“You are crying?” Isaac asked, taken aback. He hadn’t seen her cry in a long time.
He sighed and pulled her into a warm hug.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know exactly how I hurt you, but I’m really sorry.” Isaac whispered into her ear as he comforted her.
Serena cried for a few more minutes before stopping. She sat down on the desk there and dried her tears.
Isaac took a chair and sat down in front of her. “So now tell me, why were you crying?” Isaac inquired.
“It’s because of what I did to her. I mean, I’m not as evil as her, but now I’m evil because of her. She’s so stubborn. Why didn’t she change? Why is she like that? Without a heart,” Serena berated.
“She’s different from you, S. I’ve just realized that she can’t ever be like you. But you can never be like her either. You two are like opposite worlds, parallel worlds.” Isaac said and described it with his hands.
Serena chuckled.
“I’d thought for a minute that you like her.”
Isaac pouted his lips at her words.
“It wasn’t exactly the word ‘like’ that I had for her. What I had for her was ‘hope.’ I hoped and believed that she was changing or would change, but I guess I’m wrong.
Seeing how mad you were at her showed me how wrong I was.” Isaac explained
“Why? You don’t think I can be evil?” Serena asked.
Isaac chuckled.
“Look at you crying after what you did out there. I don’t think you can be evil,” Isaac teased.
Serena rolled her eyes and scoffed at him.
“By the way, why are you using the last name, Williams?” Isaac inquired.
“Because I heard it’s father’s surname too. Why? Isn’t that his last name?” Serena replied and asked.
“It is. It is. I was just wondering since you grew up with your stepfather.” Isaac answered.
“Yeah, in the beginning, I was using his but, when I was still in elementary school, Kate got annoyed that I was the one given awards instead of her and insisted I changed it,” Serena explained.
“Really? She got angry because you were given awards?” Isaac probed.
“Yes. It was graduation. I was graduating from elementary. I got called out to receive the award for the best-behaved student. The principal mentioned only our surname, and Kate thought she was the one. She rushed out to receive the award, but she got embarrassed when they sent her back and asked me to come forward. She held a grudge since then.” Serena explained again and chuckled.
“She was always like that. Even when we were so young and innocent, she always had that jealousy, that envy in her for me. Kate always hated me, but I always ignored it, hoping that one day she’ll come to love me,” Serena sighed bitterly.
Isaac sighed too.
“Kate can’t be mended. You can’t mend her,” Isaac thought out.
“You just can’t. No one can. It’s a waste, though. She’s a waste now, so you should stop worrying about her. Stop thinking about her as your sister. You know you have me, right?” Isaac comforted and grabbed her hands.
“Can you play the role of big sister and big brother to me then?” Serena teased.
“Well, you want that? You want me to become a lady for you? I’ll do that. I’m ready. How about that?” Isaac winked and stood up.
Serena stood up too. Isaac left her hands and took his to her forehead.
“You don’t seem to be sick. I’m glad. For the last three minutes, you have been acting quite alright. I’m glad.” Isaac informed.
“Wait. Why? Why do you think I’m sick?” Serena asked, glaring at him differently.
“Nothing of such happened. The king isn’t like that, Isaac. Stop thinking like that about him, or I’ll really get angry with you. He is not a pervert. He is not a bad man. He is a very good and kind-hearted person who likes acting cold because he is the king. He just wants people to respect him. He is not as bad as you think he is, so stops thinking like that about him,” Isaac said in Serena’s voice.
Serena’s eyes widened.
“You! Are you mocking me right now?” She shouted at him.
“No! I’m not. I’m out!” Isaac answered and immediately left the room.
“I’ll give you a call. Tell me all about it. You know I still don’t know the reason why you came to the king’s company dressed like a queen.” Isaac added before leaving.
Serena smiled. She laughed and held onto her purse tightly.
Gosh. He always manages to light up my day. I’m so glad that I have someone like him as my big brother. Serena thought and shook her head.
She also grabbed the file given to her before walking out of the room.
She went straight for the elevator, which took her to the top floor. She got off the elevator but didn’t see anyone.
He’s probably inside the office. She thought and went into the office.
She found the huge office empty. She dropped the items with her and turned back towards the door.
She tried listening to see if anyone was somewhere inside the vast office, but it seemed that no one was in.
Serena breathed out and went to sit behind the huge CEO’s table.
The image of when she served him coffee there flashed back into her head. She laughed and got up from the seat.
She walked to the window and looked down from it. She saw Isaac getting into his car.
“Oh, I forget to ask him. Oh shit!” She grumbled.
I’ll just call him and ask him later tonight after explaining things to him. She thought to herself.
“What’s wrong?” She heard and immediately turned to see Beta Adam behind her.
Her mouth fell open. “When did you get in?”
