“No,” her mother screamed. “Honey, I beg you, can you not be so selfish? If you don’t think about yourself, think about Krista.”
“Don’t use Krista to press me. Krista is an honest and kind child. She is different from you. Also, listen carefully. Tomorrow morning, come to the Civil Affairs Bureau with the household registration book. I want to divorce you.” Dad left after he finished speaking.
My mother went around to him, knelt down with tears, and hugged his legs tightly with both hands. “Husband, don’t do this, I really have no way out. I beg you, help me.”
“Let go.”
“Brent recorded the video and said, if I can’t persuade you to honestly admit this accident, then he will tell the world that I cheated, and then people all over the world will call me an adulteress.” My mother screamed. “It doesn’t matter if I was scolded, after all, I really did something wrong, and I deserved it. But Krista is my daughter. Once I become the target of public criticism, you and Krista will be brought into trouble as well. Others will say that you are incompetent, so you are cuckolded. And Krista, once she does anything wrong, people will      backstab and say she is a fish that is beginning      to rot at the head. I know I did wrong, but Krista is innocent, hubby, hubby, help me. Just take the responsibility for this accident and take the money then leave. This kind of accident can’t always happen. It won’t only become your      responsibility. As time passes, people will forget all about it. It won’t have any influence on you or Krista. Please, is your dream of building a bridge more important than Krista, Samuel?”
Dad tore his lung shouting hard, “You did something wrong, why do you want me to wipe your ass? You have already slept with others, why should I make up for your mistakes?”
“Samuel,” my mother screamed, “I was wrong. I know I was wrong. I am willing to divorce you. But before that, promise me, please. Brent said, if you refuse, he will ruin Krista. Honey, we can’t fight Brent. You should save Krista, please, please.”
Dad took a step back, his face full of despair.
After five minutes, he said heavily, “This is the last time I will do something for you. In the future, take care of yourself. Remember, be kind to Krista. If you let my Krista suffer half a grievance, I will never spare you. I will not spare you even when I die, do you hear me?”
After saying this, he turned and left, disappearing into the video.
In the video, my mother stood in place for three minutes, then took out her mobile phone, dialed a number, and a smile was over her face.
“Brent, I have done my part. Yes, you are rest assured that it is over. No matter what happens, I will stand on your side. I know that in this life, I don’t want to be separated from you again. I just hope that you will not leave me in the long run, and I love you.”
Seeing this, I burst into tears. Dad knew what Mom had done. Dad compromised for me. Dad jumped off the bridge because of me.
Quincy sighed, “After your father left, I drove to find him, and he was alone, getting drunk. I told him that I knew everything, and I wanted to persuade him not to listen to those people and try to win opportunities for himself. But your father told me that he hoped I could forget about it. He said that he could be a bad father who made mistakes in his work, but he didn’t want his daughter to have a bad mother. He can give up the job he likes, but he can’t let his daughter be poked in the spine and called the daughter of an adulteress.”
“Oh, whoops… Dad.” When I heard this, I felt my heart stop, and I felt that I could not breathe. Dad died for me.
Quincy stood aside and patted me on the shoulder.
He returned to the safe, pulled it a few times, pulled out an old craft paper bag. He walked to the table, and put the craft paper bag in front of me. “I have something to do at the construction site. Take your time, go back by yourself, I won’t send you.”
I looked at the words’ The Cross River Bridge ‘on the brown paper bag, and my eyes widened.
Seeing Quincy open the door of the office, I quickly stood up and said, “Uncle Quincy.”
He looked back at me and said, “Is there anything else?”
I didn’t speak, just gave him a deep bow. He also did not speak and turned to leave. I was busy opening the file and saw the original file inside. I breathed a sigh of relief gently.
Evidence… I got it. Dad, I can finally do something for you. I pulled the USB flash drive out of the computer and quickly left Quincy’s office and went upstairs.
I hurried to Cheney’s office door. Gia saw me, she got up and said with a cold face, “Mrs. Fischer, you came at a bad time. Mr. Cheney is not here.”
I frowned. “Where did he go?”
“Well… I’m sorry, I have no comment, but      you can ask me to pass the message, under the orders of Mrs. Fischer, I can answer it.”
I gave her a cold look. “No, I’ll contact him myself.”
After I had said that, I turned and left. Gia said, “Mrs. Fischer, he went to the hospital.”
I looked back with some worry on my face. “What did he go to the hospital for? Is something wrong with him?”
Gia hooked her lips. “Mr. Fischer didn’t have an accident, but he goes to the hospital on the 10th of every month to visit an old friend. This habit has been adhered to for many years.”
I was relieved, ignored Gia and left directly.
After leaving the company, I got into the taxi and called Cheney. But Cheney didn’t answer.
More than ten minutes later, when I approached the Fischer’s mansion, my cell phone rang and it was Cheney.
I picked up my phone and said, “Cheney, I have good news for you.”
“Go ahead.” His voice was so soft that there seemed to be someone beside him.
“Are you busy?”
“Just say it.”
“I have got the evidence, and I can      exculpate my father.”
“Really? That’s really good news. Do you want to celebrate tonight?”
I shook my head. “I can’t tonight. I want to strike while the iron is hot. Tonight, I have to do a big thing. Can you accompany me?”
“Do what?”
I smiled. “Go and cut off the enemy’s right-hand man. I’ll see you this afternoon.”
He chuckled on the phone. “Okay, see you.”
Back at the Fischer’s mansion, I hid all the papers before I called Echo and arranged for the evening.
At five o’clock in the afternoon, I drove to the door of the Brennan group and looked up at the tall building with a touch of hope in my eyes. Brent, you wait for me for a month at most, and I want your Brennan group to disappear completely from this city.
Brent most likely did not anticipate the debt left six years ago being gradually recovered by the deceased’s daughter six years later.
Heaven is good for reincarnation! It’s time for these evildoers to pay for their evil deeds.
I started the car and left. I came to the door of the Fischer group and called Cheney. He came downstairs and went straight into my car.
On the way, I told Cheney what I wanted to do.
Arriving at the Lotus Club, I took Cheney to the private room I booked for the afternoon. After we sat for nearly five minutes, Echo arrived. When she saw me, Echo waved to me very close. “Hi, dear.”
I laughed, “Come and sit down.”
Echo sat down and nodded to the serious-looking Cheney next to me. “Good evening, Cheney.”
Cheney nodded to her, and Echo nodded too, without saying anything.
Not sooner had Echo sat down, there was a knock at the door. I said, “Please come in.”
