Chapter 638: Human Suffering

The son of the hospital director was unable to get close to Freya to obtain evidence of her insistence on undergoing surgery. He was blocked by Eagle, so he had no choice but to create a scene at the hospital.
He believed he was justified in doing so because the hospital had performed the surgery without the consent of the patient’s family. In response to the son’s uproar, the hospital provided the video of Freya undergoing surgery, even though it meant taking responsibility for their actions.
It wasn’t about shifting blame. It was a matter of admitting that the hospital’s actions had not followed proper procedures.
The hospital remained indifferent.
Fearing damage to its reputation, the hospital had no choice but to bring Freya forward.

Operating room!
Freya took part in the rescue mission. The patient was saved, but remained in a coma.
The outcome was uncertain. Would the patient wake up? Or would they never regain consciousness?
There was a possibility that they might never wake up.
Or worse, they might not survive…
Freya sat in the lounge, exhausted.
Dr. Culkin approached her and sat beside her. “The hospital has informed the patient’s family about the situation,” he said.
Freya nodded in understanding.
“Do you regret it?” Dr. Culkin asked.
Freya raised an eyebrow. “Someone asked me the same question before.”
“How did you answer?” Dr. Culkin inquired.
“I have no regrets,” Freya replied.
Taking a deep breath, she continued, “If I am unable to make it later on, please take care of the patient. If a situation like today arises again, follow the same rescue procedure. And if that doesn’t work, insert a stent.”
“I was thinking the same thing. I was actually going to discuss it with you. Inserting an artificial heart to provide blood flow is a step forward, but the valve constriction may be adjusted with a stent,” Dr. Culkin explained.
Freya thought highly of Dr. Culkin as a responsible and caring doctor. A faint smile appeared on her lips. “With you around, I feel a lot more at ease.”
Dr. Culkin glanced at her. “You should worry about yourself.”
Fearlessly, Freya replied, “I have no guilt in my heart.”
However, Dr. Culkin disagreed, perhaps due to witnessing too much of the world’s cruelty.
Or maybe his professionalism required him to remain detached.
As a doctor, he had seen plenty of human suffering, especially in the field of cardiac surgery.
A single surgery could cost tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, or millions.
Many people gave up treatment because they couldn’t afford it.
They had no choice but to await their fate.
If he let his emotions get the better of him and tried to save those who couldn’t afford treatment, how many could he truly help?
Wouldn’t it burden him with endless conflicts?
“You acted impulsively. I hope that if such a situation arises again in the future, you won’t do the same. While I may have a heart of stone, I stay in this industry to save more lives, not to leave because of cold-heartedness. Do you understand what I mean?” Dr. Culkin stated, looking at her intently.
Freya understood.
She had wanted to save the retired hospital director sincerely, but his family didn’t understand her intentions.
After experiencing such incidents repeatedly, she grew disillusioned and no longer harbored the compassionate heart of a Bodhisattva.
Furthermore, she might even consider leaving the profession someday.
“I have another surgery to attend to. I must go now,” Dr. Culkin said as he stood up.
Freya pondered Dr. Culkin’s words deeply.
From various perspectives, Dr. Culkin was right.
But as a doctor, she strongly believed that saving a life, no matter how hard, was the right thing to do.
After regaining her composure, she left the hospital.
Eagle was waiting for her.
As she approached, he immediately opened the car door for her.
Freya got in and said, “Take me to the Xinhua bookstore.”
She wanted to buy some books.
Reading was a good choice when feeling down.
The car stopped, and Freya went inside, spending half an hour selecting books before returning to the car with Eagle.
Upon arriving home, she was served with a court summons!
