Glenn not liking what she had just said, let out a frown asking Duke to promise her that he was going to be her papa. Promising her, he agreed and the joy that followed afterward was bewildering. Asking about Eva’s welfare and equally where she was, Duke let out a smile on and Bethany relating that Eva was asleep and was not feeling agreeable as she was thinking that Henry doesn’t love her, made Duke further ask whether there was a problem.
Bethany explained what had happened to her and Duke listening to the story keenly, felt a cold sweat running down his back as he was almost in the same situation with his mom. Thinking to himself that his case will not be like that as his mom has been the one persuading him to get a girl, he extended his hand on her shoulder telling her not to worry as everything was going to be okay.
“I pray for that to happen as soon as possible because she is completely broken as she loves him too much”, Bethany voiced out thinking back to what her friend was going through at the particular moment in her life.
Thinking of the reason as to why he had come there, he asked where Mrs. Marvin was as he stared at Bethany, his countenance had changed into a concerned one before she could even respond to his question.
Telling him that she had gone to visit a neighbor whose daughter had just put to birth, Duke said that he had come to meet with her as there was something that he needed to discuss with her and it was very important.
His words fell on Bethany’s ears and looking at her face, she had so many questions running through her mind. Wanting to know whether he had something to say to her mom, her words got suspended from her mouth as Glen called out to Duke saying she was feeling pains in the bruised areas.
” Oh my goodness, my baby is feeling pains, what can I do to remedy the situation?”, he asked kissing at the spots and thinking about her belly.
Glen’s laughter could be heard right at the road and seeing them play like that, Eva called out to Duke as she walked towards their direction. Catching sight of Eva and the soreness of her face, Bethany rose to her feet walking to her as he asked whether she was feeling okay.
Letting out a smile on her lips, she nodded positively to her question, as her gaze met Dukes. Leading her to sit on the bench loser to Duke, Eva saluted him and with a surprised look, she creamed out asking what had happened to Glenn, as her eyes narrowly met the bandage parts of her skin.
“It is nothing, she fell in an attempt to rush to me, when she saw me coming*, Duke immediately responded to her not wanting her to feel like Bethany was being negligent.
” I am sorry that I was not careful with her Eva”, Bethany spoke out feeling all remorseful but Eva told her not to apologize as she is the only one that she can trust with her sisters because she knows her heart. Feeling honored to listen to her say that, Bethany let out a smile.
Eva extending her hands to take Glenn from Duke, received a shock from her as she clung unto Duke’s dress not eating to let go. Veering around her gaze to her friend, she wondered what was going on but Bethany letting out a big laugh, told her to get used to the situation as Glenn had found herself a dad.
Narrating what had happened earlier when Glenn had bruised her body, she explained that not even a single tears fell out of her eyes when Duke was applying the chemical on her injury. Not believing what her friend was telling her, Eva turned to Duke and asked whether it was true and he nodded in confirmation.
“So you both mean to tell me that, she did not cry when you were disinfecting her wound?”, she asked again thinking that her ears were playing some sort of trick on her but she had the same response. Looking at Duke, she told him not to take away her little sister with all that sweetness because she might just end up feeling hurt as it may look like he is her father and they all burst out laughing. Bethany felt good seeing her friend laughing and that was something she will want to happen every day.
Asking Eva how she was feeling and what her expectations were, he told her not to feel alone as they are all there for her. Eva listened to him and felt hurt as she instantly thought of Henry, her gaze was lowered as she tried an effort to hide her tears from Duke and Glenn.
” You do not have to very Eva and I am sorry if I said something that did not have to say”, Duke spoke out feeling all remorseful. As they were still talking, Mrs. Marvin arrived at the house and on seeing Duke, she was happy to know that, he still cared about them.
Walking into the lot, she waved at them as she approached slowly. Putting on a smile, Duke rose to his feet, making sure that Glenn was comfortable in his arms, and with liveliness, he embraced Mrs. Marvin, asking her about her day and health as he helped her to have a seat on the bench.
“I am still alive and grateful to my creator for his never-ending mercy and you, how are is your day doing, and thank you so much for caring after my daughter and Eva the other day, I was scared that the flood might have been disastrous at the hospital where you all were”, she bounced out creating a tense atmosphere as Eva and Bethany looked at each other and turning their gazes to Duke, Eva winked her left eye.
