Chapter 7

Book:My Alpha My Enemy Published:2024-5-1

I woke up the following morning feeling refreshed. Leaving the hospital early last night wasn’t what I’d wanted for a first day but when Craig wanted to drop me off, I couldn’t refuse.

I quickly washed up and dressed up in a yellow corset top with a black skinny jeans. I hurriedly started putting my keys and pens and a couple of patient files into my bag when my phone started ringing. I picked it from the bed to see and incoming video call from Millie.

Swiping my hair backwards, I picked it, Millie’s baby face coming into full display on my phone’s screen. I could see the bright morning sky behind her, making me wonder why she decided to video call me outside her house.

“Hey Lexy!” She sang festively.

“Hey, Millie. What’s up?”

“Guess where I am!”

“Somewhere not your bedroom?” I asked jokingly.

She turns the camera around so I’d see her surrounding. I was staring at a large airport. I looked closely but couldn’t recognize the place.

“Where the hell are you, Millie?”

“Los Angeles baby!” She screamed “with Tony!”

I saw her boyfriend, Tony step into the camera and waved at me.

“What? You two are here in los Angeles?!”

“Yes! We decided to have our vacation here before going home!”

I smiled widely “that’s really great, Millie. . . . . . Do I need to come pick you guys up?”

“No, do not worry! Tony already rented out an apartment so we’re just gonna take a cab and go there! Okay, talk later, bye!”

She disconnects the call, the blankness of my phone’s screen coming into view again. Shaking my head, I yanked the phone into my bag and grabbed my car keys. I hurried puts and shut the door lock before walking over to my car.

I hadn’t noticed Adam was walking towards me until he called “hey, Lexy”

I turned around to see him crossing the street to me. I smiled brightly, brushing my falling hair to the back.

“Hey, Adam”

He looks from the me to the car behind me and said “I see you own this car now”

“Yeah, my Dad asked me to use it”

“It’s cool. Where are you off to?”

“I. . . . . . . started working as an intern at my dad’s hospital,” I replied “yesterday”

He smiles and replied “that’s really great. I should totally come get a shot soon”

I laughed at his joke and replied “you’re welcome anytime, Adam”

“Alright, you better go so you don’t go late”

I nodded and opened the car “see you later then”

“Wait, are you busy this Saturday?”

“I think so. I. . . . . . .”

“Sunday then?”

I looked at his eyes, saw the desperation to say something in them and replied “okay. . . . yeah. . . . . I don’t think I’d be busy on Sunday”

“Can we grab dinner together? Would be nice to get to know each other don’t you think?”

“Yeah, that’ll be nice.”

“Alright,” he pulls back the car’s door for me to enter. I sat down and he shut it after me, waving a hand at me as I drove out of the place.

I drove up to the hospital and saw that I was early or something. The hospital staffs weren’t so many. I proceeded towards the other hall were my office was and saw Helen and Elena at the desk.

“Good morning guys” I greeted.

“Morning, my dear,” Helen replied “aren’t you looking lovely this morning”

I gave her a smile before saying “thank you, Helen. Have you seen my dad yet?”

“He left surgery a while ago. I think he drove out of the hospital or something”

“Really? Okay. Would he be back soon?”

“Sure. He probably went out to get something”

“Okay, I’ll be off now”

I walked into my office, almost bumping into Craig at the door.

“Hey, Lexy!”

“Hi, sorry I almost bumped into you”

“That’s okay. FYI, we’re having our first surgery with you today so get ready, okay?”

I nodded, looked past him to find Katherina watching me from her seat. She looks away the instant my eyes met hers. I looked back at Craig and asked “where are you off to?”

“To get breakfast, wanna come?”

I nodded “yeah”

“Cool. Come on”

Craig and I walked up to the stairs to the hospital’s cafeteria where we both ordered breakfast. Over the short conversation I had with Craig about what happened in this hospital, I realized Craig was a very chatty person and it didn’t really bother me, at least he was more welcoming than the other guy in our office room. And definitely more friendly than Katherina.

“So which university did you finish from?” He asked.

“Oh I. . . . . . . graduated from Cambridge medical school. What about you?”

“Graduated from NYU. Interned in the school’s hospital and started working here two years ago”

“That’s really nice. What’s your major?”

“Same as you. Cardiology”

I nodded, taking a sip of my canned milk.

“Craig!”

We both turned out heads towards the call of his name. I saw an angry looking slim girl standing at the door, dressed in a black LBD dress, her blond hair cascading down her chest.

Craig gasps like he’s seen a ghost and jumps off his seat and bent down under the table.

“I can see you Craig!” She screams again, stomping towards us angrily.

I didn’t know who this girl was but I pretty much knew they knew each other and that the girl was pissed off about something craig did. Why was he hiding like a moron when she already saw him? I wanted to tell him to get up that she has already seen her but I wasn’t able to before she stopped before us, looking over the table to see him.

“Craig!!” She called again, more fire in her voice.

