Wendy merely kept quiet and listened as Ross kept ranting.
After he was finished ranting, he finally ended on a frustrated note. “I’m sure that she won’t give up on me that easily. After all, she’s the one who keeps bringing up the fact that she stood by my side during my hardest times. She definitely won’t let all her efforts all those years go to waste,” he said.
“But what if she keeps clinging onto you after this? What are you going to do then?” she probed.
He looked at her and gave her a weak smile. “Since this is the decision I’ve made, I’m aware that there would come a time where I have to sacrifice everything. Worst case scenario is me no longer working here. I want to see how far she’s willing to go to salvage this broken relationship,” he replied.
“But you just came back from abroad,” she said and frowned.
“I was willing to give up such a great job abroad to come here just for her back then, but I’m also willing to give everything up just to start over again because of her now,” he said firmly.
She had no qualms with that, as her Big Bro Ross was already a grown man. He was big enough to make his own decisions on his own accord, and she had absolutely no right to dictate what he did.
After a long chat, her phone started ringing just as they were about to leave.
She picked up the call immediately after seeing it was Henson who’d called.
“Who is it you’re having lunch with?” he asked.
“Ross. We’re at the hotel near where he works now,” she answered.
“I haven’t had my lunch yet,” he said with a twinge of annoyance in his voice.
“Oh, really? I already ate though,” she snickered.
“Wendy,” he called out her name.
She smiled through pursed lips. “Well, why didn’t you eat anything then? Did someone seal your mouth? Who’d be so bold to do so? Should I send Howell over to teach them a lesson for you?” she joked.
“Oh, shut it, I’m famished. Swing by the company to drop me my lunch, I’ll be waiting. If you don’t come, you better ready yourself for what’s to come tonight,” he threatened.
Before she could get a word in, he’d already hung up.
She didn’t know what to say. He was being really unreasonable right now.
While she stuffed her phone into her bag,
Ross piped up, “Was that Master Henson just now?”
“Yep,” she answered curtly.
“It sure looks like you two are getting along just fine,” he remarked.
“I… guess so?” she said with a shrug.
“I keep hearing people say he’s an unapproachable man, but it seems like the rumours have been inflated quite a bit,” he commented.
She felt somewhat guilty after hearing him say that. If only he could see how Henson dealt with his suitors and subordinates, then he’d know that what he’d said wasn’t too far from the truth.
Regardless, she still felt like she was a lucky woman. At least she herself knew that he was a good guy who was easy to get along with.
“Everyone has two faces, I suppose. It’s only normal for an outsider to think that he’s hard to get along with, but for me, I think that the both of us are peas in a pod,” she said.
He nodded in agreement as he gazed at her. “You’ve really grown a lot, Wendy,” he chuckled.
“I don’t suppose you still see me as a little 10 year-old girl?” she giggled. She then motioned for the waiter to come over so that she could order something for Henson.
“Takeaway, please. Oh, right! Please add as many peppers in there as you can, the spicier the better,” she requested.
After the waiter left, an evil grin crept up on her face. “Hmph, that’s what you get for messing with me, Henson,” she thought to herself.
“By the way, I’ll have to take my leave first after my food to go arrives, Ross. I have to meet up with Henson after this,” she said.
“Sure, I’ll walk you downstairs later,” he offered.
“Thanks. By the way, I’ll have you know that I’ll always take your side when it comes to your relationship with Sally. All the best, Ross,” she said.
He pursed his lips and smiled in response. “Thanks,” he later said with a nod.
It was already two o’clock in the afternoon when she arrived at the lobby of the Charles’ Group building.
She was hesitant to go in at first even though she’d interned here before. She was sure that there’d be a lot of people who could still recognise her.
So… how could she enter the building without getting recognised?
While she paced back and forth on the edge of the lawn, she started thinking up of a plan.
It was the weekend so she knew that most of his employees wouldn’t be at work, but surely there’d be someone at the front desk.
However, she couldn’t possibly tell them that she was here to see Henson.
On the other hand, if she requested for Henson to come down to the lobby, he’d definitely refuse too as he’d want to mess with her.
After loitering at the entrance for about 10 minutes, she suddenly heard someone call her name from a distance behind her.
She turned around to see Jimmy and two men she’d never seen before getting out of a cab together.
He immediately ran over to her and started saying excitedly, “Is it really you?”
“Long time no see, Jimmy,” she greeted.
“Long time no see indeed. Ever since you left, I kept pestering Joye about your whereabouts, but she wouldn’t tell me. And when I called, I kept receiving a busy tone. Did you actually think of cutting everyone off after you left the company? Or did you actually block all of our numbers?” he joked.
She actually blocked his number because he couldn’t stop calling her after she left. She never picked up any of his calls, naturally.
She gave him an awkward laugh in response. It was just her luck to run into Jimmy here of all places today.
“My boyfriend kept pestering me about who you were since you kept calling me back then, and when I told him you were a male colleague, he got jealous and blocked your number. So, I hope you don’t mind, Jimmy,” she explained nervously.
“Your boyfriend’s way too possessive of you. I can’t believe he won’t even let you make friends,” he chuckled nonchalantly.
“I, for one, think it’s actually a good thing since everyone respects one another this way. Wait, I thought it’s the weekend now, so how come you’re at the company?” she asked.
“We’ve been working overtime for almost two weeks now as we’ve been busy organising tutorial programmes for our latest products. Wait, why are YOU here?” he asked back.
“Uh… I’m here to meet Joye,” she said
and gave a nervous giggle. “I’m just deliberating on whether I should head upstairs or not. I don’t want to disturb her or anything,”
“Nah, you won’t. Come on, let’s go,” he said and started ushering her upstairs.
This was truly… an awkward encounter.
When they arrived at the Employee Training Department, she knocked on the door to Joye’s office.
“Come in,” a voice sounded from inside.
She swung open the door to see a surprised Joye. “What are you doing here at this hour, Wendy?” she asked.
“Master Henson had me deliver his lunch to him, but I bumped into Jimmy downstairs, so I told him that I was here to find you,” she giggled nervously.
“Huh, so that’s why. Come on, I’ll cover you as you head upstairs,” Joye said.
She then led her out of her office and into an elevator nearby. “Thanks to you, all the rats in the Training department have all left. Now, the department’s doing better than ever,” she said.
“I heard the manager left not too long ago too” Wendy said.
“Yep, but he looked really miserable before he left. He was later investigated by a procurator and almost landed himself in prison. Apparently, he filed for bankruptcy after bailing himself out of jail. If not for Master Henson’s generosity and tolerance towards the man, I doubt if he could even get out of jail even after filing for bankruptcy,” Joye scoffed.
Wendy could only listen to whatever she was saying in silence and didn’t add anything to the conversation.
After they’ve arrived at Henson’s floor, Joye went down by herself afterwards.
Wendy heaved a sigh of relief. It was the first time she felt it was such a pain to get lunch for someone.
When she arrived at the entrance of his office, Dayne noticed her and immediately got up from his seat. “Thank God you’re finally here, Miss Evans. Master Henson has been asking me whether you’ve arrived four times now in the past fifteen minutes, so you’d better head inside quickly,” he said.
She assumed he must be starving by now. Oh, how she couldn’t wait to see the look on his face later.
