else on campus is more famous than I am for being the one who got cheated on?” Wendy reasoned.
“But even after you found out that he’d cheated on you, he still pined after you. On the other hand, my ex-boyfriend told me that I could find a better man after he dumped me, and reasoned that the b*tch he was with would have nothing left if he wasn’t by her side. It’s obviously their fault that this has happened, so why am I the one who he chose to break up with? I can’t believe I wasted three years of my youth on this man. He even promised me that he’d marry me after we both graduated next year,” she ranted.
“Yeah, I’m sure you’re also aware that he’s the one who cheated on you, so he’s the one who did a bad thing, so why is it that you’re the one who has to kill yourself? This shouldn’t be how it ends. The only thing you should do now is to live your best life so that you can make him regret leaving you, instead of ending it all just to spite him.
“To a man who doesn’t love you anymore, your death would mean nothing to him, because he wouldn’t even remember you, so he won’t feel guilty for pushing you off the edge. However, there would be two people with graying hair in this world who’d be utterly devastated if they found out that their daughter had killed herself. Why should you pay such a high price for a scum’s actions?”
she shouted and took a few steps forward. “Tracy, if you could please calm down and carefully evaluate the consequences of your actions right now, you’d definitely regret making such a foolish decision by now. Come here and give me your hand. Let me escort you down,” she said and reached out a hand.
Just as she finished, she heard a shout coming from the lower floors. “Tracy!” someone exclaimed.
Tracy’s body instantly stiffened upon hearing their voice, and she spun around to look in their direction.
The sound turned out to be from Howell, who’d raced up the stairs with a few campus guards behind him.
