Before Freya could answer, Elijah stepped in and declined for her.
“She’s busy, she has something to discuss with me,” he said.
Deck said, “The old master insists on seeing Freya only.”
Elijah was about to say something, but Freya stopped him. “I’ll go see him.”
She wanted to see what Jack had to say.
Elijah looked at her in silence for a few seconds before nodding. “Go ahead.”
When Freya followed Deck into the hospital room, Jack was leaning against the head of the bed. His mental state looked poor. His complexion was pale and his eyes were lifeless. He truly looked sickly.
“You’re here, it’s been a while since we last met. Are you doing okay?” Jack said with a harmonious tone.
Freya respectfully replied, “I’m fine.”
“You’re a clever child. You should know why I wanted to see you, right?” he quickly got to the point.
Freya played dumb. “Forgive my dullness, I don’t know what you’re referring to, Grandfather.”
Jack stared at her for a while. “You’ve become cunning after being with Elijah for so long. You used to be so obedient.” He sighed and continued, “I didn’t misjudge you. You’re the one who can hold his heart. I made a mistake and caused the situation we’re in today. Since you’re pretending not to know, I’ll just say it. Thorne is not a stranger, he is Elijah’s cousin after all. Do we really have to keep him locked up until death?”
Freya was puzzled. Why did Jack want to save Thorne now? During this long period of time, he should have had the chance, right?
“I didn’t want to intervene anymore, but not long ago, I found out that I have brain cancer. I’m afraid my time is running out. I don’t want to die in vain. I called you here because I want you to persuade Elijah. Thorne has been locked up for quite some time now, his mental state has collapsed, even if we release him, he won’t cause any trouble.”
Freya hadn’t forgotten what Thorne had done. She couldn’t possibly make decisions for Elijah on this matter.
“Grandfather, you know Elijah’s temper. Once he decides something, who can change his mind?” she said.
“But you’re different now,” the old man didn’t expect Freya to be so stubborn. “Elijah cares about you, he listens to you.”
“Grandfather, you’re overestimating me,” Freya continued to decline.
“Can’t you do it for the sake of my impending death?” The old man’s voice turned noticeably colder.
Freya remained firm, showing no signs of relenting. “Grandfather, you came to me about this matter instead of talking to Elijah. You must know that if Elijah can’t be persuaded, there’s no way I can do it. If you can’t do it, how can I?”
Jack couldn’t say a word, blocked by the situation. His face grew increasingly ugly, likely feeling stressed and starting to have a headache.
Deck quickly stepped forward to comfort the old man. “Don’t get angry, sir, relax. Your body can’t handle it.”
“Let me take a look.” Freya walked over.
Deck glanced at her. “If you agree, he might be better.”
Freya ignored his words and briefly examined Jack’s condition.
Jack suffered from headaches caused by the pressure of a brain tumor. He wasn’t lying. Jack had a spasm, and Deck quickly called for a doctor. After observing for a while, Freya quietly left the hospital room.
“Let’s go,” Elijah said when he saw her come out. He didn’t ask a single word about Jack’s condition. Freya silently followed him. Sitting in the car, Freya hesitated for a long time before speaking. “He’s sick, and it’s not a minor illness.”
Elijah leaned back in his seat, as if he hadn’t heard Freya speak, playing with her hair. Freya knew he heard her and continued, “It’s brain cancer.”
