To put it bluntly, she was nothing but a plaything to Hamish, something disposable and insignificant.
She knew she didn’t deserve to be cherished by Hamish, but she was a living person. Why should he have the power to summon and dismiss her at will?
Elisa finally understood that this was who Hamish truly was, selfish to the point of cruelty, never sparing anything or anyone that could be of use to him.
A hint of guilt flashed in Hamish’s eyes, quickly disappearing, but Elisa caught it.
“Don’t look at me like that, it disgusts me!” she exclaimed.
Hamish remained silent for a moment and then said, “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
Elisa sneered and spoke mockingly, “What guarantee do you have? Should I remind you of how you ended up in conflict with Lukas?”
To put it bluntly, if he hadn’t been so ruthless towards Lukas, would Lukas have retaliated so fiercely?
“You crippled him. What do you think would have happened to me in the past?” Elisa’s eyes reddened with anger.
Given Lukas’s methods, even if she didn’t die, she would have lost half her life. Just thinking about what she had experienced that night sent chills down her spine.
Hamish couldn’t possibly be unaware of what she would have faced in the past, he simply didn’t care about her.
She thought that in her past life, she must have desecrated Hamish’s ancestral grave to deserve such humiliation in this life.
“Hamish, I won’t trade Lila for your death. Lila has framed me multiple times, and if something happens to her, I will send her the biggest wreath,” Elisa said.
Hamish furrowed his brow, and if he had heard Elisa say such words before, he would have slapped her without hesitation.
“As long as you buy me time, I will definitely save you, and once you’re out, I will compensate you properly,” he said.
“Do I need your compensation? Hamish, if something happens to me, if I’m violated by Lukas and his men…” Elisa’s hypothetical scenario was interrupted by Hamish.
“Lukas won’t do that,” he stated.
“He may not, but he has many people under him,” Elisa replied. Just the thought of a woman facing a group of men made her shudder. Only Hamish would earnestly promise her that nothing would happen.
Hamish had a strong possessiveness; he wouldn’t give others the opportunity to touch something he had once possessed, even if he had discarded it.
Hamish struggled internally, and after a moment, he spoke slowly, “Elisa, if it really comes to that point, I will kill them all. I won’t despise you even a bit.”
Elisa grinned uncontrollably, feeling an inexplicable sense of desolation. Just a second ago, she had thought she held some weight in Hamish’s heart, and such self-delusion was shameful.
His words brought her back to reality, and for a moment, she couldn’t find the words to say as she stared at his cold and ruthless demeanor.
“What if I refuse to go?” she finally asked.
“Then I will knock you out and find someone else,” he replied coldly.
Such a heartless person, Elisa murmured, “In this world, if you want something, you have to pay a price for it. Just like when I insisted on marrying you, I lost my pride, my self-respect, and my life, as well as my loved ones.”
“If you want to save Lila, then let me go. I’m willing to go, or else you’ll only send a corpse,” she said.
“Are you asking for a divorce now?” Hamish couldn’t believe it. “I’ve said that no matter what happens to you, I will compensate you.”
“And I’ve said that I don’t need your compensation,” Elisa replied. She had never thought about coming back alive from this journey. With a heart prepared for death, she only wanted to divorce Hamish at the end, so that she could leave cleanly and have the face to meet her family.
The older generation says that when two people get married, there is a red thread tied to them, and the wedding ring on their finger is a message to find someone in the next life.
She had suffered too much with Hamish in this life, and she didn’t want him to find her in the next life.
“Don’t think too highly of yourself. In my eyes, you and Lukas are the same kind of person,” she said. Lukas treated her as a plaything, and wasn’t Hamish the same? He kept her locked up here like a chained animal all night, worse than a plaything. She couldn’t even choose her own fate, but at least outside she could decide her own destiny.
Hamish openedhis mouth but couldn’t utter a word. His mind was a mess, his ears buzzing, unable to find peace. An indescribable emotion burst forth from his heart, causing his heart to constrict in pain, beyond his control.
When he was on the terrace below, he had imagined this scene, but Elisa’s disappointment at the mention of divorce was far more heart-wrenching than he had imagined.
At that moment, he wanted to smoke again.
“Have you made up your mind?” he asked.
Hamish released the chain from his hand, turned away, and sat on the edge of the bed. He took out a cigarette from the pack, his hand trembling as he lit it. He tried several times before successfully lighting it, and he took a puff, exhaling a pale white smoke as he looked at the ground.
Half of his face was shrouded in shadow, and his pitch-black pupils seemed bottomless.
After a while, Hamish’s voice emerged from the smoke, “Fine… I agree… We’ll divorce.”
His voice trembled, and his usually calm face began to crack.
“Now, call the lawyer and prepare the divorce agreement. Tomorrow morning, we’ll go straight to the civil affairs bureau to get the divorce certificate.”
Hamish was taken aback. He still had some lingering hopes, wanting to save Elisa before discussing the divorce, but he didn’t expect her to be in such a hurry.
Elisa noticed his expression and sneered sarcastically, “Hamish, do you think I would believe your nonsense? Besides, tomorrow afternoon I’m going to exchange you for your beloved. Time is of the essence. By divorcing, you can be openly with Lila.”
