CHAPTER 8

Book:The Spell Published:2024-5-1

With each passing day, me and Zane grew more closer. We would go to college together, sit together in class, have lunch together and sometimes would go out for a movie. After meeting him, I started living my life, I was happy. I used to feel lonely ever since Elena left the town for higher studies but not anymore. The killings didn’t stop. On every third day there were headlines of someone’s death but these things don’t scare or worry me anymore. Maybe, somewhere, I too have believed that the animal is erasing his hunger and might leave this town soon. With Zane by my side I felt alive. I’ve found a good friend in him but there was something mysterious about him. Sometimes he talked strangely like he’s from a different time, an anachronism that has survived the passing years.
TRING … TRING …
I looked at the clock and it read 12 am then I picked up my phone to check who it was to call me at this hour. A smile automatically placed on my lips when I read the name – Elena. Whenever I think about her, she hits me up with a call or a message.
“Hello… Been so long since you called me. I thought you forgot” I teased.
“Yeah right. Besides you’re too busy with the new guy that you don’t even have time to call me right?” she said and we both laughed.
“I miss you” said
“Really? Doesn’t seems like”
“Stop pulling my leg”
“Okay okay” she said laughing.
“When are you coming back?” I asked impatiently. Although I’m enjoying Zane’s company, I miss my best friend and all the fun we used to have.
“Will be seeing you soon” she replied.
“How long will your ‘SOON’ take Elena? I’m hearing this since past three months” I said sadly and irritated by her ‘soon’
“Aww, don’t be sad. I’ll be there soon. Very soon. Promise” she said.
“Okay. Know that I’m impatiently waiting for your arrival. Don’t make me wait for too long”
“Sure dear. Now go to sleep. Will talk to you tomorrow. Good Night”
“Night” and then we hunged up the call.
The next morning I woke up with a smile on my face.
I had to go to the college alone today because Zane was busy with some of his work. He said he had some work to finish and I didn’t ask what.
I was bored throughout the day without Zane but the good thing was that, that there was just one class remaining to attend as the another lecture was called off. It was lunch time and there was still twenty minutes left for the class to start and full one hour left for the college to finish. I can’t bear this boredom anymore. I sat on the bench in the campus with my coffee.
“Ooppss… stop day dreaming you silly girl” Marcus said with his evil smile.
“Why can’t you leave me alone Marcus?” I said irritated as he had spilled whole coffee on my dress by his intentional push.
“I’m noticing… that you are spending a lot of time with that new guy in the college” he said.
“What’s your problem? You are no one to ask anything to me” I snapped at him.
“Whoa… Calm down girl. I’m just saying, everywhere you go, he follows and everywhere he goes, you follow. You two are always found together. What’s cooking huh?”
“Whatever it is, it’s none of your business!” I said and walked ahead to avoid him but felt a hard and violent push on my back which made me fell hard on ground hurting my knees. My skin was torn and wrist and knees were bleeding. Tears gathered around my eyes and Marcus’s laughter was salt on my wounds. I couldn’t move because of the pain. My knees and wrist were burning.
“AAAAA” I heard someone scream followed by a great thud. My vision was blurred because of the tears but it seemed like someone had fallen hard.
“How dare you hurt her” said the angry voice. I quickly wiped away my tears when I recognized the voice. It was Zane. By the time I could pick myself up, Marcus was already lying on the ground and Zane was throwing punches at him. He was punching him so hard and his punches were so rapid that Marcus was falling short of breath.
“Zane stop!” I shouted but he didn’t stop. All Zane could see was Marcus and all his brain was commanding him was to punch him hard. I have never seen Zane so angry.
“Zane stop he’ll die” I caught his hand as he was about to throw another punch at Marcus.
“Zane please stop. I forgave him” I tried to appease him but he was still furious. He was so furious that he was looking like an angry lion right now. He was still giving death glares to Marcus who was lying on the ground in pain, struggling for breath. The grimace could clearly be seen on his face. If he made even the slightest of movement, Zane would hit him again.
“Zane let’s go” I pulled him away from the sight. We halted at the men’s room on the ground floor and I asked him to splash some water on his face. Cold water might help calm his anger. I waited outside the men’s room for his return. I hope Zane doesn’t get into any kind of trouble because of this. I’m afraid principal might expell him from the college if he finds out about this. It’s all because of me. I put myself into trouble and I put people around me into trouble. I’m such a mess. This is why nobody wants to be friends with me.
“Tears don’t suite you” I realized it lately that I was crying, only when Zane wiped the tears away from my cheeks.
“I’m sorry… I… I’ve put you in trouble” I said without looking at him.
“what kind of trouble Blaire?”
“Principal might expell you from the college because of this fight…. Because of me” he placed his fingers on my chin and made me look at him.
“Nothing will happen” he assured. How can a person who was so livid few moments ago be so calm quickly?
“Trust me” he said and I responded with a nod.
