“Have you not been sleeping?” Hamish asked hoarsely, the smell of nicotine still lingering on him, faintly emanating as he spoke, not unpleasant.
Elisa inadvertently raised her gaze and noticed the bloodshot eyes of Hamish. His expression, usually cold and indifferent, now seemed troubled, with a gloomy aura between his brows.
“Just about to sleep, but I haven’t fallen asleep yet. I have insomnia and it takes a few hours for me to feel a slight drowsiness. Now I’ve been awakened by Hamish, and I don’t know when I’ll be able to sleep again,” Elisa replied casually.
Elisa asked, “Why did you come back so late today?”
“There was something at the company.”
“Oh.”
The two fell silent, and the atmosphere grew increasingly strange. Normally, Hamish would look at her with either hostility or indifference, but today his eyes carried reluctance, guilt, conflict, and pain, as if he was struggling with something difficult to decide.
“Where did the 5 million from your account go?”
Elisa was taken aback and quickly reacted, “I gave it to Lukas.”
After saying this, Elisa clearly felt a chill in the air around Hamish, which made her inexplicably uneasy.
“The day I went to the underground casino to save Ivan and pay off his debt, I gave him the money I had on me,” she explained.
Hamish played with an iron chain, which emitted a faint rattling sound, sending shivers down one’s spine.
“I’ve seen the agreement Lukas had you sign, and it didn’t require you to repay the money. It only stated that you had to spend a night with him to offset the debt, and you were indeed in his bed at that time.”
Elisa’s face changed, wondering what Hamish wanted to say.
Furthermore, Hamish continued, “Besides, I have already taught him a lesson, so he shouldn’t transfer money from your card anymore. But why did that money end up in his account on the day before our divorce?”
Even a fool could tell that Hamish now harbored suspicions about her, but she hadn’t done anything, and she couldn’t figure out his train of thought.
Elisa lazily listened, feeling a chill on her body. She pulled the quilt closer to her arm and asked, “So what?”
Hamish’s gaze darkened, and as he looked at Elisa, his gaze turned scrutinizing. “Lila was kidnapped yesterday morning, and the person who kidnapped her is related to Lukas.”
Elisa’s pupils dilated for a moment, and then a surge of darkness swelled within them, deep and unfathomable. Her grip on the quilt tightened.
With each sentence from the man, Elisa fully understood that Hamish was accusing her.
“So you suspect that I hired Lukas’s people to kidnap Lila?”
Hamish replied calmly, “I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t say it, but the way you look at me is filled with malice.” Elisa couldn’t help but sneer, “So, you came back so late to interrogate me and accuse me?”
“The other party demands that you bring 50 million to exchange for Lila. They will send the location tomorrow afternoon.”
Elisa seemed to understand. Who was Lila? She was Hamish’s childhood friend, the person he had grown up with and loved since childhood. That affection was stronger than that for any stray dog on the roadside. In comparison, Elisa was nothing more than an animal. It was only natural for her to exchange her life for Lila’s.
“You want me to exchange Lila? Why? Just because 5 million is missing from my account, you accuse me of orchestrating Lila’s kidnapping?”
“You know who Lukas is, and you witnessed my miserable state that night. Do you really think I would use money to bribe him to kidnap Lila?”
“All in all, you’re just finding an excuse, self-righteously sending me into Lukas’s hands to exchange for Lila!”
