Brendon glanced at the woman, a faint smile in his eyes, and softly said, “Hmm, alright.”
He handed the phone to Ranita. “You take it!”
“No, you answer it!” Ranita wanted to hear what Shannon had to say, but she didn’t want to answer directly.
Ranita was hugged tightly, pressing her body against his. The man took her hand and led her towards the sofa, soon cradling her on his lap, his face against hers, breathing into her ear. “If you don’t answer, I won’t answer either.”
“Really!?” Ranita raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you afraid of hurting her feelings?”
“The break-off is already a settled matter. She has to accept it,” Brendon knew this would be a big blow to Shannon, but since he had brought it up, he was prepared.
Ranita nodded and answered the call.
“Brendon… You finally answered my call!” As soon as the call connected, Shannon’s sobbing voice came through, soft and nasal, half pitiful and half hoarse, truly heartbreaking.
“Brendon, are you really planning to abandon me? I know I was wrong, can’t you forgive me this time? You promised me that you would marry me in this lifetime, let me be your Mrs. Stuart, and be with me to have children and spend our lives together! How can you go back on your word?”
“Brendon…” Shannon’s crying grew louder, heart-wrenching. “These past two days, I can’t eat or sleep. My world has crumbled… Brendon, look at me, please.”
Finally, Shannon let out a mournful wail of pain. “Can you really bear to see me die?”
Ranita listened silently, not saying a word, and handed the phone back to Brendon. He could beak off the engagement with Shannon, but he couldn’t bear the burden of taking a life because of it.
“Take it,” Ranita mouthed, placing the phone near Brendon’s ear.
Brendon furrowed his brows, his voice cold. “Shannon, I won’t change my mind about the engagement. Besides, your body is your own, take care of yourself, rest well. I’m hanging up.”
Brendon quickly hung up the phone.
The phone didn’t ring again, and it seemed like Shannon had finally quieted down. Ranita couldn’t help but worry and asked, “Is she going to be okay?”
“Her family is taking care of her, she’ll be fine,” Brendon furrowed his brows, finding the situation a bit tricky, but he had made up his mind, so the divorce wouldn’t change.
Ranita pursed her lips and nodded, but her mood wasn’t great.
“Don’t think too much, I’ll handle it. This matter has nothing to do with you… All you need to do is take care of Ayaan.”
Hopefully, that would be the case!
Ranita had anticipated it, knowing that breaking off with Shannon wouldn’t be so easy.
“Why are you spacing out?” Brendon asked her, stealing a kiss from her cheek. His eyes were deep, shimmering with a passionate light that hid a nearly devouring intensity. “Ranita, I want to kiss you…”
Ranita blushed at his words.
Why did he have to ask? It’s so embarrassing!
Another soft and sweet kiss fell silently. Ranita’s heart had long been in chaos, and all sorts of jumbled thoughts flooded her mind. At one moment, she worried whether Ayaan would suddenly be brought back, and at another moment, she wondered if Brendon would stay tonight. Would he prepare something…?
Just thinking about these things made Ranita’s face burn red.
Her breathing became unsteady, and sweat beads slowly formed in the palms of her hands. The sound of her gently exhaling from her throat changed its tone.
