When the sun went down a little, Mateo was standing in the courtyard of the Santangel family.
Umberto came out of the house and threw a jacket over his arms.
-Then go to the hospital to change and act carefully so Jaime’s men don’t find out.
Mateo nodded, holding the clothes in his hands for a long moment before speaking:
-Thank you.
Umberto was about to enter the house and froze for a moment at those words. He laughed lightly.
-I’m not doing this simply to help the Seco family, I just can’t stand Jaime.
Yes, Umberto was an entrepreneur and entrepreneurs never did anything without profit in mind.
He chose to help reunite Alfredo’s grandson and help them oust Jaime from the Seco family, partly out of sympathy for Alfredo and for the sake of his grandfather’s friendship with Alfredo, but mostly because it would be profitable.
“If Jaime gets in that seat, with the malice he has for me, he’s sure to get me into a lot of trouble later, and I don’t have time to deal with a constant stream of problems, so better to get it over with.”
Umberto finished and left the courtyard.
Mateo stood still, watching his back, and let out a chuckle.
“Turns out Umberto is a soft person, too.”
When it was completely dark, Umberto’s men took Mateo to the hospital.
The hospital was dark and eerie at night, and now that the weather had slowly started to cool down, it was a little heavier in the hospital.
Mateo walked quietly through the hospital corridors in his white coat and mask.
Umberto’s people had found a way to divert attention away from them.
Jaime sent someone to watch Alfredo, but none of them expected Mateo to be found by the Santangel family, and they had let their guard down after a boring day at the hospital.
It was already late and the men guarding the wards peered into the darkness, drowsy.
As Matthew made his way to the ward door, the watchman looked up to see the doctor in a white coat with a tray of medicine in his hand, only to lower his eyes again with a yawn.
There were often doctors who made rounds at night to change medication and nothing seemed amiss to them.
Matthew entered the room without incident, a cold sweat on his forehead as he closed the door behind him.
The room was empty and Secretary Diaz was not there, so Alfredo was alone in his bed on a respirator.
Mateo stood in the doorway for quite a while before making up his mind and taking a step towards Alfredo.
When he reached the bed, he stood next to it, looking at the person in it from a solitary position.
It was the first time she had seen her grandfather up close and personal. Before, she had only seen him on television and in the newspapers she collected, and her impression of him was only that of a stately, quiet old man.
But now Alfredo, thin, with white hair and without a trace of emotion in his face, lay there senseless, like a common old man.
Mateo looked at him with a sour and indescribably sad heart.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. His grandfather was supposed to stand tall and powerful, raising his hand and speaking with swagger. His father had spoken of his grandfather even when he was very young.
“In my father’s mouth, my grandfather was stern and a little eccentric, but very powerful and capable, and many people feared and respected him, but also submitted to him.”
“He was a great grandfather, how did he become this?”
Matthew put down the things in his hand and squatted by the hospital bed, carefully holding the old man’s hand, and murmuring with a tremor:
-Grandfather, I’m back. I’m sorry I’m late, I’ve made you suffer so much…..
The words had barely left his mouth when the door to the ward suddenly opened.
He threw his head back and his eyes sharpened as he looked.
There were two men standing in the doorway, in front was a young man with a somewhat thin face, handsome features, a teenage look and eyes that looked a little tired.
Behind him was a middle-aged man with an ordinary face, who seemed to have a low presence and a silent look.
It was Pedro and Secretary Diaz.
As soon as the two entered, they saw a man in a white coat and mask crouched by the old man’s hospital bed, still holding his hand.
Pedro’s first reaction was that Jaime had sent someone to kill the old man.
His expression tensed violently and he was about to scream when his mouth was suddenly covered by Secretary Diaz behind him.
Secretary Diaz closed the door to the room quickly, blocking all sight and sound, with his palms still covering Pedro, and whispered:
-Mr. Pedro, calm down, he is not a bad guy, he is one of ours.
The room was silent, so the whispered words of Secretary Diaz were heard by Pedro and Mateo at the same time.
Both were a bit puzzled.
Mateo was amazed that he had not informed anyone of his actions and how this man knew his identity.
Once Pedro had calmed down, Secretary Diaz let go of his hand and walked briskly toward the hospital bed.
He kept his eyes on Mateo, looking so excited he didn’t know where to put his hands and feet, and his voice was breathless as he said:
-Sir, is that you?
Secretary Diaz’s voice was almost inaudible, with caution and a face full of hope.
Pedro also approached and when he heard Secretary Diaz, his mind went blank and his whole body froze, staring incredulously at the man in the white coat in front of him.
“He was the cousin I had never met?”
During the day, he even escaped from his apartment, but unexpectedly came to the hospital at night on his own initiative, what did this person intend?
Peter looked at him with complicated eyes, assessing him.
The man in front of him stood erect and his face was masked so that he could not see his face, but those eyes were bright and piercing.
This was the man Alfredo had been looking for. The eyes alone were much better than Jaime’s, at least there was no greed or malignant desire in them, no loathsome emotions.
With an astringent feeling in his heart, Pedro looked at the old man in the hospital bed and stood there saying nothing.
Mateo knew from the moment Secretary Diaz opened his mouth that this man was Alfredo’s confidant, and he looked at Pedro beside him, with questioning eyes.
Secretary Diaz hurried to introduce him:
-Sir, this is Pedro, his cousin.
At this point, he paused and added:
-Someone who can be trusted.
Matthew then dropped his heart and removed the mask from his face.
Tears welled up in Secretary Diaz’s eyes as he saw the face, Mateo’s face was so similar to Luis’ that although it had already shocked him when he had seen the video, the impact was even greater when he saw him in person.
Pedro also froze, since when he was little, he used to be in Alfredo’s arms, and Alfredo often showed him pictures of his uncle. Although he had never seen him in the flesh, he was very familiar with his uncle’s face.
With this face, no paternity test was necessary to establish that this person was definitely from the Seco family.
Mateo was in no mood to discuss the resemblance of his face to that of his father. He grabbed the wrist of Secretary Diaz and said seriously:
-What’s the matter, is it true that grandfather was drugged by that beast Jaime, how is he now, what did the doctor say and when will grandfather wake up?
He asked so many questions that Secretary Diaz’s wrists ached from scratching so much, but he was glad to know that Mateo was concerned about his grandfather.
-Sir, calm down! There are people outside, keep your voice down so you don’t get caught.
Secretary Diaz opened his mouth to remember.
Mateo was a little more stable, but he was still gritting his teeth.
-Jaime, that impostor, doesn’t appreciate the love he receives from his grandfather, but dares to hurt him? Who gave him the courage to do that?!
Pedro raised his head when he heard those words and spoke in surprise:
-Wait, wait, wait, what impostor?
“How is it possible that he doesn’t understand a word, weren’t he and Jaime twin brothers?”
Both Mateo and Secretary Diaz turned their heads toward him, both with surprise in their eyes.
-Didn’t you know?
Mateo was aware of Pedro’s private search for the young Mr., and thought Pedro knew the truth.
But seeing his dazed look now, it seemed that he knew nothing about it.
Peter’s eyes were startled.
-He told me that he and you were twin brothers who were raised separately for fear of being victims of someone with evil intentions.
-That’s bullshit! -Mateo didn’t hold back and blurted out.
Being “twin brothers” with Jaime was really grossing him out!