Knowing the kind of friend she was having, Bethany could not run away from that topic as it was going to be a firm one as soon as she was going to be left alone with her friend. Duke let out a smile, told Mrs. Marvin that it was no big deal. Looking around and not seeing Henry, she inquired about him as well and the moment Henry’s name was being raised, Eva could not help but feel awful as she felt used by him. Thinking about his care and attention towards her at the hospital, she could not wrap her fingers around his deceitful attitude.
“He is fine as well ma’am”.
” I am happy to know that”, she murmured.
Noticing the bandage on Glenn’s body, Bethany’s mom was already ready to start shouting when Duke told her not to as everything was okay fine now. Veering around to Bethany as she inquired of her why her guest was outside, Bethany tried to explain that he met them outside and decided to join, and also, he was asking after you with a serious face.
“You wished for us to talk about something Duke?”, her mom asked him with a smile as she was thinking about him wanting to talk about marriage not knowing that he had something else that was more intense than that.
Looking at Bethany and not knowing how to approach the situation, he knew that he had to find a way to do so. Notifying her about the seriousness of what he was about to ask her, he suggested that it was in her best interest to maintain her calm as he was sitting in front of her facing her and making sure that his question did not freak her out.
The unrest that had formed on Eva’s face and well as Bethany’s, was something even a writer could not describe and the questions that could be noticed on her mother’s idiom, could not be ignored either. Asking what the matter was as she was beginning to panic, made Duke more skeptical about how he was going to approach the matter and telling her to be as can as possible, she had to have a focused remembrance, and turning to Bethany he said the same thing too.
Taking a few more seconds to memorize what he was going to say, he finally found the right words to use, and calling out on Mrs. Marvin’s attention he asked,
“I will like to know whether you have any documentation stating that you have a heart problem, ma’am”. Raising such a question, Everyone’s attention was focused on him and Mrs. Marvin demanding to know what he meant by that, Duke asked her to calm down and give attention to him to explain why he had to ask that question.
There was a silence that came after he had said that and Bethany was impatient to listen to what he had to say. Having all their eyes on him, Dule cleared his throat and said,
” The consultant you went to meet with the other time, says that he is having a different report from what you brought at the hospital”.
There was an air of more confusion as they all inquired themselves what he was trying to say but not being able to understand, Eva further raised a question on what he meant by all that, and Duke let out a hefty sigh, explained that there must have been a problem with the test result that Mrs. Marvin is having or better still, someone tampered with them for his or her selfish motives.
“Mommy, I have to go lit now, there’s something I need to check out but I will be right back pretty quick,”, Henry told his mom, kissing her forehead and left for the parking where his car was parked in the yard and he enters inside and drives out of the lawn. His mother standing on her balcony and watching him leave the house, she felt relieved knowing that he was going to settle down anytime and her smile broadened as she thought of having grandchildren.
Henry drove to a phone shop to purchase a phone for Eva to keep the communication with her. From there, he had in mind to do other things in preparation for his outing with her as he needed for the day too. e very special bit not knowing how to approach her after what had happened, he thought of a way to do so and thinking hard to find an alibi, he came up with a perfect one.
The cold breeze blew into the terrace, sweeping all the dead flowers that were lying on the ground and meeting with Bethany and the others that were seated in silence as everyone pushed to the limit to analyze what was going on, Mrs. Marvin rose to her feet and walked out of them heading the way into her house with tears in her eyes.
Duke feeling all down catching sight of her in that mood, looked at Eva and Bethany who could not seem to wrap their fingers around what he was asserting. Taking a look at Glenn who had fallen so deeply into sleep in Duke’s arms, Eva stood up and walked nigher to him, she extended her hands as she took her into her arms and excused herself as she walked into the home.
” What was all that about?”, Bethany asked feeling so confused and hurt at what he had said thinking that he just wanted to hurt his mother’s feelings but Duke raised his eyes and asked Bethany whether she thinks that he could joke around with something like that, said,
“I was also shocked when the doctor told me that he could not search for a donor to carry out the surgery as the test results showed that your mother was not suffering from any heart problem”.
