Elijah bent down, avoiding touching her, and used his fingertips to tuck the blanket over her. He didn’t immediately get up, softly saying, “I don’t mind.”
The moment Freya heard those words, her nose tingled and tears welled up in her eyes again. She bit her lip hard, trying to hold back and not make a sound. She tightly squeezed her eyes shut. But the tears still flowed. Trickling down from the corners of her eyes, crossing her nose bridge, and disappearing into her hair. Her body trembled uncontrollably. Elijah wanted to comfort her, but his hand lifted and silently fell back down. She needed time. He had gotten too close, and it might only make it harder for her to let go.
Elijah took a deep breath, turning around and walking towards the bed. He lay down on the bed. On his side, he looked at the woman on the couch. Sleep must have been elusive for both of them tonight.
In the morning, they pretended to have just woken up, but both had dark circles under their eyes.
They behaved as if nothing had happened, maintaining their usual relationship in front of Elowen and the children. Freya had originally planned to have the driver take her to the center. But Elijah said, “I’m heading that way.”
His company and research center were in different locations, one on North Road and the other on Business Street. No matter how they went, it wouldn’t be on the way. Freya didn’t expose him and silently got into the car. Neither of them spoke on the way. When they arrived, Freya got out of the car. “Take care on the road.”
“Hmm,” Elijah responded.
They had an unspoken agreement. Both pretending as if nothing had happened, maintaining their dignity. As Freya watched the car drive away, she turned around and saw Adam Jackson at the entrance. Her face instantly turned as cold as ice.
“I came to find you just to ask what happened that day. You were so angry. Did Ronan do something…”
“That’s enough!” Freya clenched her hand tightly by her side. Her voice was icy. “Come with me.”
Adam Jackson thought Freya had something to say to him, so he followed. Freya walked into the lab and took out a surgical knife from the disinfection cabinet. She turned around and pressed the knife against Adam Jackson’s neck, a coldness on her face that had never been seen before. “I told you not to appear in front of me again, don’t you understand? Or do you think I was just playing?”
Adam Jackson’s eyes widened in fear. Sweat started to bead on his forehead. He stuttered, “Y-y-you, you, calm down.”
“Calm down?” Freya found it ridiculous. “Get lost!”
Adam Jackson kept nodding, “Okay, okay, I’ll leave. If it wasn’t because I couldn’t reach Ronan, I wouldn’t…”
As soon as Freya heard the name Ronan, she felt a surge of anger and fury throughout her body, rushing to her brain. She couldn’t control it, the anger and rage in this moment. She directly mistook Adam Jackson for Ronan. The knife in her hand swiped down on his neck.
“Ah!” Adam Jackson let out a scream of pain.
Blood gushed out instantly. Only then did Freya snap back to reality. The person in front of her was not Ronan. She looked at the surgical knife in her hand, her rationality returning. She stepped forward to check Adam Jackson’s injury.
Adam Jackson was scared and backed away.
“Do you want to die?” Freya asked.
Adam Jackson covered his neck, a bit afraid of the current Freya. She was completely different from the Freya he knew.
“I’ll examine you,” Freya said. She found gauze and bandaging materials.
Only then did Adam Jackson believe that she was saving him, slowly lowering his hand. Freya looked at the wound, realizing that it didn’t hit any vital areas, but there was quite a bit of bleeding. She wrapped the gauze around Adam Jackson. Being close, Adam Jackson carefully looked at her face.
“Did you not get enough rest? There are bloodshot eyes.”
Freya didn’t want to talk to him anymore. “Go to the hospital and find a doctor.”
“Aren’t you a doctor?” Adam Jackson said.
Freya cut off the gauze. “I am a doctor, but I don’t want to save you.”
“Do you hate me so much?”
Freya’s face darkened. “Just go.” After saying that, she walked out.
Adam Jackson decided that he must find out what exactly Ronan had done to Freya. As he walked out, he made a phone call. And the call connected quickly.
