Chapter 185 He Can No Longer Take It

Book:Mr. Charles's Hidden Wife Published:2024-5-1

Wendy suddenly felt a wave of relief wash over her. It was a good thing that she had dinner with Ross at his parent’s place, if not, she’d be the one who’d gotten beaten up instead once Sally found out.
But… in light of current events, what was the real reason she’d called her?
“I feel terrible. I was the one who stood by his side when life was tough for him, and now I’m the one who has to be replaced after his career took off. To be honest, I already had an inkling that all men were like this, but I still feel depressed because now I realised that I’d poured out all my heart and soul to him for nothing. I really hate that this is happening to me, Wendy,” Sally ranted.
“Well, why’d you call me then? Do you expect me to do something for you about it?” Wendy probed.
“I just want you to help me ask him why’s he doing this to me, what I did to deserve this, why he keeps looking at other women and the reason he choose me all those years back if I was really as horrible as he thinks I am now,”
“This whole fiasco should be resolved between the two of you, Sister Sally. I shouldn’t get involved in this in the first place,” Wendy replied frustratedly as she rubbed the space between her eyebrows.
“Admit it, you don’t like me either, right Miss Evans? I bet you thought I deserved it when I told you that Ross broke up with me. It’s probably because I kept being suspicious of you last week,” Sally shot.
“I don’t give a sh*t whether you suspect me or not. I just feel that your relationship to Big Bro Ross should be so close up to the point where you guys could easily talk this out in private. It’d be much better if you did so than ask me, an outsider to meddle in your business anyways,” Wendy retorted.
“I get it now. You don’t want to help me at all, don’t you?” Sally accused and released a long sigh. Don’t tell me, you like Ross too, Wendy?”
Wendy frowned immediately after hearing that. What was this woman on about? “I have a boyfriend,” she snapped.
“Just because you have a boyfriend doesn’t mean you can’t like someone else. You know how common it is for people to cheat on their partners these days,” Sally accused.
“Sally,” Wendy said firmly, her voice much colder now. She’d even changed the way she addressed her now. “The only reason I put up with you was because Ross loved you before. I respected him, which was also why I respected you, but if you can’t even find it in you to respect yourself, then don’t blame me if I start losing my respect for you,” she snapped.
“Then can’t you just help me? I just don’t want things to end like this. Why should I suffer when I was the one who stood by him during his hardest times? Why’s he the one who gets to frolic around with other women?” Sally whined.
Wendy suddenly felt like she finally witnessed everything the world had to offer at that point. “I’ve no right to meddle in your business, so all I can say is that Ross has always been a very kind man. Don’t you think it’s time you should ask yourself why and how he came to the firm decision of breaking up with you in the first place? Ask yourself, what else have you done for him apart from staying by his side during his toughest times?
“One more thing, please remember that we’re not on the best terms, and if it weren’t for Ross, I wouldn’t even know who you are. Just know that I’ll always take his side and not yours whenever the two of you quarrel. I’m sorry but I can’t help you with this. Go find someone else,”
With that, Wendy hung up.
She wasn’t scared of offending anyone, but still tried to avoid doing so as best as she could,
but Sally was the sole exception. She was just too despicable for her own good. This made her wonder how Ross managed to tolerate her all those years.
While thinking about Sally, her mind wandered to Henson.
She pouted and thought, “Henson’s a kind angel, indeed. I hope he stays kind forever, and doesn’t warp into another Sally, or else that’d be horrifying,”
After sitting in silence for a while, she decided to phone Ross up.
“Hey, Ross. It’s me,” she greeted.
“I know it’s you, Wendy. Aren’t you busy now?” he asked.
Upon remembering that it was a weekend and that he’d be busy, she hurriedly replied, “I’m not, but aren’t YOU supposed to be super busy during the weekends? If you are then I can call you back later,”
“It’s alright, I’ve finished my work for now, so I’m pretty free right now,” he said.
“Oh, alright then… I just wanted to let you know that Sister Sally called me just now, Ross,” she started.
He immediately furrowed his brows at that. “Let me guess, she spouted a load of cr*p at you again, didn’t she? Just ignore her, the woman’s incorrigible at this point,” he said.
“I didn’t take any of that to heart, by the way. I’m just calling to ask YOU if you were doing alright?” she asked, concerned.
He gave a long pause before suggesting, “Are you free later in the afternoon? What say you swing by the mall later? We can talk over lunch, my treat,”
“Sure,” she replied and
hung up. She went downstairs afterwards to inform Donald the butler that she was heading out to have lunch with a friend.
Henson would find out on his own where she went eventually anyways, so she rather not lie to him.
After all, it was impossible to fool the man.
Upon arriving at the mall at 11 AM sharp, she sent Ross a text, to which he quickly replied he’d be with her shortly.
The two of them then met up at a Food Court in the mall and decided to have hotpot for lunch,
of which they decided to eat first before delving into any serious topics in order not to ruin each other’s appetites.
Once they’d finished their food, she looked at him and asked, “So, you really broke up with her,”
“Yep,” he replied curtly.
“No chance of getting back together at all?” she probed.
“Did she ask you to plead her case for her?” he retorted.
“That’s right, but I didn’t give her an answer yet actually,” she laughed.
“I take it she didn’t regard you as her enemy then?” he pressed.
“You really do know her well,” she said.
“She’d always used such tactics in the past two years. She was also the reason why I insisted on transferring here from my post abroad. I couldn’t even approach any women before this, because if she found out, she’d always find a way to spin a narrative of them having something to do with me, regardless if they’re single or married, and use that as ammo to humiliate them.
“Also, even if I DID wrong her, I don’t feel bad, because I know she was the one who went too far. Initially, I could still let it slide, and reasoned with myself that she’s only being this way out of her love towards me, but I slowly started to realise that I could no longer keep telling myself that. After all, it wasn’t just one woman whom she humiliated in front of me,” he ranted.
It was obvious that Ross had a lot to say about her as well. Anyone could see that he’d already been holding all of his complaints towards her for a long time coming.
“Just take today for example. She not only beat up my subordinate in the middle of a busy shopping mall, she even humiliated the poor girl in front of everyone, saying that she was akin to a prostitute to have the nerve to seduce someone else’s boyfriend, and that she should kill herself.
“The young lady was just 20 years old and was an intern in the shopping mall, and yet she got her *ss beat and was scolded silly for no reason. She even went up to my office afterwards to tell me she wanted to quit, saying that she didn’t want her reputation to be ruined by someone she didn’t know. I don’t think you can even fathom how I felt at the time,” he said frustratedly.
“I’m pretty sure I can,” Wendy giggled.
“I’m really sorry about what happened last time. My parents don’t like her either, but I feel that the only reason they tolerated her was because of me. To be honest, I’ve also been fed up with her for a long time now, so I won’t back down no matter how hard she tries to win me back this time round.
“Sure, I gave her my heart before, but she really took it, tortured it and stomped it into dust. It’s not like I’ve ever done anything incriminating either, so I feel it’s time people stop seeing me as one,” he said.
She then took a sip of tea and thought of the saying, ‘it’s easier to destroy ten churches than to destroy a marriage’.
However, she felt like he’d actually made the right choice this time round.
