Chapter 55: Why

Book:Tell me you love me Published:2024-5-28

Olivia fell sick upon reaching the Cooper’s house. She had an ordinary cold at first, but then she kept on having high fever. Owen felt something was not right and he asked the professionals from overseas to return. “The cancerous cells have spread again, the illness was controlled well before…”
Dr. Blake gave Olivia a checkup and he looked worrisome. “The situation doesn’t look good, I’ll suggest her to return to the nursing home this instant, they have the best environment and equipment.” Owen would not find it difficult as long as Olivia could still be treated. He slightly heaved a sigh of relief and immediately ordered, “Let’s go then.”
The Cooper’s house became empty in just one night and Lucas who had just gotten the news punched his hand hard. He was not able to stay by Olivia’s side last time and he must do so no matter how this time. This time, Owen did not stop him. Maybe it was to give Olivia more courage, everyone was cheering for her behind that glass window.
Janet hopped into Lucas’s arms as wished. Owen was both poignant and sad. A true father-and-daughter was indeed different. No matter how many years he stayed by Janet’s side, she would still be closer to that guy who was her father. Maybe every child needs a father.
Owen glanced at Olivia who was in the ward and then at Lucas. Did he really want to let that man get involved in his sister’s life and become Janet’s father? He already had the answer…didn’t he? Owen looked at Janet who was clinging tightly towards Lucas and with a brooding look, he slowly let down his guard. He should give them a chance. He looked at his younger sister who was in the ward with deep eyes and thought, as long as you wake up, I’ll give you a chance.

Olivia did not know how long had she slept. Her body was aching everywhere when she woke up and she had no strength at all. The first person she saw when she opened her eyes was Lucas. Lucas looked like a mess. He looked tiresome, his hair and moustache were disheveled. He did not look like the charming and proud man he used to look like before. There were tears in his eyes when he looked at her.
Olivia thought her eyes had gone wrong, yet she was offered a warm hug afterwards. “You’re alright, Olivia, thank god.” Something was not the same during that moment. Olivia looked at her daughter who was making faces at her behind Lucas and slowly let out a smile.
Lucas stood straight and called the doctor in to check her out. The doctors realized Olivia was slowly recovering and everyone who got the news was relieved. Lucas got down on one knee and held Olivia’s hands tightly. “Olivia, please give me a chance, let’s start all over again.” He was ungrateful back then therefore they had suffered so much in the relationship. He only wanted to stay by her side and made up for his wrongdoings for the rest of his life.
Olivia looked at him silently and her eyebrow slightly twitched. God knows how long had she longed for that, but could she possibly agree? She finally shook her head. “No, Lucas, it’s no longer possible between us, please go.” Lucas’s smile froze at once. Janet yelled in disappointment, “Why, mommy?” They loved each other, so why can’t they be together!
Lucas looked confused too. Olivia turned her head sideways and refused to look at him. Why? Maybe it was because her broken body could no longer withstand his love!
