The doctor agreed to perform the emergency surgery because he was acquainted with Orion. Now, the situation was not looking good.
“The patient has been saved, and he’s still breathing…”
Upon hearing the doctor’s words, Dina’s heart raced, and her phone slipped from her hand, falling to the ground with a crack. The screen shattered. Haley glanced at her, clearly sensing her guilt. Orion thought Dina was just overwhelmed and said, “The doctor said he’s been saved, so don’t worry.”
Dina lowered her head to hide her emotions. “I’m just relieved.”
Can you let me finish speaking before you react?” asked the doctor.
“What’s wrong? Didn’t you say he’s been saved?” asked Orion.
“He’s still breathing, but…” The doctor sighed and looked at Orion. “I did my best.”
Orion sensed something bad. “What happened to him?”
“He’s in a vegetative state, also known as a living dead…”
“What did you say?” Orion couldn’t believe such an outcome. “How is that possible?” He felt panicked, confused, and unable to accept it. This answer was too cruel for Evan. The only difference between a vegetative state and death was the presence of breath.
“We did everything we could.” The doctor said.
For doctors, such situations had become routine, but it was always the patients’ families who found them hard to accept.
Dina never expected such a turn of events. Though Evan wasn’t dead, he had become a vegetable. What difference did it make between being in this state and being dead? Dina couldn’t help but think that maybe fate was favoring her. Haley had been secretly observing Dina, and she noticed every subtle change in her expression. Dina looked up and met Haley’s gaze.
Haley didn’t hide her feelings, as if saying, “I see your gloating expression.”
Dina’s eyebrows furrowed instantly. This Haley seemed to be against her in every way. It seemed that there was no way to keep her secret anymore.
“Why are you staring at me?” Dina pretended to be heartbroken. “With Evan in this state, I don’t have time to argue with you. And don’t look at me with that judgmental gaze of yours.” After saying that, she walked up to the doctor and asked, “Excuse me, when can he leave the operating room?”
“He needs to spend 48 hours in the intensive care unit. If there are no post-operative infections or complications, he can be transferred to a regular ward,” Dr. Wang replied.
Orion perked up and said, “Thank you.” He knew the doctor’s capabilities, and he was certain that the doctor had done everything he could.
“I feel sorry. Although I saved his life, I couldn’t…” The doctor trailed off.
“I know you did your best.” Said Orion.
These few sentences were spoken between them as friends.
Evan was taken to the intensive care unit, and Orion sat on a bench in the corridor, lost in silence. Haley sat down next to him, reaching out to embrace him. “Orion, none of us wanted this to happen. We did our best, so don’t be too hard on yourself.”
Orion turned his head to look at her. He couldn’t quite figure out this woman, Haley. All signs pointed to her not being a good person. But her current tenderness made him feel a hint of warmth.
“Haley, thank you.”
Haley pursed her lips, feeling touched to the point of tears by Orion’s genuine gratitude. In a hoarse voice, she said, “We’re husband and wife. We should support each other. As long as you’re willing to love me, I’m willing to go through fire and water for you.”
Orion reached out and touched her hair. “Don’t say such silly things. What do I need you to go through fire and water for?”
“I’m willing to do it. I’m willing to live and die with you.”
Perhaps it was only when one loved someone deeply that they could say such things. Maybe Haley was wicked, and she had ulterior motives, however, she truly loved Orion.
Dina watched from the side. No matter how she looked at it, Haley seemed annoying. She averted her gaze, took out her phone, and made a phone call. The call connected quickly.
“Mr Silverton, it’s about Evan…”

Elijah had just met with the Lofic Family’s people. But because they were from Country M and also major shareholders of Mede, their first consideration was their own interests, followed by the bigger picture of this entire situation. From either perspective, they had no reason to save Freya. For them, Freya was the main culprit harming their interests. They stated that not adding fuel to the fire was already the greatest mercy they could show, considering Elijah’s face. Elijah understood this in his heart; they were unwilling to help because their interests were not enough.
Elijah took out his phone, about to make a call, but Dina’s call came in first, so he answered it. Dina’s voice was hesitant. He spoke coldly, “Speak!”
“Evan… he’s in a vegetative state now, at the General Hospital of the Second Military Region. Orion is also here.” Dina reported.
Elijah’s face appeared calm, but his hand trembled slightly, and his eyes couldn’t contain the sadness hidden within.
“I know.” His voice suppressed to a low tone.
“I will find the best caregivers to take care of Evan. Mr Silverton, please rest assured, I will keep you informed of any company matters,” Dina knew that without Evan, she was Elijah’s most trusted assistant.
Elijah lowered his gaze, massaging his temples. “If you’re overwhelmed, find Xander.”
“Xander is at the headquarters, he must be busy too. I have confidence in handling everything here.” Dina knew that now was a crucial moment to show Elijah her abilities. She wanted Elijah to see her presence rather than always being overshadowed by Xander and Evan.
“Mr Silverton, please rest assured, I will take care of the company’s affairs. You focus on dealing with Miss Stone’s matters over there.”
Elijah was indeed overwhelmed at the moment and could only entrust domestic matters to Dina for now. After hanging up the phone, he took a moment and called Wes.
“Yes, I want to meet him.”
It wasn’t Wes who answered the call. After a while, the message came through, “Mr Wes has agreed to meet with you.”
Elijah made a soft sound of agreement and hung up the phone. He told the driver, “Book me a flight to Country D, the next available one.”
“Yes.”
After that, he closed his eyes. It seemed like he was resting his eyes. In reality, he just didn’t want his emotions to show. Thus, he was disguising his feelings. The tense furrow of his brow constantly indicated that he was not calm at this very moment.

As Dina hung up the phone and put her phone back in her pocket, she was about to leave when Orion called out to her.
“For Evan’s matters, let me handle it. I know a lot of people in this hospital, so it’ll be easier to arrange things.”
For Dina, Evan was no longer a threat, so she was more than willing to spend more time pleasing Elijah. Giving the responsibility of this place to Orion was exactly what she wanted. She said, “Then I’ll leave Evan’s matters to you.”
“Evan is my good friend, taking care of him is what I should do.” Said Orion.
“I have other things to attend to, so I’ll leave now,” Dina said, turning around as if she didn’t want to stay here any longer. However, just as she took two steps forward, she heard Haley’s voice from behind.