Craig sprang up from beside the table, a poker look on his face like he didn’t just hide from her. “What’s up, Cami?”

“What’s up?!” She screamed, her eyes wide open like they were gonna fall out any time soon “why the hell are you avoiding me, huh?! You didn’t pick my calls and didn’t return any!”

“Sorry, babe. I was in surgery last night”

“I called you in the afternoon, craig! You were in surgery too?!”

Craig looks down, defeated.

The said Cami snaps her head towards me, her glare unchanged as she watched me before turning back to Craig again and screaming “who’s she?! Who is she, Craig?!”

Ohhhhkay. . . .

“Come on, Cami, don’t be ridiculous, she’s my colleague”

“You think I won’t know your colleague if I saw one?!”

I saw the tired look on Craig’s face and wanted to laugh. I so badly wanted to laugh but had to just hold it in for the sake of the moment for Cami.

“We work here together, okay? She started working yesterday!”

“Well why didn’t you pick my calls?! Is this because of that fight? I told you I’m sorry, Craig, why are you still doing this, huh?!”

“And I told you it’s fine, you very well know how work is around here”

“Then I guess your work is more important than I am then”

“I didn’t say that. . . . . . .”

“You know what? It’s fine! Do not talk to me ever again!” She said before hurrying out angrily.

I just sat there, watched Craig sigh tiredly before sitting back down on his seat. He runs a hand through his hair, messing it up with a ruffle.

I restrained myself from chuckling before asking “what was that?”

“That was my girlfriend” he said. I could see the frustration in his face as he said it.

“Love trouble?” I asked.

“Something like that”

“Well why didn’t you pick her calls? I thought you left the hospital early yesterday and even dropped me off?”

“Yeah, I got so tired that I slept with my phone in my lab coat’s pocket. Forgot to bring it out before hanging it up on the rack and didn’t hear it ring”

“Well you look like you’re in some deep trouble”

“I don’t know, Lexy. She’s always so. . . . . . she complains about everything I do!”

“Maybe you aren’t giving her the proper explanations and attention”

“That’s not true”

“When was the last time you took her on a date?”

“Her birthday?. . . . . . last year?”

I couldn’t stop the laugh that came now.

“Stop laughing, Lexy, I feel so bad already”

“I’m sorry…. You need to fix things up with her, Craig. Within all those anger is still a soft spot where you could always touch and get her back. You know what to do. I think I like her already” I laughed, remembering the scene that just happened.

“I’m not apologising to her. She started this anyway”

“So you ignored her on purpose”

“No, that was just a coincidence and I’m so glad it happened. We were supposed to go see a movie last Saturday and she ditched me to meet some guy she called friend! ”

“Wow, that’s serious”

“I know! And now she thinks a simple ‘sorry’ should solve it all and bury it behind us!”

“Well if a simple sorry wouldn’t do it, what would?”

He stares at me for a long while, arms folded before he replied “I don’t know. . . . . . I’m just not letting it go yet”

Suddenly, his pager started beeping. “Oh shit,” he said, standing up “we need to be at the ER now”

He started running out and I followed him into the ER. Apparently there’s been an accident. I ran back to my desk and grabbed my white coat, wore it before going back to the ER.

After a couple of hours, we were able to get the three wounded people treated with the help of the other doctors and nurses.

By the end of the operations, I was exhausted as hell. I walked out of the intensive care unit room to spot my father walking up. I was quick to notice the tiredness in his face, the sluggishness in his pace, the look of exhaustion all over his body. He seems to be thinking deeply about something. I wanted to go to him but stopped as he looked up to see me. I saw a different look in his eyes and couldn’t point out what it was. I just stood there, a large distance between us as our eyes met. I managed to smile at him but he doesn’t return it and just looks away like he didn’t see me.

Instead, he walks over to the desk where two other attendants stood behind and looked through the admitted patient’s chat. I looked down, a feeling of disappointment washing over me. I straightened up again and walked back into the intensive care unit, walking towards the unconscious patient on the bed to check his vitals and pulse.

I slowly looked across me to find my dad checking up on the other patient laid down on the bed. I quietly slipped out without him noticing and walked back to the table where Helen stood. Before I could ask her about what I was going to be doing next, I felt a sharp pain along my head. I shut my eyes, trying to make it go away but it kept getting intensified.

“Lexy?” I heard Helen’s distant voice calling me.

The pain stops at once before I finally pulled my eyes open again to see the worried look on Helen’s face.

“Are you alright?”

Nodding with a smile, I replied “Cramps”

She gave me a smile before saying “okay. What did you wanna talk about?”

“It’s nothing. I’m just gonna go to the bathroom”

She nods before I walked away, towards the bathroom.

I stopped before the mirror, splashed water on my face and stared at my reflection. I couldn’t understand the meaning of these constant head pains I felt these days. Maybe I needed check a check up again. Whatever it was that was up in my head was hurting me real bad and I feared it’s gonna turn into something else soon.
