Today is the Day. The ceremony is going to be held in the special purpose hall next to the pack house. It has been quite tasty to prepare but I hired the best event planners in the City. I only came here yesterday to check up on the space and if there was anything they needed, otherwise my beta has taken good care of the rest.
You might wonder how Arya reacted when I told her about it. She got emotional of course, but it was too late for her to do anything about it.
I have sent her the dress and other accessories to her home. I am only hoping she accepts to wear them because chances are high she might just decide against my wish, just because she can. I am sure she is goo punish me one way or the other for planning this behind her back.
Oh, Arya, my sweet angry bird. What am I going to do with you?
Looking at myself in the mirror, I make sure my tie is in place. I throw on the jacket and then I am satisfied with what I see in my reflection.
I am not so excited about the party. I am just looking forward to the after-party. When I finally get to have my mate all to myself. I grin at my reflection. I can see my wolf through. He seems to be satisfied too, like the cat that ate the canary. Anything good for our mate is good enough for him.
This is going to be good, I promise him.
I last talked to Arya in the morning. I have been having the urge to call her again but I want to give her space so that she can prepare herself in peace. She told me that she and Penelope have a whole day planned out for girls only. I feel like Arya is lucky to have such a friend who wishes her so much happiness. I feel l am owed to her.
I run my hands through my hair to put the unruly strands in place, and my phone rings.
Who could it be right now? I don’t expect anyone to bother me for the whole of tonight.
It could be Arya.
I pick it up. It is an unsaved number. Disappointed and annoyed at the same time, I disconnect the call. I almost switch off the phone but I don’t, hoping that she might call.
I pick out a watch from the drawer at put it on my wrist. I have never felt so enthusiastic about dressing up. It feels strange but I want to look good today, though, I am sure I always look good regardless.
The phone rings again. The same number.
Fucking shit?
It might be serious. I pick it.
“Hello?”
“Alpha,” the voice is so familiar sends chills down my spine. There is a grave silence that follows after recognizing who it is.
“Congratulations up tonight,” Donovan says, but the sarcasm cuts through.
“What do you want, Donovan? I don’t have time for you.
“I am sure you don’t. You should be pretty occupied. I just wanted to check on you. Did you give my issue a thought just like you promised?” his voice is taunting. My firsts ball up in fury.
“That silence says it clearly that you haven’t. I knew you were too hesitant to carry out my plan, so I didn’t just sit back to await your disappointment,” he says.
“What do you mean?” I am trying hard not to snap. I should keep it under control. I don’t want anything ruining my mood.
“Don’t play dumb with me, Alpha. I am not hesitant like you. I have got nothing to lose. The Blue Blood pack is too weak to harm my clan. We have decided to do it ourselves, and tonight is going to be the perfect timing,” my hands start to shake. No, it can’t be.
“Then why did you risk informing me?” my voice is surprisingly still firm.
“Because I like you and I don’t want you to be completely devastated after all this. So I might spare your mate. Maybe it is not too late to save her.”
I can’t contain the fury in me anymore. I grip the phone so right, hair starts to form on my knuckles and claws from my fingernails. I am on the verge of shifting. My wolf can’t stay in anymore after hearing such shit about his mate.
“Where are you, Donovan? I promise if you do anything stupid I am going to destroy you and your entire clan!” I growl.
He lets out an irritating mocking laugh.
“What are you going to do about that, alpha? Maybe you could have at least saved the family if you had agreed to comply earlier but I think it is too late for that now. Eliminating the family is the best way to start this plan, and you have created such a good opportunity for me by putting on this ceremony. Now the whole family is together. Eric is too nice, you know. He let rogue spies into his pack and now they are the ones on the wheels of the cars they are in. Don’t you think such an alpha should be eliminated?”
“Don’t you touch my mate or any of her family!” I growl, my voice turning animal.
“It might be too late for that, dear knight. Just keep in mind that you are the one to blame for whatever happens to your mate, but as I promised, I will try to make sure your mate survives,” he ends with an evil laugh.
