Chapter 10 Bringing Up The Past

Alicia:
The look on Logan’s face when I revealed that I may be interested in him was adorable to say the least. The smile on his face melted me in the spot and I needed to quickly grab my books from him and get to class before I jumped him right in the hallway.
I accidentally brushed his arm when I grabbed my books and sparks flew. I felt it, and I’m sure he felt it too. So in true Alicia fashion, I high tailed it out of there as soon as things got too hot.
I sat in my last class thinking about nothing but this date I’m about to go on. For God sakes Alicia it’s just coffee!! I yelled at myself in my head. Why was I so nervous.
Because he makes me nervous, because the things we end up doing makes me nervous, and because the things I want to do with him make me nervous. My mind was turning over and over again about the date, about what Sarah had said, about her touching his chest in the hallway (yes, I saw that). I just couldn’t concentrate on anything else.
The bell rang and I jumped in my seat. I felt like a fool for being startled. I stood up and began to gather my books, my eyes looked up at the door for a split second and saw a pair of dark blue eyes staring at me, waiting patiently.
My mouth gaped open and I stood frozen. Not sure how long I stood there for, but his expression changed to confusion and he began to narrow his eyes and slowly beckon me over with his index finger. I finally came back to my senses and finished grabbing my books and walked slowly to the door.
“And your standing outside the door to my Trig class why?” I asked trying to sound annoyed but I was really just anxious.
“So you can’t escape.” He winked and began walking with me down to my locker.
“I wouldn’t have tried to ditch you, I agreed to coffee didn’t I?”
“Yes, but you have a tendency to bolt whenever things get real.” He quipped.
I scrunched up my face at that to show my disapproval but didn’t say anything because unfortunately I knew he was right.
We got to my locker and I threw the books I didn’t need in there and put the books I needed in my bag to take home. While I was organizing my things, Logan was just silently watching me.
“Stop doing that Logan.” I gave a slight smile.
“What.” He smiled along with me.
“Stop staring at me, your making me nervous.” I said with a little laugh.
He averted his eyes across the hall, “I’m sorry, didn’t even realize I was doing it.” He began to fidget.
I put my hand on his stopping him from fidgeting any further and he instantly stopped.
“Stop fidgeting, really not a big deal, and I can’t believe a guy like you gets embarrassed.” I said shocked.
He grabbed the hand that was on his, and began rubbing his fingers back and forth on my palm. It felt sensational.
“What kind of guy is that?” He asked with his winning smile of seduction.
“There he is, thought I lost you for a second there.” I said sarcastically.
He gave a slight chuckle and let me have my hand back. “Ok, come on I want to take you to my favourite coffee shop just out of town.”
“Alright.” I smiled and closed my locker, just as I was going to turn around and follow him I noticed Sarah staring daggers at me down the hall. I shook my head and turned and follow Logan out of the school. She was not going to let this go too easy.
Logan:
I helped Alicia into my car and made my way around to the drivers side. Holy shit was I nervous. It’s beyond me how a tiny little thing like her could make me feel like a freshman going in for his first kiss.
Then again I have never actually officially taken anyone on a date before. I have had girlfriends of course, but usually I would just end up with them, none of them ever really wanted to be taken on a date, or asked for that sort of thing, just a bunch of make-out sessions and official boyfriend/girlfriend status at school. In a way, we were always just using each other.
But I can’t do that with Alicia. The only problem is I don’t have any experience in this area. I didn’t grow up in a conventional world, so I will have to figure it out on my own.
I’m taking her to my favourite place, Ruby’s Bistro just outside of town. My mother used to take me there before she had passed and it was just her and I, and I have never stopped going. I have never taken anyone there before and I’m not sure if she is going to like it so fingers crossed she does.
We pulled up and Alicia looked through the window and seemed memorized.
“Logan when you said go for coffee, I thought you meant like Starbucks. What is this place?” She asked with a smile.
“It’s by far my most favourite place in the world. It’s a Jazz Bistro my mother used to take me to when I was little. I thought you might appreciate it. It’s a little too early for the live bands but they are always playing some light Jazz in the background, and they serve coffee.” I finished with a shrug. “Come on.”
She shook her head and followed me in, I opened the door for her, she walked in and immediately started to scan the room checking out the decor.
“My God it’s like stepping back into the 1920’s.” She exclaimed with a grin on her face.
“Hey there Logan, you came here with a friend today.” The attendee, Charlie, stated while greeting us. “Same table?”
“Ah actually Charlie there’s no live bands yet, I think we will just take a booth if that’s ok.” I asked, hoping that Charlie wasn’t going to try and embarrass me. The servers here have known me for years and were like family.
“Sure Logan, no problem.” He said with a sly grin. “Follow me.” He bumped my shoulder while passing by giving me a wink in the process, which Alicia absolutely saw.
I shook my head in embarrassment and took Alicia’s hand and led her to the booth Charlie set us up in.
We sat across from each other and Alicia just stared at me while they served us our coffee. Like she was trying to figure me out.
“So, the people here know you well huh?”
“Ah, ya I’ve been coming here a long time.”
She shook her head at that. “With your mom?”
“Ya, a long time ago.”
“But she doesn’t come anymore?”
“No, no she died when I was twelve.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” She stopped asking questions because she knew she had hit a touchy subject. “Well it is beautiful here, she certainly had great taste.”
“Yes she did.” I said with a small smile.
She continued to drink her coffee and was silently swaying to the music in the background making me smile.
“What?” She asked suddenly stopping.
“What, nothing you just look so relaxed right now, I’ve never seen you that way before.” I said with my hands up in defence.
“Well I’m never really comfortable at school, or at parties, or anywhere really besides my room on my own.” She said with with a shrug.
I began playing with her fingers. “But you seem perfectly relaxed with me?” I observed while bringing her fingers up to my lips.
“Ya well, I suppose you have grown on me.” She said with a giggle and added. “Like a fungus.”
I chuckled at that. “I’ll take it.” I said with a grin.
“So tell me more about your family.” She said innocently.
“Ah, there’s really not much to say.” I attempted to avert the conversation.
“Ah come on Logan, any sisters, brothers, little more about your mom, your dad…”
At the mention of my father I saw red.
“I don’t want to talk about it!!” My voice raised when I really didn’t mean it to and I saw a light go out of Alicia’s eyes. I scared her and she removed her hand out of mine and grabbed onto her coffee and started sipping it slowly. Not looking at me.
“I’ll be right back, just going to get some air.” I mumbled retreating.
What an absolute jerk I was! She doesn’t know what she is asking when asking those questions and I laid into her, and now like an idiot I’m leaving her alone in the booth!
I just need to breath and calm down. I took a few deep breaths and my heart rate slowed back to normal. I went back to the booth completely under the impression that she was ready to end the date right then and there.
I sat down and like a dog getting in trouble I had a hard time looking up into her eyes.
“Logan.” She said while I was fiddling with my fingers at the table. “Logan can you look at me.” She pleaded.
I looked up thinking I was going to see anger, but I only saw a look of sadness.
“You don’t have to tell me anything.” She stated pursing her lips. “I shouldn’t have pushed, I was just curious about you, but you don’t have to tell me a thing. We really don’t know each other all that well, and I shouldn’t have intruded.”
“I shouldn’t have reacted that way I’m sorry, I’m not used to people asking me questions about my family and it just caught me off guard.” I went and retrieved her hand again. “I just really don’t like to talk about them.”
“Ok.” She said with a little bit of a half smile.
I could tell that she was still put off about what happened, and so was I.
I just don’t know if I can every bring myself to tell her…
