Elijah furrowed his brow and asked, “What’s the matter?” He frowned because he didn’t want to deal with something that required his immediate attention right now.
Evan didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he looked at Freya with a troubled expression.
Freya understood what he meant. “Am I not suitable to hear this? Should you stop the car and drop me off on the roadside so I can take a taxi back myself?” she suggested.
Evan quickly explained, “No, it’s just…”
“Speak up!” Elijah impatiently interrupted. He didn’t want to make it seem like he was intentionally hiding something from Freya. He was well aware of the trust issues between him and Freya. Otherwise, she wouldn’t go to great lengths to escape from him just because of a single sentence he said. So, he tried his best not to make her feel that there was anything she couldn’t know.
“The director of Riverside Haven Mental Hospital called just now and said… said…” Evan hesitated. It wasn’t something worth hiding, but the nature of the matter seemed slightly inappropriate in front of Freya.
The more he acted this way, the more it seemed like there was something unspeakable. Freya, on the other hand, became interested. She stared at Evan, waiting for his next words. Elijah’s expression gradually turned dark.
With determination, Evan continued, “Jack sent a woman to Thorne, saying that she’s there to bear his child and continue his lineage. The director called to ask if they should allow the woman into Thorne’s room.”
After hearing this, Elijah let out a cold laugh mixed with heavy sarcasm. It was unclear whether he was mocking Jack’s ridiculous actions or the absurdity of the situation itself. Evan couldn’t help but think that the person who came up with this idea was truly talented.
“I can’t believe they’ve reached such a desperate point that they would even come up with such shameless ideas. It’s truly laughable.” Evan remarked.
After finishing his comment, Evan got back to the main point, “What should we do?”
Elijah lifted his gaze, staring at Evan. “Is there even a need to ask for something like this?” He had confined Thorne in the mental hospital to make him suffer, not to indulge him.
Evan immediately understood. “I know what to do.”
“Hmm.”
The car arrived at the hotel, and Elijah and Freya got out while Evan drove off to Riverside Haven Mental Hospital.
Freya had been enduring in silence all the way. Now that Evan was gone, she immediately spoke up, “Is Thorne mentally ill?” She had just heard that Thorne was in a mental hospital.
Elijah held her hand and led her into the hotel, saying, “Almost there.”
At times like this, Elijah didn’t like to talk about those filthy things. Freya didn’t press for more information. She could roughly understand what had happened. No matter how much Elijah tortured Thorne, she felt it was not excessive. After all, Thorne had kidnapped Kai.
Thinking of her child, she couldn’t hide her guilt. “Is Kai okay?”
“He’s fine. He talks a lot and runs everywhere after he learned to walk.”
To provide a bigger play area for their son, Elijah had attended that auction specifically for the castle being auctioned off. Their current home, although not small, didn’t have much space for Kai to play. At most, there was the living room. Every day, Elowen took him to the park and amusement park. Freya listened with a mix of relief and heartache. Elijah stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her. She avoided his gaze.
“When you left, did you think of him?” he asked, his voice low.
Freya whispered, “I did. He’s your son, and I know you’ll protect him and take care of him.”
Elijah stared at her for several seconds, then asked in a deep voice, “Have you thought of me?”
