Eva went mute and her facial expression had changed to a guilty person. It had been more than some hours that things were not settled and only Eva could put a stop to this.
Carol interrupted the moment, as she told everyone to step out so that she could check on the patient and know how she is doing.
Henry kissing Eva’s forehead, left Bethany and Eva in a state of shock so Carol was left with her mouth open.
“Are you okay now?”, Henry raised a question to Eva waiting for her response before he could leave the ward. Eva letting out a smile with a confused look, she smile nodded her head positively as her gaze was turned to her friend.
Carol swallowing the lump of spit that had formed in her throat, called a question to Henry whether he was done with the Mr. Romantic role, and Henry smiling answered that he was done as he walked from Eva’s side heading to the door.
Bethany who had been staring at everything, felt happy for her friend and that happiness had given rise to her forgetting about the anger she was feeling for Duke, but just when she was able to think of something else, a voice from behind made her remember that Duke was still standing behind.
” Can you just shut up for a minute and don’t spoil the beautiful moment I am having here?”, Bethany let out those words and before she could hold her mouth, they were already out. Her legs weighing as though a bag of cement was placed on them, she had sweat running down her forehead after realizing what she had just said.
Panicking and turning slowly like a thief that was faced with no escape, she looked at Duke and Henry’s faces moving her lips and lowering her gaze with so much shame.
“I am so sorry Sir Duke, I did not mean to say the things I just said, I am sincerely sorry”, she spoke out running away. Duke who had not even heard what she had said, asked his friend Henry what he had said wring and Henry too was confused.
Pulling her mouth as she was outside, Bethany felt sorry for what she had let out and the guilt was shattering her as she could not think not to do anything at that moment. She went the other way to the terrace, sitting on a bench that was there alone, looking like a fool and wondering why she had to say that.
” How disrespectful could I be?”, Bethany asked herself weeping. Carol was done with the check-up, and coming out she told Henry the situation and that Eva was doing fine already.
“If everything keeps on being like they are, she will probably be discharged tomorrow”, Carol spoke out with her full attention on Duke who was wondering what was wrong with Bethany for her to have run off like that.
Approaching Duke who was all stressed out, she asked him why he was like that but he just let a smile and told her not to bother but Carol being ad persistent as she is, insisted that Duke share his burden with her as she is his friend.
Henry noticed that the atmosphere was getting tense, inquired whether he could spend some time with Eva as he needed to be by her especially with the psychopath that was roaming around her.
Carol told him he could be with her, but he has to avoid sensitive things that might disturb her. Bethany who had thought of her mother who was still at the reception with Carl decided to stand up and go to her so that they could go back home.
Wiping her tears as she murmured,
” You do not have to cry Bethany, he does not even know that you exist, to you are just a nice little girl that needs help and that’s all”.
The weather was becoming darker and it could be felt that it was going to rain at any moment so she walked to the reception, to tell Carl to take her mother home and also to let her know that, Eva was finally awake.
“I am so fortunate that Carl came along with me, if not I do not know how I would have done with mommy home seeing how expensive these taxi drivers are”, she mumbled taking out her purse and notifying me that she was not having enough money for transportation.
Reaching the reception hall, Bethany going down to her feet by her mother, let out that Eva was awake and fine. Turning to Carl, she begged him to please take her mother home so that she could have something to eat and also take her drugs.
” Mommy, other is still some food left for you as it reserved it for as I was aware that you have to take your medicines”, she informed her mother.
Letting out a smile, Mrs. Marvin, thanked her daughter and asked whether she was not coming home with them and Carl feeling jealous as he had watched how Duke and Bethany look at each other, forced his words in as he also added that he wanted to catch up old time with his friend.
Bethany understanding her mother, told her not to bother as she was going to come home straight away and veering around to Carl, she told him that they will have all the time to spend together after Eva will be discharged but for now, she needed to be with her friend.
Carl pushed to the limit to bring about for her to see reasons with him as he touched upon the fact that, Duke and Henry were there to take care of Eva but Bethany reminding him of the reality that Eva is also her friend and her childhood friend at that so she needed to be these.
