Wendy frowned. “Stop messing around. I told you, the reason I liked him at the time was because I didn’t get to see him often, so naturally I remembered him well,” she said.
“You’re not to use the word ‘like’ again,” he commanded, his gaze chilly and full of jealousy. “Continue.”
She felt annoyed. Wasn’t he the one who told her to tell the story?
Did he want her to leave out half of the story now?
Why should she lie about liking Ross then?
“I met him twice that year, the first time was during the new year. He came over to deliver us a few things on his parent’s behalf. That was when Uncle and Auntie used to lend us their help a lot financially. The second time was when he came over for a meal after taking the SATs, and that was when he told me his plans of studying abroad. I hadn’t seen him since then. It’d been over a decade since we last met.” She said.
“It appears that you think this farewell of ten plus years is something worthy of being sad about,” he scoffed.
She rolled her eyes at him and snapped, “Can’t you be a bit nicer when you speak?”
“Then, how did you two contact one another after that?” He asked out of frustration.
“We hadn’t contacted each other since,” she admitted.
“You’re lying. If you hadn’t contacted each other before this, then why’d I catch you two today?” He probed.
“What do you mean ‘catch you two today’? Don’t make it sound so bad. I’d like to think that this is destiny. I might even think that you were the one who made it all happen,” she snickered and continued,
“If you’d told me this morning that I had hickeys on my neck, I would’ve gone home and changed into a turtleneck. And if I’d changed clothes, I wouldn’t have to wear Linda’s scarf in fear of being a laughing stock in the office.
“And if I hadn’t worn Linda’s scarf, Carmen wouldn’t have wanted to try it on. But I didn’t take it off for her in the end and accidentally offended her with my words.
“I then had to fib and tell her that the colour of the scarf didn’t suit her and that I’d bought a scarf recently that didn’t suit ME, but would suit HER. This is why I had to promise to bring her the scarf tomorrow.
“And in order to fulfill my promise and perfect the lie, I had no choice but to buy a scarf after work. Coincidentally, after buying the scarf, while I was waiting… Ah, drats!” She suddenly exclaimed and slapped her forehead as if she’d just remembered something important.
slapped her forehead as if she’d just remembered something important.
“What is it?” He asked with a frown.
“It’s all your fault. Since you urged me to come down just now, I’d totally forgotten to pick up the fruit juice I ordered,” she said in frustration.
“Why are we talking about juice again?” He asked, dumbfounded.
“I felt a bit thirsty after I bought the scarf, so I’d queued up to buy myself some juice. It was only after I paid up, and was waiting to pick it up when I bumped into Ross,” she explained.
He looked like he didn’t believe her. “So, you met him by chance?” He quizzed.
“Yep. That’s why I said that you were the one who made it all happen today,” she giggled.
He was secretly displeased after hearing this. “So, you guys exchanged numbers just now?” He asked.
“Of course,” she said and grinned through pursed lips.
“Then, give me your phone,” he ordered.
She moved her handbag to the other side and accused, “What do you want to do? Do you intend to delete his number?”
“I want to see how you saved his name as a contact on your phone,” he said.
“There’s no need to look, then. I saved his contact as My Ross,” she replied calmly.
His anger flared again. So, ‘Crazy Rich Brother’, ‘The President’s Idiot Son’ and ‘The Rich Third Master’ was how she named the two despicable men and his own contacts respectively?
While the man she liked was saved as ‘My Ross’?
He looked at her coldly and pressed, “So, you’re telling me that in your eyes, Ross is the only person you like, while you hate me the same way you hate Bain and Gorman?”
“I don’t hate my brother,” she replied flatly.
“What was he thinking? How could she hate her own brother?” She thought to herself.
His expression darkened as he gritted his teeth. “Then, does that mean you only hate me and Gorman?” He accused.
“When did I ever say I hated you?” She asked back while glaring at him.
“Yes, you didn’t say it outright, but your actions speak volumes,” he thought.
“Give me your phone,” he commanded again as he held his palm out to her.
He was pissed, like, really pissed.
It was the first time in his life that he got so angry he wanted to scream at someone because of a woman.
She knew that if she didn’t hand him her phone now, he’d definitely figure out another way to get it, which is why she complied with his orders right away. “I’m not lying, by the way,” she said firmly.
He clicked on her contact list and found the name ‘My Ross’ eventually.
He then edited his name into ‘the neighbour’s son’ before returning the phone back to her.
One look at the edit was enough to make her knit her brows. “Henson Charles! Who gave you the permission to do that?”
“You’re not allowed to change it back, by the way. If I find out you did it in secret, I’ll repeat what happened last night a hundred times over,” he threatened.
With her glare on him, his lips curled into a smug smile. He later got out of the car and into the driver’s seat.
“Come sit with me,” he said while turning his head to the backseat.
She frowned and replied him in a pouty manner, “No,”
“Sure, we can stay here all night. I can accompany you then,” he said.
She surrendered and got into the passenger’s seat eventually.
He then started up the car to drive away from the mall.
While driving, he said, “I hope you don’t mention this ‘Ross’ in front of me ever again from now on. You’re no longer a little girl, if you didn’t notice, so don’t go around calling guys like you’re still ten. It’ll make me feel tingly all over, and that’s in a bad way. Understood?”
She turned to look at him and sneered, “What’s your problem?”
He raised both of his brows and replied, “That’s just how I am,”
She sighed. She felt it was super unlucky of her to get entangled with such an unreasonable man like Henson.
When they arrived at the entrance of the villa, Baron, who’d hailed a cab to return, was already waiting for them at the gates.
Upon seeing the car drive up to the gates, he immediately stepped forward to open the car doors for both Wendy and Henson.
After getting off the car, Henson turned to her, who was about to enter the villa and said, “Oh, yeah. I brought your little sister back. Go get her yourself, she’s in the trunk.”
“What?” She gasped and gave him a puzzled look. “What are you on about?”
“Go take a look yourself.”
He snickered as he pushed open the front doors to enter first.
As she walked over to the trunk of the car,
Baron went ahead and helped her open it.
Sitting in the spacious yet empty trunk was a lonely small bear plush.
Wasn’t this the plush she saw lying on the sofa in her apartment this morning?
At the time, she’d thought it looked awfully familiar, but didn’t give it much thought as she was busy slipping away then.
But upon seeing it again, a peculiar scene flashed across her mind.
She picked it up and stared at it for a moment, then turned to face Baron, whom she thought had drove Henson to the clubhouse last night.
turned to face Baron, whom she thought had drove Henson to the clubhouse last night.
“Baron, was it you who drove me and Master Henson to Big City last night?” She asked.
“That is correct, Miss Evans,” he answered.
“Then, do you know anything about how this bear plush got here?” She pressed.
“Miss Evans, this bear plush belongs to you. You drank too much last night and had begged Master Henson to get it for you,” he replied curtly.
She pointed at herself and asked in disbelief, “I begged him to get it for me?”
“Indeed. The store selling it was closed, but you still insisted on having it. After Master Henson had agreed to give it to you, he phoned his secretary up and told him to track down the owner to open their doors. But you suddenly said that he’d broken his promise and made you wait, and since he didn’t want to disappoint you any further, he took a brick and smashed the shop window just to get you the plush. So, that’s how you got the small bear plush,” he summarised.
She was stunned speechless. Was she out of her mind back then?!
