Chapter 57: Aren’t You?

Elisa had the thought of wanting to escape, but where could she escape to when she thought about it carefully? The whole of Bankshire was under Hamish’s control. She was afraid that before she could even get on the car, she would be tied up and sent back. And the price to pay for being sent back later might be unbearable for her.
Besides, she still had a brother. She didn’t care if she died since she only had a little over a year left anyway. She was just worried that others would be implicated because of her.
Hamish knew what she feared the most. As long as he grabbed her weakness, she would be like a kite in his hand. No matter how high or far she flew, with a slight pull, she would be pulled back.
Elisa had something on her mind and could not eat. But her stomach really could not stand it, so she cooked two eggs and took them to the bedroom to eat.
The eggs in her hands went from scalding hot to ice cold, and she waited from daytime until late night when she finally heard the sound of a car downstairs.
A ray of light gradually lit up the dark night. Elisa sat on the edge of the bed, her eyes shifting from the window to the pile of broken glass on the floor.
She realized it and got up to carefully sweep the glass shards on the floor into the trash can.
As soon as Hamish walked in, he saw Elisa squatting on the floor throwing a piece of glass into the trash can. His pupils contracted, and the suppressed anger from the trip erupted uncontrollably, not because of anything else, but because Elisa had smashed their wedding photo.
“Tell me what you did to Lila today?”
Elisa felt a little regretful. She had guessed that Lila would not die easily, but did not expect her to recover so quickly.
Look, as soon as Lila was fine, this man came running to question her. Elisa thought, after the questioning would be the “punishment.”
She had once tied Hamish to her side with a marriage contract. Now the tables had turned, and that marriage certificate had become the last lock imprisoning her.
“Didn’t Lila already tell you at the hospital? Do I need to repeat it?”
“So you admit it.” Hamish’s expression was cold, as cold as the pitch dark night outside.
Elisa felt the weather turn cold again, so cold that her mind was a little chaotic, and she was very sluggish in doing anything. She watched Hamish approach her step by step, and murmured, “Does it matter if I admit it or not? You never believed me, just like when you first came in, you didn’t ask me what Lila said to me first.”
“Lila just got out of the ER. She took sleeping pills to commit suicide because of you.”
“It’s a pity she didn’t die.” Elisa accidentally blurted out what was on her mind.
The word “death” was undoubtedly the most vicious curse for someone who had just attempted suicide and gotten out of the ER.
Hamish’s expression changed in an instant, becoming fierce. The veins on his forehead bulged as he raised his hand and slapped Elisa directly.
Elisa rolled off the bed and pressed her palm down on a piece of glass shard. It hurt, and the hurt went straight to her heart.
The sharp glass shard stabbed directly into her palm. That was the most painful part of the human body’s sensory capabilities. The ten fingers are connected to the heart. Elisa lowered her head and looked at her bloody right hand in the dim light.
A few drops of blood fell to the ground. It was not the blood from her hand. Elisa raised her clean left hand and wiped her mouth and nose, then quickly wiped it clean.
“Did I force her? Did I force her to take the sleeping pills?”
“If it wasn’t for you scolding her, calling her a mistress, a slut, verbally abusing and humiliating her, would she have committed suicide?” Hamish stared at Elisa’s silhouette with narrowed eyes. She had her back to him, hunched over, head lowered, and shoulders trembling, seemingly doing something.
Elisa sniffed and suppressed the blood in her throat. Her voice was weak and mosquito-like. “She scolded me trash, said I deserved it, that my father should die.”
“Aren’t you?” Before Elisa could finish speaking, Hamish had interrupted her mockingly.
Elisa’s body stiffened, and her mind lingered on that one sentence.
Aren’t you?
Elisa’s eyes moistened. When she came to her senses, Hamish was already standing in front of her. She looked at the shiny leather shoes in front of her, along those long legs, and up at Hamish’s cold face.
“Which part of what she said was wrong? Elisa, didn’t your dad scold you enough?”
