“Boss, you’re amazing!” Gavin smiled as he approached the deck, looking somewhat disgusted at the already dead Scarlett. “So filthy.”
Evelyn glanced at him, then leaned against the railing, saying, “Call the police.”
“What? You want to turn yourself in?” Gavin asked.
Evelyn gave him a disdainful look. “What did I do? Why should I turn myself in?”
“Oh, you’re not…” Gavin hesitated. Under Evelyn’s oppressive gaze, he swallowed his words and changed his question, “Then, what identity are you using to make this call?”
Evelyn pondered for a moment.
“As… an attentive citizen who discovered a significant case?” she replied.
As she spoke, the boat had already docked. Before the police arrived, Evelyn ordered all her people to evacuate.
Under the dim lights, there were only Evelyn and Scarlett’s lifeless body on the entire boat. She felt neither fear nor satisfaction.
Evelyn’s heart felt hollow. She only hated herself for not being strong enough, allowing those people to dare to pin all the conspiracies and schemes on her. That’s why she had to climb to the top, only by overlooking everyone, could she avoid being bullied and protect the ones she loved.
After the police arrived, they immediately restrained Evelyn and began taking statements on the scene.
The forensic doctor also performed a brief autopsy on the spot. “A slash to the major artery, causing excessive bleeding and death. The weapon was a fruit knife found at the scene. Preliminary examination indicates only one person’s fingerprint on it, which appears to be male.”
The officer looked at Evelyn’s statement and nodded, “According to the girl’s statement, the perpetrator is indeed a man. But the suspect jumped into the sea.”
The forensic doctor collected the weapon in a bag. “Alright, we can notify the family to come and identify the body.”
The officer indicated that it had already been done and was about to take Evelyn back…
Suddenly, there was a chaotic sound of footsteps on the deck.
“Mom… Mom!” Mia rushed to Scarlett’s side regardless of the blood on the ground.
Trembling, she lifted the white cloth to see Scarlett’s lifeless face. She recoiled several steps in fear, only then realizing that the woman on the ground was indeed her mother.
“Mom! Who did this? Who killed my mom? Ah…”
Mia grabbed a nearby staff member, shaking him frantically. Suddenly, she caught sight of Evelyn who was in the corner.
“Is it you?” she demanded angrily.
Evelyn seemed as if she hadn’t heard, leaning lightly against the railing, her gaze cold and disdainful.
Enraged, Mia rushed forward to confront Evelyn. She had barely touched her collar before being restrained.
“Don’t stop me! She’s the murderer of my mother. Officer, this woman has been plotting against us with malice aforethought, and she’s had murderous intent from the beginning. You must investigate thoroughly and not let this murderer go free.”
“Ma’am, please calm down,” the staff member reminded loudly.
But Mia couldn’t calm down now. In her frenzy, she even attacked the police officers.
“You’re assaulting an officer!” the staff member shouted angrily, immediately restraining Mia.
“She’s emotionally unstable right now. Take her back to the police station first.” another staff member ordered.
Mia was taken away, her eyes still glaring at Evelyn.
“Wait,” Evelyn suddenly spoke up. “Can I talk to her?”
The staff member looked at her with suspicion. “She’s going crazy because of you. Are you sure…”
“I’m sure,” Evelyn explained. “We’ve been sisters for so many years, I know her temper very well.”
“My sister just had a miscarriage not long ago. If she continues like this, it could easily harm her health. She’ll go crazy.”
Upon hearing the words ‘miscarriage not long ago,’ the staff member softened a bit. “The handcuffs can’t be removed. You have ten minutes. If it doesn’t work, we’ll take her away forcibly.”
“Thank you, officer,” Evelyn nodded. Then, she walked step by step towards Mia.
Mia looked at her slender figure, her pitch-black eyes, her smiling face, and gradually, the blood-red hue in her eyes faded, replaced by a hint of fear.
“What… what do you want, you… you bitch?” Mia stammered.
“What are you afraid of? I’m just worried about your health, no malice intended,” Evelyn said, making sure the staff members could hear her.
In a place where those people couldn’t see, there’s a glint of hatred in her eyes, making Mia’s whole body numb, even trembling.
Seeing Mia quiet down, the staff member moved further away.
Evelyn smirked, lowering her voice, “Scarlett, I killed her. What can you do?”
Mia froze, her eyes widening in shock.
What can you do…
These seemingly light words were like sharp blades, silently piercing through Mia’s entire body.
“You… you bitch, aren’t you afraid of me shouting?” Mia’s voice trembled.
Evelyn looked disdainful. “Shout? Didn’t you shout enough just now?”
“I’m giving you a chance now. Go ahead, shout. I promise, once you shout, you’ll immediately be labeled as mentally ill instead of assaulting an officer. When it comes to psychiatric evaluations, I can arrange as many as I want. Without the protection of The Reid family or The Taylor family, when do you think you’ll be able to leave the psychiatric hospital?”
Mia knew that endless darkness awaited her… She wanted to kill Evelyn, but she was even more frightened by her.
“What do you want?” Mia’s voice was on the verge of breaking down. “Why are you telling me all this?”
“This is payback for what Scarlett made me go through. Is there anything wrong with that? Maybe when I’m in a good mood, I’ll even dig out your kidneys to repay her debts, it’s not impossible…”
“Tell me, should I dig out your left kidney first, or your right?”
“No, please, no…”
Faced with Evelyn’s threats, Mia completely lost her mind. “Ah, you psycho, murderer, murderer… Ah…”
…
Evelyn left the dock. She didn’t drive, instead opting to walk along the waterfront, following the flow of the water.
Today had been too eventful, and she needed to clear her mind.
The gentle breeze and serene surroundings helped her relax.
After walking for some time, Evelyn noticed that a car had been following her all along. Immediately, she became wary, preparing to escape into the nearby alley.
Suddenly, she heard a honk from behind. Henry got out of the car and approached her with a coat in hand.
He appeared to shine in the midst of the surrounding light, like a guiding beacon arriving to collect his wife
“Feeling cold?” Henry approached, draping the coat over Evelyn’s shoulders. There was a hint of concern in his tone.
She smiled, feeling a sweet warmth in her heart. “Have you been following me? If you care about me so much, why didn’t you pick me up earlier?”
Henry looked at her, but remained silent.
“Have you found out everything?” Evelyn asked.
“Don’t you want me to know?”
Did she not want him to know? Evelyn was actually quite conflicted. She hoped there was someone behind her who could understand her, yet she also wished to present herself as pure and clean before Henry.
“Darling, do you think I’m dirty?” she asked.
“Don’t talk nonsense.”
“But I…”
Evelyn’s words had yet to fully leave her lips when Henry gently grasped her hand and whispered, “Whatever you decide, I’ll stand by you, always.”
“Really?” Evelyn’s voice choked with emotion, her eyes welling up with tears.
In her prevous life, she had been truly blind, to have treated this man like garbage.
Without hesitation, Evelyn threw herself into his embrace. Henry felt her emotions and leaned down, holding her tightly, enveloping her in his love and support.
