Ranita pushed his hand away, frowning. “Brendon, let go! My hand hurts!”
Her hand hurt? He was hurting inside too.
“Why didn’t you answer the phone?” Brendon persisted, and Ranita was so angry she could hardly catch her breath. “You call me in the middle of the night with all these random questions. Can’t you just leave me alone?”
“No! What’s your relationship with Jedidiah?” Brendon wouldn’t let it go. “Is Benedict really your father? Didn’t you tell me both your parents were peasants?”
Logically speaking, if Ranita called Benedict her father there was only one possibility: she had married into his family.
This thought made Brendon furious beyond words.
“How can Benedict not be my father?” Ranita sneered coldly at him. “And as for my relationship with Jedidiah… why do I have to tell you anything?! We have no connection whatsoever, so please stop bothering me.”
