Chapter 5

Book:What Lies Beneath Published:2024-5-1

It was no new fact that Lisa heard things at night. Even while she was staying with her family, she heard things so when she started hearing things in school at night, she ignore it because it was normal to her and she did not want to think more about it giving it more meaning but this particular night, she was unable to ignore the sound.

Lisa woke up to the sound of a female crying. She tried ignoring it but the crying only increased. She stood up from her bed and looked round her room wondering if perhaps her roommates had heard the voice but they were both deeply asleep.

She moved quietly lighting a torch and searched around the room but could not find anybody which meant the voice was not coming from her room. Maybe someone else’s room she thought to herself.

The roommates of the person would help her she thought as she went back to sleep but she was unable to. The crying increased and this time it was as if the person was right next to her.

Lisa stood up again and was about to wake Becca or Sarah when she saw someone at the corner of her room crouched down very close to the door.

She thought she had seen wrongly like that day at the toilet and tried to clean her eyes but the person was still there.
It was a little girl of about five. She had her head buried between her legs as she kept on crying.

Lisa turned to where her roommates we’re still soundly asleep. She wondered if she would be able to move quickly in order to wake them up.

There were two bunk beds in their room. Becca and Sarah were on one bunk while she was in the other opposite them. There was an extra bed in the room but she had not met any other person apart from her present roommates.

Lisa walked towards the other end of the room to wake her roommates but she was unable to. The girl’s sobbing increased. It was as if the sobbing was a weapon.

Lisa was unable to take a step more as the sobbing sent a sharp pain in her ears.

“Help me.” The girl said.

Lisa was dumbfounded. Did the little girl really think she was just going to help her like that without getting back up? She thought to herself with a scoff.

But Lisa’s legs had a different mission. She started moving towards the girl unable to stop herself and asked the little girl a question she had no intention of asking.

“Are you okay?” She asked the girl.

The girl shook her head but still did not raise it up to look at Lisa. Lisa thought it was time to go back to bed. She never wanted to do anything like this. She did not even want to talk to the girl.

“Do you need help or something?” She asked the girl.

‘No!!’ Lisa screamed within herself. She wondered what was happening. Everything happening was like a movie she never wanted to act in.

The girl raised her head and gave Lisa a smile that would haunt her for days. The girl had no teeth and her face was that of an old lady.

“You.” She said to Lisa as she jumped on her.

Lisa let out a loud scream. She was going to die she thought to herself with a son.

“Lisa wake up.” She heard someone say to her as they shook her on the bed.

She opened her eyes immediately and stared into familiar blue eyes.
“Are you okay?” Sarah asked her.

“I had a dream.” She said with a sob.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Sarah asked her but she shook her head and just stayed in the embrace of Sarah. It was comforting.

Lisa did not know how long she stayed in Sarah’s embrace when Becca entered the room.

“Am I missing something?” Becca asked as she stepped into the room.

“Bad dream.” Sarah replied her as she stroke Lisa’s hair. Lisa found the gesture soothing and it wasn’t long before she went back to sleep.

Sarah placed Lisa gently on the bed and adjusted her blanket. Hearing Lisa’s screams had scared her out of her wits. At first, she was at a loss on what was to be done but later moved her ass to Lisa’s bed.

“Where have you been?” She asked Becca who was now climbing until her bed.

“Sasha’s room.” Becca replied as Sarah just stared at her.

“Why wouldn’t you listen to me? She’s not a good fit for you.” Sarah said to her friend.

Sasha was the person Becca had a crush on. She had confessed to her and found out that Sasha also had a thing for her.

“And who do you suggest is a good fit for me then, Jesse?” Becca asked Sarah referring to one of their male friends who always wanted to get in Becca’s pants even though it was clear she didn’t swing that way.

“I’m not saying you should settle for Jesse or any other person that’s not your type but seriously, Sasha does not suit you.” Sarah said with a sigh.

“Get off my back okay. I like her she likes me it’s simple. There’s nothing like a good fit here. Not everyone can be like you and Jacob.” Becca said annoyingly as she went to bed making sure her blanket covered every part of her body up to her ears.

Sarah stood there staring at her friend. She was sure Becca was making a huge mistake but now that she thought about it, who was she to correct someone’s mistake. She had also made a mistake when she suggested she and her twin brother come to this school.

Her brother who was like her second half and also Jacob’s best friend was missing and they had no clue on how to find him.
Nobody knew but the absence of her brother had put a bit of a strain on her relationship with Jacob. She blamed herself for suggesting they come to this school. It wasn’t at all like what one saw on the outside.

Sarah climbed her bed and went to sleep hoping that by morning she and Becca would be back to normal. And maybe just maybe by luck, they would be able to find a clue concerning the whereabouts of her brother.
