Beatrice’s hands were shaking under the table, and Nate knew that, so he grabbed them to calm her down, It was cold like ice, and Beatrice couldn’t process that Celestine didn’t like her.
She is expecting it, yes. But even though she was expecting them to dislike her, she had this little hope that Nate’s parents would treat her nicely. She knew what she did to Nate was not good, but she wanted to change and treat Nate nicely, like how he treated her.
She’s willing to change for the sake of Nate.
“What are you talking about?” Nate asked his mom, so Celestine looked at her son.
“We already knew what happened, Nate, and why this woman married you,” Celestine said. Nate looked at Beatrice to inform her everything would be all right.
“Your sister told us everything, Nate. That this woman marries you to kill you and take revenge for her sister.” Celestine added.
“That was all from the past, and we’ve already moved on,” Nate said. So Celestine laughed as she heard that.
“Moved on? Nate, it’s been just a week, and yet you moved on already?” Celestine asks him, so Nate holds Beatrice’s hand to calm her down.
“Mom, I understand why she has to do that-”
“No, Nate, no.” Celestine cut him off with her somber tone. She is pissed right now, and she didn’t like Beatrice to be his son’s wife.
“You’re not in your right mind to do such a thing, Nate. No one can ever understand her for doing that.” Celestine said and looked at Beatrice.
“Your relationship with her must stop. I didn’t raise you to be that kind of person, Nate.”
“Celestine, don’t interfere with their relationship,” Gastov said, so Celestine looked at him badly. “Your son is already a grown-up man and knows what he’s doing. Nate is not a child anymore.” Gastov added that Celestine rolled her eyes and looked at Nate again.
“This is for you, Nate. It would be best if you thought about our name, your name as part of the Vowell. This is for the future of our bloodline.” Celestine said to her son. Nate suddenly laughed and shook his head because of the unbelievable statement he was heard from his mother.
“What you think is for our reputation’s sake, not my happiness. What kind of parent are you?” Nate asked Beatrice to hold him and looked at him to signal him not to talk to his parents like that.
“Nate, don’t talk to your parents like that,” Beatrice whispered. Nate didn’t listen to her. Instead, Nate stood up and grabbed Beatrice’s hand.
“Are you questioning me for being a parent to you?” Celestine asked Nate, unbelievable, while Gastov was watching them and knowing where this would end.
“Don’t talk to me like that, Nate. I am still your mother.” Celestine said very seriously as she looked at her son.
“Then don’t tell me what to do in my life, Mom. I am not your puppet.” Nate said, which made Celestine more angry to him.
“Is that what that woman taught you? Is that how you would treat me after all I did to you? You would not be in your current position if not because of me, Nate.” Celestine said. She will blame Beatrice because of how Nate treats her now. She can’t accept that Nate will defend that woman to her.
“I am your family, Nate. We are your family. She is nothing but an outsider in your life. See how you treat me now? Is that how she taught you? To disrespect me? This is inconsiderate.”
“Excuse me, ma’am.” Beatrice suddenly joins their conversation as she can no longer express herself. She feels terrible now and, at the same time, weak because she was letting Celestine humiliate her.
“I know that I did something wrong to your son, and I know that what you’re doing now is just protecting him, but please don’t humiliate me because, just like you, I still have feelings,” Beatrice said and swallowed.
“I didn’t teach him anything. I didn’t teach him to disrespect you-”
“Don’t tell me that unrealistic line of yours, who will believe in you? From the first place, you are not real to my son.” Celestine cut Beatrice. Nate took a deep breath and looked at his mom.
“You know what, this is why I didn’t want to come here,” Nate said to his mom, so Celestine looked at him.
“You always put a high standard in yourself.”
“This is not about the standard, Nate, what will others say if they know that your wife tries to kill you? That you married a lowly woman.”
“She’s not a lowly woman, her family has a high position in this town.”
“Then let her be with her same profile,” Celestine said, Nate looked at his mother, unbelievable.
“That’s enough,” Gastov said, standing up from his chair.
“Celestine, that’s enough, why can’t you just accept her? She looked lovely.”
“No, she’s not. She’s a killer.” Celestine said and looked at Beatrice. “A killer wearing an elegant dress to cover her murders, who know how many lives she has taken, or maybe she has an underground business just like his ex-boyfriend,” Celestine added, so Beatrice stopped as she remembered Darwin.
It suddenly came into her mind how she did some of his underground businesses for him and spent her time and life doing some of his dirty business just to make her feel that she really loved him.
Nate notices how Beatrice suddenly stops when his mother says the word ‘ex-boyfriend’ he suddenly looks at her and sees the pain in her eyes, which makes Nate mad.
He can’t stand seeing Beatrice like that and can’t accept how his mother treats her today as he introduces her to them.
Nate felt guilty as he saw and witnessed how his mom acted in front of his wife.
This is not what he wanted. This is not what he expected to happen.