Rising on her feet and touching Carls’s cheek, she told him not to bother as she was going to make a program for the both of them to have fun like during their old school days.
Carl could not believe that Bethany had just caressed his check like she always did years ago and stretching out his hand and holding Bethanys, asked her why she had not forgotten what she always did back then in school and Bethany responded that, it was because they are factual friends.
That simple gesture of hers awakened a lot of things that were as sleep, and little did she know that Carl did not look at her as a friend but as a lady, he could be with and get down with.
Taking her mother’s hands and helping her to get on her feet, she told Carl to take care of her and also to drive safely back home. Walking closer to him and hugging him as he did not want to get to, she smiled out and thanked him for accompanying her to the hospital.
Giving her mom a very tight hug and a kiss on her cheek, she told her to get some rest and to take care of little Glenn while she is at the hospital. With a deep breath, she pleaded with Carl to take her now before the rain begins.
Waving her hand, Mrs. Marvin said bye to her daughter as though it was going to be the last time they will be catching a glimpse of each other.
Bethany who had been hiding her emotions and her gashes from her mother, sat down on the seat as she watched them go out of the hospital. Holding her mouth from jot letting the sound of her cry get out, she stood up and went to the lavatory so as to wash off her face and to breathe in, she walked in the corridors and finally she was in the washroom.
“May I have a seat?”, Henry spoke out in the quietest possible way as he approached Eva and she accepted knowing what he wanted to ask from her but what she did not know what that, while she was asleep, some things had taken place and that had made Henry have additional questions.
Seating down and asking Eva how she was feeling, she took in a deep breath of consolation hearing that come out of Henry’s mouth. She felt like she had won the jackpot and she was happy having him there. Noticing that he was not dressed in work attire, she asked whether he had not gone to work that day and Henry responding to her question, said he could not have concentrated if he had gone to the office knowing that someone was after her life.
Listening to this, Eva rolled her eyes out of Henry’s guidance and she asked her herself so many questions and it could be seen from the twist on her forehead. Breaking the silence, Henry muttered,
“I am sure you might be asking yourself how I got to know about this not so?.
” I do not know what you are talking about”, Eva cut in trying so hard to lie about the situation but Henry held her hand assuring her not to be afraid as he was there to help her.
Eva, feeling Henry’s hand on hers, let out a tear as she was aware that, what she was about to say was going to cause her the little happiness she was getting a kick out of at that moment. Grinding her teeth in getting mouth, she decided to keep her mouth shut as no one was supposed to know the truth about her past.
Henry noticed that Eva was somehow lost in her thoughts, called out her name softly asking what the matter was and she answered back,
“There is no problem Sir Henry and it was just an accident and the only problem I have now is how to explain that I burned the house”, she spoke out weeping as she made an effort to sit up.
Feeling her pain and frustration, Henry told her not to bother as he was going to take care of that and also other things. Henry rising to his feet, helped her to support her back as he moved closer to fix pillows behind her back.
With their gaze meeting, Eva felt a weak feeling in her heart and her whole body got paralyzed for some minutes while Henry could feel her breath on his neck as he adjusted her back on the pillows. Inquiring whether or not she was feeling comfortable, Eva was lost at the sight of Duke’s well construct the body and the sweet smell from his essence.
Without her being able to hold back her words, she asked him why he was so concerned about her like that, and Henry without thinking twice said,
” I love you Eva and I am sure that you must have noticed it as I can see it in your eyes that you love me too”.
Eva feeling as though the universe was against her, lowered her head in self-pity as she tried out like a baby. Henry who was confused by the situation thought that he had said something bad so he asked what the problem was but Eva just kept on crying as she imagined all the terrible things that she had done and how they were catching up with her.
Bethany was done from the lavatory, so she decided to check up on her friend so that she could have a chit-chat with her.
Walking across the corridor, the lights went out due to the heavy thunder that had fallen from the rain outside, so Bethany falling into a state of fear, took out her phone in order to use her torchlight in lighting up the place as she went on with the song she was singing. The nurses were passing so were the patients and Bethany’s reflections went on Carl and mother who had just left the hospital.
