Freya couldn’t care less about her current bandaged appearance as she got off the car and headed inside. Just as she was about to approach the front desk, Evan happened to walk out from inside.
“Why are you here?” Evan asked.
Freya straightforwardly replied, “I’m looking for Elijah. Where is he?”
“He’s gone out,” Evan said. “Dealing with some matters. Do you have something urgent? I can call him and ask him to come back.”
Freya thought for a moment and then waved it off. “No, thanks.”
She decided to wait until he returned. She turned around and walked out. Later, Freya returned to the hospital. Coincidentally, she ran into Adam Jackson doing his rounds. He changed her medication.
“Can I be discharged and recover at home?” Freya asked.
Adam smiled and asked, “You’re a doctor yourself, do you still dislike the smell of hospitals?”
“It’s not the smell I dislike, it’s too stuffy.”
“You can. If you don’t want to come to the hospital, I can come to your house every other day to change your medication,” Adam said.
Freya immediately rejected the offer. Elijah was already unhappy. If Adam Jackson went to her house, it would only deepen the misunderstanding.
“Forget it, I’ll stay in the hospital!” she said.
Adam smiled and asked, “You seem to be afraid of me going to your house.”
“No,” Freya denied. “By the way, how did you end up coming back home?”
Adam lowered his gaze, hiding his expression. “The cosmetic surgery industry here is thriving.” He arched his eyebrow and chuckled. “Didn’t you see? Every room in our hospital is filled. Mostly young women who are never satisfied with their appearance.”
Freya sighed, indeed, women nowadays care a lot about their looks. Yet they neglect their health. She didn’t think it was right.
“Do you think it’s not good either? But if we didn’t have these people, our hospital would go bankrupt,” Adam smiled. “I have something I’d like to ask for your help with, if you’re willing.”
“What is it?” Freya asked.
“You mentioned before that you used to work at Mede, right? I have a relative with a heart condition. I don’t know if you could take a look,” Adam said.
“You’ve seen my current situation, and I’m not even working at the hospital anymore. Maybe it’s not convenient? Besides, if your relative is in Country M, the medical conditions there are not worse than here, right?” Freya wasn’t declining, she was stating the facts.
Adam knew Jeff, and Jeff could help him with this favor. He smiled and said, “My relative is at home, I just wanted you to help with a diagnosis. Are you declining?”
Freya quickly explained, “No.”
“Oh? Then what do you mean?” Adam asked.
He seemed a bit pushy. Freya was taken aback, surprised by his attitude. She pursed her lips. “You performed the surgery on me, and you were very dedicated. I appreciate that. When I get better, I’ll help you with your relative, okay?”
Adam said, “Thank you.”
Freya felt a bit uneasy, as if Adam was treating their relationship as an equal exchange, rather than the childhood friendship they had. She simply smiled faintly without responding. Adam’s demeanor had changed as he wasn’t as gentle and humble as he used to be.
Well, time changes everything, including people.
Once she understood this, she felt relieved. After all, he wasn’t someone important, so there was no need to care.
The medication had been changed, and Freya rested until a little after three in the afternoon before heading back. She waited for Elijah to come back in the evening so she could explain to him. But she didn’t see him that night. Instead, she received shocking news.
