“Brendon is still busy outside, don’t be angry with him when he comes,” Steve said with a smile, apologizing again. “I’m really sorry, it was my negligence.”
Ranita pursed her lips and was about to speak when the door to the hospital room opened.
The woman looked up and met Brendon’s dark eyes…
Steve had good instincts. “You two talk alone, I’ll go out first.”
At the door, Brendon nodded at Steve. He closed the door and sat down next to Ranita, looking at the sleeping child in a low voice. “The police are looking for clues.”
“Brendon… thank you,” Ranita paused and forced a bitter smile on her lips. “I didn’t want Ayaan to have too much involvement with you, who knew that you were already in contact with him?”
“This little rascal didn’t tell me,” Ranita looked at Brendon, suddenly unsure of what to say. Four years had passed, and she had become much more open-minded than before.
“I’m sorry, it was me who told Ayaan not to tell you!” Brendon paused and continued, “I still want to apologize to you. I shouldn’t have said those things back then.”
Brendon’s heart was in turmoil.
“I regretted it as soon as I said it. I’ve been wanting to apologize to you, but you never came back home.” Brendon’s eyes carried a hint of resentment. “You left without a word for several years.”
“I didn’t even know about Ayaan’s birth.” Brendon’s voice was cold and low.
Ranita knew he was angry.
He was also restraining himself.
“What’s the use of saying all that now!” Ranita pursed her lips. She didn’t reveal what happened back then, as it involved Shannon. Even if she did, Brendon might not believe her!
“It’s useful!” Brendon held Ranita’s fingers tightly. “Ranita, do you still have someone you like now?”
Ranita looked at Brendon, her eyes welling up with tears.
“Yes! I still like someone a lot!”
She had always liked that person, even after all this time had passed, even if she wanted to forget, she still liked him very much.
Her eyes turned red, filled with teardrops.
Brendon’s heart sank. He lowered his eyes and gently let go of her hand, his voice tinged with loneliness, “Is that so?”
Ranita pursed her lips and remained silent.
The atmosphere in the hospital room turned cold and desolate.
“Mommy…” In an instant, the little figure on the hospital bed opened his eyes. With his big, dark eyes, he looked at Ranita and then at Brendon. In a sweet voice, he called out, “Uncle… Why are you here?”
The energetic child, despite still having a fever, started chattering away.
“Mommy, this is Uncle, whom I met on the plane…” After drinking half a cup of water, the little one looked at Ranita with a pitiful expression. “Uncle is so handsome, I thought he was my daddy, but he said he’s not!”
Brendon was speechless.
He regretted it so much! If he had known that the little one was his son, he definitely wouldn’t have denied it outright.
He even scolded Ayaan!
“Yeah! Daddies can’t be randomly recognized!” Ranita ruffled her son’s head, silently raising an eyebrow at Brendon, playfully provoking him.
“I know! Uncle is not my daddy, my daddy is a firefighting hero!” After saying that, the little one proudly lifted his chin and then winked at Brendon. “Uncle, I like Uncle Pearson, so I want Uncle Pearson to be my new daddy.”
“Do you agree?”
