Ranita thought she had misheard.
But as she took a few steps back, the knocking on the door sounded again. Ranita furrowed her brow and walked to the door, peering through the peephole once more.
There was still no one outside.
After the previous incident, Ranita became cautious. Instead of opening the door, she continued to observe for a while.
But there was no movement outside.
Ranita went back inside. Just as she was about to lie down, the knocking on the door sounded again. Irritated, Ranita got out of bed, but there was still no one outside…
If she didn’t firmly believe in scientific materialism, she would have thought she was seeing ghosts!
Ranita decided to ignore it and went back to sleep. She had been quite tired, but the repeated knocking made her somewhat concerned.
Ranita couldn’t fall asleep due to her annoyance.
“Are you asleep?” Ranita sent a message to Eve, hoping to chat with her best friend. However, Eve didn’t reply.
Ranita didn’t think much of it. Eve’s work sometimes kept her busy at night, so if she didn’t reply, she must be working.
Ranita didn’t bother Eve further.
She scrolled through her contact list and eventually landed on Brendon’s name.
With hesitation, she nervously sent a message: “Goodnight.”
Just like before, her heart was in her throat, anticipating his reply yet fearful of receiving no response.
“Meow meow!” Her phone vibrated twice, and Brendon quickly replied, “Why aren’t you asleep? Is Ayaan not behaving?”
Ranita was about to reply when the phone rang.
It was Brendon calling.
As soon as his deep and cold voice sounded, her ears started to feel warm.
He asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing! Just wanted to say goodnight to you.” Pausing for a moment, Ranita rubbed her ear and said, “Ayaan said he had a great day today. Thank you.”
“I am Ayaan’s father, and I have a responsibility to take care of him,” Brendon said, and she understood.
Apart from that period of marriage, Brendon had a strong sense of responsibility towards everything.
He also had a strong plan and schedule for his own life, but seven years ago, she had suddenly appeared like a blot of ink thrown onto his schedule, dirtying it and unable to be erased.
During those years, Ranita often felt guilty.
“Hmm!” With her eyelashes lowered, Ranita replied with a slightly subdued voice. Brendon asked, “Are you unhappy?”
“No.” She was just thinking about some things. Ranita felt a bit stifled, “I’m going to rest now. You should rest early too.”
“Wait, you…” Brendon didn’t finish his sentence before the internal line rang.
“Let me take this call first.” Ranita quickly hung up and answered the internal line, “Is this Miss Bowman? We received a package for you, and I’ve arranged for someone to deliver it to your room. Please be aware.”
As soon as she hung up, the knocking on the door sounded, “Hello, could you please take the package?”
Ranita opened the door and received a medium-sized cardboard box from the hotel staff. The box wasn’t small, but it didn’t feel very heavy when she held it.
Ranita glanced at it and asked curiously, “Do you know who sent it?”
She hadn’t given her address to anyone, so logically, no one would send anything to the hotel.
Especially since she had just changed rooms.
Squinting her eyes, she saw the room number. Doubts arose in her mind, and she called out to the hotel staff, “Do you have scissors here?”
The hotel staff immediately fetched scissors and helped her open the box. But the next moment, she let out a scream, “Ah… What is this…”