The screen cracks and the phone smudges in my hand. I through the pieces on the wall, screaming my lungs out. I glance at the mirror, my skin with fur and I am transforming.
The door burst open, and my beta Jordan and gamma, Kurt dashed in. They stare at me in horror. I glare at the two and remember Donovan’s words. I have never accepted rogues in my pack. What if I am also surrounded by corrupted wolves? I can trust Jordan because he was born when I was understanding and we have grown together but what about Kurt? What about everyone else?
“Alpha, what happened? We heard your growl from outside,” Kurt inquires approaching me. Jordan’s eyes dart from the pieces of the phone on the floor, and me.
“My mate,” I growl, I try to calm my wolf down all in vain.
“Arya? What has happened to her?” Jordan inquires, worry taking over her features.
“She is in danger and everyone else that is coming here from her pack. We have no time to waste. Tell the pack trainer. Gather all the pack warriors now!” I growl my command.
“What? Who is attacking them? Make us understand,” Jordan says.
“The vampires. Donovan and his clam are attacking the Blue moon pack right now, and they are going to do it in cold blood, killing everyone in their way and Arya’s family is their target,” I tell them.
“Now let’s not waste time. Get the pack warriors now. We are going now!”
“Yes, alpha,” Kurt responds firmly and dashes out of the room. Jordan keeps looking at the pieces of the phone on the floor.
“But I don’t understand this. I thought Donovan and you had an understanding?” he moves around the room perturbed.
“Yes, we do, but this is not the Blacktooth Guardians pack we are talking about, Jordan. This is the Blue Moon pack. He has said he is not going to kill Arya but I don’t trust him, at all. He planted spies in the pack and has his plan going as smoothly as it can,” I tell him, my fury bottling up.
“Why would he do that?”
“For the gold. Blue Blood pack has a lot of minerals buried under their territory, much more than gold. I had also wanted them until I got to know that Arya is my mate. He was here two weeks ago to propose that we join hands in this, but I did not.” Jordan glares at me in disbelief.
“I knew it. I knew that mother-fucker was up to no good,” he curses.
Cole, the pack trainer enters the room with Kurt behind him. Everyone is smartly dressed up, it makes my heart ache.
“Alpha,” Cole gives a swift bow and comes to me. “I have been informed of the situation. I have alerted the pack warriors and they have all assembled in the pack house. We await your command, alpha, “that’s the spirit.
“Good. I am going with you and a few of the fighters. Jordan, take the rest with you to Blue Moon territory to help defend the territory. Kurt, you should go to Alpha Kay and ask him to lend us his warriors. Send a messenger to the Red Mountain pack and ask them for their hand. You never know how big of a war the vampires are going to create,” I order.
“Yes, alpha,” and with no question, he gets out of the room. I quickly strip off my clothes and let my wolf run free with a long and loud howl.
I run out of the room, followed by Jordan and Cole, both in their wolves.
Outside, the pack members are standing outside the hall where the ceremony was supposed to be. It is mostly the weak and very old and young pack members. Most of the strong males and females are part of warriors. They all look on in confusion and fear.
I let out a loud howl, making birds in the woofs wake. The pack warriors howl back, running out of the pack house, all in their wolf forms. These are your loyal subjects, my luna.
I catch a glimpse of Kurt jumping into his jeep and dashing off at a terribly high speed. I trust him when it comes to the wheel.
They are willing to fight for you whether it means life or death.
I can imagine, Arya’s terrified eyes, very scared, blood covering her beautiful face. My imagination goes wild, driven by fear of what the vampires are capable of. I want the uncertainty to transform into hope, but I cant afford to lie to myself.
Hang, in there, Arya. I am coming to get you.
I lead them into the woods, with Jordan, and Cole behind me. We spread into the woods as we do in the annual hunting festival, but the time is not for prey; we are hunting vampires.
The sky is bright, illuminated by a round white moon, just like the night I met my mate for the first time.
No, this can not be the end.
