Chapter 9: Are You Showing Concern for Me?

Book:Tell me you love me Published:2024-5-28

By the time Lucas reached home, it was already midnight. He had a lot of business appointments today, and he was reeking of alcohol when he set foot into the house.
He stood at the door and saw a dimly lit lap casting a yellowish glow in the living room. Under that glow, Olivia was reading a book while being covered with a blanket. Her face was ghastly pale. There were some dishes on the table beside here. They were his favourite food.
There was a steaming hot bowl of hangover soup.
Some of the exhaustion he felt dissipated ever so slightly.
Although he insisted that he had no feelings for this woman, but when he set eyes on her every time, he would feel himself relax inadvertently. It was as if he was only truly at ease at this kind of moment.
“You’re back?” Olivia noticed Lucas as she got up to welcome him.
Lucas looked at her pale face and swallowed the words he was about to say. He asked dryly, “Are you feeling better now?”
Olivia’s eyes lit up, “Are you showing concern for me?”
Her blatant show of affection for him was unbearable for him.
After mumbling a vague response, he brushed past her and went into the living room. He was somewhat embarrassed.
He had never talked to Olivia in such a proper and gentle tone previously.
Olivia followed from behind, and there was a grin on her face, “I have cooked you some hangover soup. Go drink some.”
Lucas instantly recalled the night she had drugged him, and his face was replaced with a cold snicker, “Don’t tell me you have administered some drugs into this?”
Olivia was instantly pale when she heard that. Her wary glance fell upon his sharp-looking chin, “No, I didn’t…”
Olivia wanted to provide an explanation for what had happened last time, but nothing came out of her mouth.
It was indeed her fault to drug him, to want to have sex with him. She was not a good girl…
Her flushed face somehow warmed up Lucas’ heart, and as he fidgeted with his tie, he cursed at himself secretly for drinking too much again.
Olivia was holding the hangover soup and with a snort, Lucas took it immediately and gulped down on the contents without caring about the temperature.
Olivia finally revealed a little bit of smile on her face.
“Enough. You told me that you had a headache yesterday. What did the doctor say?”
Lucas felt a little uncomfortable as he was being stared by her passionate gaze. He settled onto the sofa and asked in a low voice.
Olivia felt something jerking at her heart as the doctor’s word came flooding back to her. Her face instantly looked unnatural, but since it was rare for Lucas to speak to her so properly and gently, she didn’t want to spoil the mood. Therefore, she drooped her head and muttered that she was fine.
How could she be fine? Death was waiting for her not far away.
A strong sense of bitterness was gripping her from within, but Lucas was really too important to her. She didn’t want to waste time feeling sad.
“I just had a cold. I will be fine after taking some medicine.”
After her explanation, there was something which registered suddenly in her mind.
She moved her head upwards abruptly and gaped at Lucas with expectant eyes, “Lucas… How did you know that I have go seen the doctor?”
In their phone call last night… Lucas didn’t sound like he was going to come visit her, so how did he know that she had visited the doctor?
The doctor informed her that she was sent to the hospital by the security guard, but in their house, there was no way a security guard could gain access into the premises without any prior arrangement.
Now that she thought about it, the doctor’s words were full of holes. Olivia was suddenly feeling hopeful, hopeful about something which she thought was impossible.
Could it be… Lucas was the one who had sent her to the hospital?
“Of course I didn’t know.” Lucas squashed her hopes with a hollow voice.
Only then did Olivia realize that she had blurted out what she was thinking secretly.
She bit her lips as her long eyelashes cast a shadow on her eyes. She looked pretty pitiful now.
Lucas felt something tugging at his heart, and as he furrowed his brows, he got up to leave, trying to sweep away this strange feeling.
Although he didn’t know why, but he had a feeling that staying here any longer would increase his frustration.
