Chapter 149 What Other People Say Aren’t Important

After returning to the villa, Wendy ran back to her room and plopped herself by the window.
Even when Henson came in to the room, she was still in a daze and didn’t hear his footsteps.
He walked up to her and bent over with the intention of embracing her, but
she quickly jolted to one side as she was startled by his gesture.
After letting her go, he laughed and said, “What are you thinking about? You look like you just saw a ghost.”
“It’s nothing,” she muttered with a bashful grin.
“Baron told me you went to the hospital just now. Is there something the matter?” He asked.
Her heart tightened for a moment before she shook her head. “It’s nothing much, I just went to visit a friend,” she replied.
“A colleague?” He pressed.
She didn’t feel like lying to him, so she admitted, “It’s Gorman,”
“He got admitted to the hospital?”
“Yeah,”
“Is he sick?”
She shook her head gently in reply. “He got into a car accident.”
“Looking at your expression, I’d say it was a serious one,” he deducted.
“I don’t know either. I didn’t enter his room,” she said and looked at him. “Judy caught wind that Gorman had gotten into a car accident and had lost a leg from that, which is why I went.”
“Then why didn’t you enter his room and probe him about it?” He probed.
She lowered her eyes, bit her lip and started tearing up.
He too, felt upset after seeing her like this. “This woman, could it be that she still harboured feelings towards the man?” He thought to himself.
“What seems to be on your mind, Wendy?” He comforted.
He always thought that he had a knack to see through people and their thoughts, but for some reason, he could never see through Wendy.
She looked at him with a heart full of guilt. Often times, she didn’t know who to turn to when she needed to get certain things off her chest, so
she felt that it was perfect timing that Henson had appeared in front of her.
She stretched a hand out to grabbed his sleeve, and she looked like a stray cat that had just found its owner. “It was me,” she started.
“I was the one who got Gorman into this mess in the first place. He came to me and demanded an explanation as to why I never told him that I’m the illegitimate daughter of the Nicholson family that day. I was pissed that he did a background check on me behind my back, so… I said a lot of nasty things to him. He got into a car accident shortly after that.
“Gorman has always been a very touchy person. If I hadn’t embarrassed him so much that day, he probably wouldn’t have gotten into that accident. May was right after all. I’m just that unlucky, and anyone who gets involved with me won’t have a good time in the end,” she said with a shaky voice.
She lowered her eyes as she spoke and tried her best not to let her tears fall.
He frowned. He didn’t think May, an evil woman, would actually go out of her way to hurt people with her venomous words like that.
A tinge of anger surfaced in his gaze as he pulled Wendy into an embrace.
“Gorman’s accident has nothing to do with you. It’s his own fate that he ended like that. You had also spouted nasty words at me before this, but I’m still alive and well.” He said.
She exhaled and hurriedly replied, “But he-”
“No buts… you shouldn’t let this get you down. You can’t possibly shoulder the blame for everything. It’s normal for one to say nasty things when people push their buttons. What isn’t normal, though, is forcing a smile even after they hurt you? Such a thing just doesn’t happen in this world,” he explained.
She still felt uneasy in her heart.
He let go and held her face with his hands. “You don’t have to feel bad just because some person tells you should. What other people say aren’t important. Just answer me this, did you really want him to end up like this?” He asked.
She shook her head with conviction.
He nodded his head in approval. “Good. It’s like the saying goes, ‘so long as people have their own lives and wealth, the word of the ancients are honest and not deceiving’,” he said.
She looked at him, grateful for the fact that she had someone like him to comfort her at a time like this.
He might be seen as a demon to others, but to her, he was her guardian angel. He had to be.
……
The next morning, there came a knock on the door when Wendy was busy working.
Linda was surprised to see the previous president standing outside after opening the door. “Mrs. Taylor,” she greeted nervously.
Upon hearing this, three other people in the office turned their heads to look at Mrs. Taylor, who was standing at the door.
After disappearing for a few days, she appeared somewhat haggard now.
She then looked over to Wendy and said, “Are you free now, Wendy? If you are, let’s have a chat outside,”
Since she’d already made the effort to come see her, Wendy felt that it would be unsightly of her to turn her down, especially in front of her colleagues.
So, she got up and walked towards the door. “Let’s talk downstairs,” she said.
She had a grim expression on.
The two of them then descended the stairs and entered the pavilion that was located in front of the office building.
Mrs. Taylor found a seat and gave a sigh. “I’ve always thought that you’re a kind-hearted girl, Wendy,” she started.
“Just because you say that doesn’t mean I’ll treat you as such now, so stop beating around the bush and tell me why you’re here, Mrs. Taylor,” Wendy hissed.
“Gorman told me before that you’re a Nicholson,” Mrs. Taylor said.
Wendy frowned, and before she could say anything, Mrs. Taylor continued, “I’m sorry for insulting you as an orphan in the past.”
“You don’t have to apologise since I don’t think we’ll have anything to do with each other anymore after this. So, you can cut the apology act,” Wendy sneered.
“Wendy, I know I was too hard on you before, but I really hope that you can put that aside and go to the hospital to pay him a visit. The patient in bed 2 that I told you about yesterday was actually my son. The car accident had crippled him and made him give up on himself. I was hoping that you can advise him to get himself together again.”
Mrs. Taylor pleaded, with a face that showed her old age and the concern of a loving mother.
“I’ll go, but in turn, you can never show your face to me ever again in the future,” Wendy agreed to her request after a moment of silence.
With that, she got up and was about to leave the pavilion when she heard.
Mrs. Taylor sigh. “If you’d told me earlier that you were from the Nicholson family, I wouldn’t have made things so difficult for the both of you. After all, our families are one and the same, and this has always been the rule set by the elders of the Taylor family for generations. Even I feel frustrated as an in law of the Taylors,” she lamented.
“Then, I guess I don’t belong in the Taylor family, Mrs. Taylor. The Taylor way of doing things has always irked me,” Wendy spat in reply.
With that, she got up and left for real.
Mrs. Taylor frowned as she gazed at the proud young lady storming off.
Even at this moment, she couldn’t bring herself to like her. She felt that most girls who acted all high and mighty were probably devoid of love and affection.
Gill was still there when Wendy arrived at the hospital.
However, she wasn’t inside his room, but was waiting at the door.
Seeing as Wendy had arrived, she suddenly became alert and blocked her path. “What makes you think that you can just waltz in here after the mess you put Gorman through? You better get away from me right this instant, the further the better,” she spat coldly.
“Gorman’s own mother told me to come here, so if you have a problem with that, you should direct it to her, not me. I refuse to even talk to you right now,” Wendy sneered.
She circled around Gill, and just as she was about to enter his room, Gill provoked her through gritted teeth, “You’re not satisfied that he lost his leg, so you want to take away my position as mistress in the Taylor family too?”
“Oh? So, the reason you’re here wasn’t for him, but for the position of mistress in the Taylor family?” Wendy probed.
