Chapter 167 A Kind of Scent that Attracts All the Boys to Your Yard

Book:Mr. Charles's Hidden Wife Published:2024-5-1

Wendy didn’t know what to reply so she just rolled her eyes at him. “Can’t you be serious for once, Henson,” she huffed.
“It’s strange, you know. I never feel like acting serious when I’m with you. One look at you and my devious side comes out. Didn’t I tell you before? You just got a kind of scent on you that attracts all the boys to your yard,” he teased.
She, on the other hand, was already done with his sh*t. She pulled up the covers and flung it towards him. “Shut it. Go to sleep,” she shushed him.
He saw how bashful yet anxious she looked before lying down, so he called out her name, “Wendy,”
She glared at him. “What now?” She asked.
“Let’s fall asleep together,” he suggested.
“I still have some work to do,” she replied grumpily.
He snatched the book out of her hands and placed it on a nightstand after hearing that. Then, he grabbed her by the wrist to pull her into his embrace with some force.
“I just noticed that you’re not as sharp as I thought you were. What’s the use of studying so much when you could just depend on me fully? Don’t you think I’m more helpful than your job could ever be?” He asked.
“Work makes me happy,” she said while trying to wriggle free from his grip,
but he was just too strong. It felt like she was being trapped between steel bars with the way he held her in his arms.
“You looked way happier in my embrace two nights ago, by the way,” he remarked.
She lifted her head and quickly covered his mouth with one hand. “Just stop talking and go to sleep now,” she ordered.
He smirked as he loosened his arm around her, allowing the both of them to feel more comfortable.
But as he was still holding on to her, she wasn’t able to escape from his grasp.
As she laid her head on his chest and listened to the thumping of his heart through his chest, she drifted off to sleep not long after.
When they woke up, the two of them had already changed their sleeping positions.
He was now reclining flat on his back, with one arm under her neck, while she’d turned to his side and was half-hugging him.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she immediately let go of him and left his embrace.
But just as she was about to get up, he kissed her on the forehead and greeted her, “Good morning,”
She then sat up and tried to comb her messy hair with her fingers. “Good morning,” she muttered in reply while
he got out of bed and started doing some stretching exercises.
“Did I hurt your arm?” She asked after seeing him move like that.
“You didn’t hurt it so much so as made it numb,” he grinned. “No wonder people keep saying you’re smart. Your head … can be pretty heavy.”
He then rubbed her head and requested, “Come here, help me pinch this area to make it up to me.”
She sat up on the bed and stretched out an arm to place it on his shoulder.
He couldn’t believe his eyes. This little girl in front of him was strangely obedient today.
She used up all of her strength to slap him on the shoulder instead. “That’s what you get for sleeping here instead of sleeping in your own room.”
She huffed and rolled her eyes at him. The man was just asking for it at that point.
With that, she got out of bed and stormed into the bathroom to wash up.
After the door had shut behind her. he raised an eyebrow and thought to himself, “Ah, my wife’s still adorable even though she’s definitely a different breed.”
When she arrived on campus in the morning, she noticed a few students pointing at her on her way to the office.
Rumours always travelled the fastest, but she already knew exactly what to expect.
She merely ignored them and continued walking with her head held high.
Why should she feel guilty knowing that she did nothing wrong?
Upon entering the office, Carmen started gossiping again. “Oh, you’re here, Miss Evans. Were you selected as a student representative yesterday when you went to the president’s office?” She asked.
Wendy shook her head and smiled. “How’s that even possible? How can I be chosen as a student representative when I’ve already graduated?” She asked back.
Cael, who was standing in a corner suddenly piped up, “Be honest with us, Miss Evans. Literally everyone knows by now since it’s such a huge thing on campus. So, you should stop hiding things from us, especially when we’re your colleagues,” he said.
Although she didn’t feel that it was necessary for her to explain, since they were sharing an office, she didn’t want there to be any awkward tension between them. “I really didn’t receive any notice about this,” she lied.
“Oh, really? Then why’d the president call you to his office?” Carmen quizzed.
“It’s because the kids in our class had chosen a male student to represent the student body, and President Burke had asked me to persuade him,” she lied again.
“Are you talking about Howell?” Carmen asked, suddenly realising something.
“Yep,” Wendy replied quickly.
Cael looked at her with narrowed eyes. “Then, how’d the rumour spread on campus in the first place? I must say, Miss Evans, you have terrible luck. It’s horrible that you keep getting attacked like that left and right,” he lamented.
“I don’t know why myself,” Wendy scoffed.
“I suppose that’s what happens when you get too popular. I just fear that if the female student representative isn’t chosen soon, then you’ll continue to be under everyone’s scrutiny. What people are saying to you now is already horrible enough,” Carmen commented.
“What people say might be scary, but rumours can easily be stopped by the wise. They’re just exercising their right to freedom of speech, so I’ll just let them say whatever they want to say, and discuss whatever they like to discuss. I just plan to let them be,” Wendy replied with a shrug.
“You may look young but you’re surprisingly pretty open-minded,” Carmen said.
“I just feel like no one should get depressed over such a minor setback,” Wendy said as she picked up a file from her desk and got up. “I’ll be heading to the administration office now. You guys should get back to work too.”
After she left, Carmen looked over to Cael and said, “What kind of tone was that? Were you trying to push her into a corner or something?”
“What’s up with my tone?” Cael asked and raised an eyebrow. “Can’t I even ask about what y’all are talking about now?”
“But the way you spoke was awful just now,” Carmen shot.
“Oh, come on, Carmen. Don’t forget you were the one who couldn’t stop gossiping about her before this. Did you honestly forget just because you received her scarf as a gift yesterday?” He scoffed.
“What are you trying to say?” She was clearly annoyed.
Cael grunted and got up from his seat. “You know exactly what I mean,” he said and stepped out of the office.
After he slammed the door shut, she muttered under her breath, “Look who’s talking, He’s clearly the one who’s jealous. What a psycho.”
At around noon, the university finally finalised the list of staff and students who were involved in the making of the promotional pamphlets.
Wendy’s name didn’t appear in the announcement sheet as it had been replaced by the name of a beauty from the newly set up Advanced Finance Department.
Every rumour of her that had surfaced last night immediately died out after that.
Some rumours really went as fast as they came.
The moment she saw the list of people who were chosen for the pamphlet, she sent Henson a text. “What an able capitalist you are with such a strong work ethic. Thanks a lot.”
He phoned her up shortly after.
The moment she picked up the call, he said, “What’s it going to be? A meal on you?”
“You got your gift last night, so no more treating you to a meal,” she huffed.
“I just noticed that your purse is much more important to me than your chastity,” he teased.
“No sh*t,” she thought. Money was everything to her.
She decided that she’d rather live the rest of her life unwed than to live without money.
“Anyways, what did you tell the president?” She probed.
“I told him that my woman was off-limits to the public eye, and I also warned him to stop thinking about you,” he said.
She pouted. “Stop messing around with me. What exactly did you tell him?” She asked.
“Are you sure I’m teasing you right now?” He asked back.
“You know that I don’t like it when people throw blind guesses at our relationship. So, it’s obvious that you didn’t say that,” she replied.
He raised an eyebrow and said, “So, it appears that you still have a bit of conscience left in you to know how well I usually treat you, and how I always think about you.”
She paused for a moment. Of course she knew that. After all, there weren’t that many people in the world who genuinely treated her as well as he did, which was why she was thankful to have him around.
No matter the time and place, she’d decided that she was willing to die for this man.
However, some words of gratitude were better left unsaid.
“Anyways, what exactly did you tell him?” She asked again.
