Chapter 23

“Amy, it’s been a long time since your last check-up. Come in this afternoon for an examination.” Doctor Hill’s gentle voice came through the phone.
“I… my head doesn’t hurt, and I’m busy today, so I won’t go for the check-up.” Amy brushed her hand against the back of her head, where there was a scar, a result of a previous fall, and there was still bruising. It hurt the most in the winter, and she went for a check-up every quarter. But the examination fee was no longer something she could easily afford, so she could only rely on luck for now.
“You’d better make time to come for a check-up.” Doctor Hill advised a few more times before hanging up.
Amy turned her head to look outside, and Lucas had already walked to the center of the ruins, looking up at the dilapidated walls.
Why was Lucas interested in this place?
She furrowed her brows, feeling a little anxious. She didn’t have time to mess around with him. She had to go back and solve the decoration matters with her friends. Even if it didn’t work out, she could notify the couple early and introduce them to a good company, maybe even get a referral fee in return.
As for Lucas, damn, what did he bring back?
She widened her eyes, seeing him holding a dirty object in his hand, opening the rear door and throwing it towards her.
“Take it and wash it clean when you get back.”
“What is this?”
Amy was almost overwhelmed by the foul smell emanating from the object. Disgusted, she reluctantly lifted it open.
“Amy, you better follow my orders. Don’t forget our agreement. If you want to have the Green, if you want to live a comfortable life, you better behave and listen to me.”
Lucas lowered his head, his face cold and stern.
Amy dared not to anger, not knowing why he was so moody… He was fine just now, but he changed his attitude after picking up that damn doll…
She pushed the tattered doll aside, knowing that she wouldn’t have time to do her own thing today.
The car sped all the way, taking the side road without slowing down even when turning corners. It was crazy! When they arrived home, Amy got out of the car and almost threw up, feeling like she was going to vomit out all her internal organs.
“Don’t be so delicate. You’re not a lady anymore.”
He glanced at her, and went into the gate on his own.
Amy wiped her lips and glanced at his back. Since picking up that doll, Lucas had become ill-tempered. Could it be that her father really offended Lucas? Did she voluntarily walk into this ordeal?
“It’s so smelly.”
The driver was about to park the car, but as soon as he opened the door, he pinched his nose and ran away.
Amy walked over in silence, grabbed the doll, and went to the backyard garden to wash it.
Lucas was right about one thing, Amy really didn’t consider herself a lady anymore. She had endured hardships over the past few months, even sleeping on the stairs at times. Was she afraid to wash this thing?
The sun was a bit strong. She stuffed the big doll into the water tank and vigorously scrubbed it with a brush.
This little thing was too dirty. She changed more than ten buckets of water before she could see its true color.
After washing the doll, Amy breathed a sigh of relief and wanted to air herself out on the pergola in the garden.
Lucas’s car was gone again. She glanced back, noticing not just one car this time, but also his driver in a Cayenne following behind.
Well, at least it’s quiet now.
Those maids hadn’t been seen since last night. She didn’t ask, unsure if they were brought in by him for temporary cleaning. Amy didn’t like these strangers intruding into her small world. The sun filtered through the grapevine leaves, shining on her face. These grapes were planted by her and her father together. They should bear clusters of grapes next year, right?
Amy’s head suddenly buzzed, pain surging suddenly, and darkness engulfed her vision.
She quickly grabbed onto the pergola, slowly sliding down to sit on the ground. The night her father was buried, she had a headache once. It had been more than five months since then, but the intense pain still felt familiar, like a knife cutting through her tense nerve fibers…
She collapsed on the ground, curling up into a ball, her fingers reaching for her phone, but she had placed her phone on the steps to avoid getting it wet while washing things…
She was too weak to crawl over, like a fish pulled out of the water, dying, still struggling to move her mouth, to breathe deeply, and as a result, even her throat hurt intensely.
Ding ding…
Her phone rang.
