Was it really worth cramming in some French just to accompany him to this banquet?
In just two short days, her learning would have been quite limited.
Yet, her attitude had left him impressed.
“What kind of doctor are you?”
“Cardiovascular surgeon, but I am currently not working at the hospital. I am involved in the research of artificial hearts.”
“Oh.” The man shrugged, sounding surprised, “I couldn’t tell, you are a doctor.”
His implication was that Freya gave off the impression of being a woman who relied on men for her looks and body to attract them.
A caged canary?
Her profession, however, was unexpected to him.
Her French was impeccable.
Elijah looked at her with a hint of curiosity in his eyes. She didn’t seem like someone who had hastily picked up French just two days ago from the way she spoke – she was no novice.
He was taken aback!
After a brief chat, more people approached Elijah to engage in discussions.
They talked about economic trends and business matters, with Freya unable to contribute, feeling out of place in the conversation.
This was a world of fame and fortune for men, with women merely playing supporting roles.
Freya wasn’t used to wearing high heels often, and her feet were aching from standing for long periods.
Someone invited Elijah.
Instead of leaving, Elijah was concerned that Freya couldn’t handle being alone in such a setting.
But Freya insisted, “You go ahead.”
She didn’t want him to be delayed on her account.
She couldn’t be a hindrance.
After a moment of silence, Elijah said, “Call me if you need anything.”
She nodded.
As Elijah walked away, she looked around. With the event bustling with people, no one seemed to notice her.
She went to the restroom.
Sitting on the toilet, she took off her shoes and relaxed for a while before returning.
While washing her hands, a French beauty beside her touched up her makeup.
Seeing Freya, she glanced down at her feet.
Freya lowered her head, instantly understanding the look in the woman’s eyes.
Having just taken off her shoes, the woman must have seen that, hence the gaze.
She calmly finished washing her hands and walked out.
Standing in the grand and luxurious hall watching the women chatting and laughing, she found it hard to fit in.
She had no knowledge of luxury items with collector’s value.
She wasn’t aware that not everyone could wear clothes from those brands just by being wealthy.
“The jewelry you’re wearing is lovely,” the French beauty who had seen Freya’s feet in the restroom said.
Freya turned to see the woman, politely smiling, “Thank you.”
“You seem so calm, you probably don’t know its value, right?”
Freya touched the necklace. She wasn’t knowledgeable about jewelry.
But she could tell the fine craftsmanship and the high-quality diamonds in the set probably held considerable value.
She considered herself quite discreet.
After all, the gemstones worn by the wealthy ladies were larger than pigeon eggs.
Pink diamonds, yellow diamonds – weren’t those more valuable than hers?
“Sometimes, it’s not about the size when it comes to determining value. It seems like you’re a novice.”
Although dressed appropriately, Freya clearly stood out among these people.
The beauty handed her a business card, “If you’re interested, you can join.”
Freya lowered her eyes, seeing a simple white card with only a mobile number and an address.
It was a high-society club not accessible to everyone.
Since it was offered, Freya had to accept, “I don’t have a card.”
The woman smiled, “I understand.”
It was evident that she had realized Freya was completely unfamiliar with their circle, an outsider.
The woman said she looked forward to Freya’s participation and walked off towards the wealthy ladies with a coquettish sway.
Freya raised an eyebrow slightly, join? Join what? Quickly dismissing these thoughts, she scanned the area, searching for Elijah.
He was standing nearby, engaged in a conversation.
It seemed he wouldn’t be free anytime soon.
She decided to find a place to sit.
At that moment, someone walked up to her.
