Chapter 42: Do You Still Love Daddy?

“Ms. Cooper, your flower.” A nurse was holding on to a huge stalk of lily as she came into the ward. She looked at Olivia who was reading a book in bed enviously, “I am not sure which gentleman has sent this in, but he has been sending you lilies for a week straight.”
There was a flash of doubt in Olivia’s eyes, but she still faced the nurse with a smile, “Thank you.”
She was stuck in the hospital since not long ago, and she had not made any friends h ere. Who could be the one who had been sending her flowers?
The figure of a guy flashed in the recesses of her mind, but this idea was hastily dismissed by her. How could that be? He wouldn’t be able to find her here, and besides, it was not like him to do something like this.
He hated her so much, so there was no way he would come to visit her, let alone sending her flowers.
Olivia placed the flower next to the window, and Janet happened to walk in on her. Her eyes lit up at the huge flower, “Is it him who has sent you the flowers again?”
Of course, she was referring to that mysterious gentleman who was sending flowers, but in fact, Janet knew very well that it was her father who was doing this. Although she didn’t know why he didn’t want to show himself, Janet was still very happy at this fact. At least, her father was nearby and watching over them.
She inched towards Olivia and admired her mother’s gentle side-profile. She then asked carefully, “Mummy, do you have any idea who is doing this?”
Olivia scratched her head as she looked a little spoiled, “I don’t know this, in fact. It is probably someone who is very kind.”
Perhaps that person knew of the trials and tribulations she had to face in life, so he had come to provide her some consolation.
“Could it be dad?” Janet asked in a low voice while she blinked at Olivia.
Ever since she began to understand things, she never brought up this term “father”, but now, the other half of her life has been given to her by her father which was not far away. She was holding on to the far-fetched possibility that the three of them could reunite one day.
She longed for a family that was complete.
Olivia’s hand froze in mid-air as she looked at her daughter. Her daughter’s childish and naive face was filled with insecurity, but her eyes told her that she was hungry for something.
She turned her face away with a pained expression, “Impossible.”
There was no way Lucas would lower his prestige and send her flowers.
She looked at her daughter and asked, “Do you want to know about your dad?”
Janet’s eyes glowed, “Are you going to tell me?”
So, in the end, she wasn’t a mother who was fit for her role, was she?
Olivia gradually came to a shocking realization that she had never mentioned about Janet’s father in front of her. For a six-year-old kid, he or she would be curious about his or her father, no less. But she had taken away her child’s right to have a father taking care of her…
Olivia hugged her daughter with a sorry expression, and she struggled to say something with her mouth half-open, but in the end she said nothing.
There was no future for her and Lucas, and she could even say that Lucas must not know of Janet’s existence. That would mean that this child would forever lose her chance to have a father in her life.
“Mummy, do you still love daddy?”
Janet asked.
Love was always a heavy subject, and Olivia immediately wanted to run away from this topic. However, looking at the passionate gaze of her daughter, she couldn’t just avoid the topic entirely.
“I… I still love him.” She looked into her daughter’s eyes and started to reminisce, “I love your dad, but there are still many things love can’t resolve. There were too many problems between us, so we ended separating.”
Olivia caressed her daughter’s child-like face and came up with a white lie after a little contemplation, “If your father learns of you, he would love you very much. So, he would try to take you away from me. Janet, I am really sorry, I am sorry that I can’t give you a complete family. You can only have either a father or a mother but not both.”
This was a very difficult and cruel choice, especially for a child.
Janet sniffed hard while throwing herself into Olivia’s embrace, “Why do things have to turn out like that? I want daddy and mummy be together.”