“Just now. I’ve been waiting for you. The king is not feeling too well, so I made some arrangements for some people to go take care of him.” Beta Adam announced.
“Really? I thought he said he was okay. I thought the doctor said…”
“He was only lying to you.” Beta Adam cut in and said.
“Really? The King lied? But why?” She asked, puzzled.
“I also don’t know. That’s the main reason he didn’t come to the office today.” Beta Adam revealed.
“Can I. Can I go back? I want to see how he is doing. Please.” Serena requested.
Beta Adam stayed puzzled for a minute before he replied.
“Of course, you can. You want to take care of him?”
“Uhm,” Serena nodded.
“But why?” Beta Adam inquired.
“It’s just that… I think I feel I should do it. I mean, he is the reason why I’m here today. So, it’s only right I do it. Thanks.” Serena rushed her reply.
She rushed to the table, picked up her purse and the file before running out from the office. She ran back in a few seconds later.
“Um… how do I go back?” She asked.
“Go to the garage. I’ll inform the driver now to take you back.” Beta Adam told her.
“Okay.” Serena rushed out of the office again and went into the elevator.
Beta Adam picked up his phone and messaged Elena.
*It worked. She’s on her way back.*
Then he dialed King Zed’s number.
“What is it, Adam? Aren’t you supposed to be working right now?” King Zed groaned out from the other end.
“Um… your Highness, I think I mistakenly told Serena that you are ill. She’s on her way back.”
“What? What do you mean you mistakenly, Adam? How am I ill exactly? Is that what you’ve been telling all my workers?” King Zed snapped at him.
“I’m sorry. I… I only told her that you had a high fever, and she thought you were seriously ill, so she just ran out from the office, and she’s on her way back to you,” Beta Adam replied, feigning sadness.
He heard king Zed sigh.
“I can tell this is yours or Elena’s plan. You don’t have to act, Adam. I’ll think of a way to punish you for acting against my orders. Make sure you inform Elena that I’ll be thinking of a way also to punish her,” King Zed grunted and immediately ended the call.
Beta Adam scoffed and brought down the call. A knock came at the door, followed by a push.
“How was it?” Elena asked, walking in.
“As expected. He wasn’t that pleased, but he was happy regardless,” Beta Adam answered.
Elena chuckled and folded her arms.
“I want those two to get closer faster. I want everything to happen so fast. I think I’ll have to come up with another plan which will involve you.” Elena informed.
“Me?” Beta Adam pointed towards himself.
“Yes, you. Since the king already knows what we are up to, even tho he enjoys he, he’ll still try to avoid it like he’s always done. I think you’ll have to do something else from now on.” Elena narrated.
“And what’s that? What do you want me to do to bring them together?” Beta Adam questioned.
“Get closer to her. Get closer to Serena and…”
“What? You want me to make the king jealous? You must be out of your mind, Elena. I can’t do that even if I have a death wish.” Beta Adam shrank.
“Watch the language you use. Don’t forget I’m still older and stronger than you.” Elena warned.
“I’m… I’m sorry. It’s just that I can’t do what you ask me to do. I just can’t.” Beta Adam shook his head.
Elena sighed and went closer to him.
“Every man in love gets jealous when another man gets closer to their woman. Now that the king knows that Serena is his and his alone. He will do everything for her, including fighting off that man who is closer to his woman. He’ll try to get closer to her too. Anything you do, he’ll do more of it. If you make her laugh, he’ll always want to make her laugh every time they are together.” Elena explained.
“You know I have no experience with all those? I’m just as clueless as to the King when it comes to ladies. How do you expect me to make her laugh? She’s totally changed now, remember?” Beta Adam groaned.
“Adam, you can do this. Zed won’t do a thing to you when he finds out, he’ll only get jealous, and that’s what we want to achieve here.” Elena encouraged.
“We all want this, you know. We all need him to change.” Elena added. Beta Adam sighed tiredly.
* *
Serena alighted the car and rushed into the castle. She went straight for the elevator that would take her up. The elevator opened, and she ran out. She proceeded to king Zed’s chambers.
She slowed down when she got closer to his door. The guards at the entrance made way for her to go in.
She knocked on the door and waited. The next second, the door started opening slowly.
She went into the room, and the door shut closed immediately.
“You shouldn’t have come,” Was the first thing she heard. She followed the voice to see King Zed coming out of an inner room, and he was wearing just an inner robe which was to lose, making him look different.
“Your Highness, I came because I was worried. Please forgive me,” She apologized.
“Adam lied to you, and you took it immediately. I’m sure Carolina taught you better than this.” King Zed said, sounding disappointed.
Serena felt her heart being pulled out from her chest at his reaction.
“I am sorry, your Highness.” Serena apologized again.
King Zed sat down on his bed and looked up at her.
“Come,” he said, looking gingerly at her.
