Chapter 4

Book:What Lies Beneath Published:2024-5-1

It wasn’t long before Lisa found out that her new roommate and friend loved to talk. Sarah was not Lisa’s only roommate. There was another girl whom she met called Rebecca.

“Don’t tell Rebecca but she snores like a pig.” Sarah had said to Lisa before she and Rebecca were introduced to each other.
“I shouldn’t tell her?” Lisa asked.

“Yup. Becca doesn’t really like it and feels guilty about it but since she loves me so much I’m free to bitch about it.” Sarah had said to her.

Lisa was about to say something but she had kept quiet. Immediately she met Rebecca she decided she liked her.
“I know Sarah has already told you but I snore so I’m apologizing to you in advance.” Rebecca had said to Lisa.

Lisa smiled and shook her hand. Becca, which Rebecca had insisted Lisa call her and Sarah had helped her arrange her things. Lisa did not know when Jacob had left. She was too much enjoying the company of her friends to even care.
She found out later that she was in the same class with the girls. Lisa hoped that they would stay friends for as long as they could. It was nice being around the girls.

It was a break time from classes for them and they were lounging around. Lisa had been included in their circle of friends which included Jacob, two boys she was still not acquinted with, Sarah and Becca.

“I don’t like her though.” Sarah was saying to Becca who was looking at her crush.

“I don’t like Jacob too.” Becca said.

“Did I do something wrong?” Jacob asked her.

“Of course you didn’t. I hate your girlfriend.” Becca said to him as she glared at Sarah who chuckled.

“Make up your mind Becca. Do you hate him or me?” Sarah asked her as she chuckled again.

Becca rolled her eyes and ignored the question. “I’m going to ask her out.” She said.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Sarah said to her.

“You don’t think me asking anybody out is a good idea.” Becca said back to Sarah with an eyeroll.

“Of course I don’t. Take a look at her.” Sarah said to her but she ignored her.

“You know what, let’s ask Lisa.” Sarah said which made Lisa raise her head from the novel she was reading.

“Ask me what?” She asked Sarah.

“If that person” Sarah said pointing at the girl “is a good fit for Becca.”

“Babe stop pointing. She’ll know you are talking about her.” Jacob said to her.

“I wasn’t trying to hide it.” She replied him.

Lisa turned to look at the girl Sarah had pointed. She had black hair and really pale skin. She was beautiful but there was something about her that did not sit well with Lisa although she could not figure it out.

Lisa turned to look at Becca. She was black and had really nice curves. Her black hair framed her face very well and her eyes were full of life.

“She’s pale.” Lisa said to Sarah who rolled her eyes.

“We know she is. I just want to know if she is a good fit for our friend here.” Sarah said to Lisa.

“I can’t really say since I don’t know her.” Lisa said to them.

“So what you’re saying is that Becca should nt ask her out until we give her our stamp of approval right?” Sarah asked.

Lisa was about to reply but Becca beat her to it.
“What she’s trying to say is that I should try to get to know her first. Right Lisa?” Becca asked her.

The truth was that Lisa was with Sarah on this but she felt she was not in any position to get in the way of potential lovers. What if she said something and at the end the girl was Lisa’s soulmate.

“I need to go to the toilet.” Lisa said as she made an escape making her way to the toilet.

“A girl after my heart. She doesn’t want to get in between you guys.” One of the guys who were with them said with a laugh.

“You can give up on the girl and come with me Becca. I will treat you well.” The other boy said to Becca but she just flipped him off.

“I’m trying this.” Becca said as she made her way to the girl.

Something at the back of Lisa’s mind knew it was a bad idea but she was reluctant in telling Becca. If at all she was right then Becca would notice the girl was not a right fit for her sooner or later.

Lisa was done using the toilet and went to wash her hands at the sink. There were mirrors lined up next to where the sink was. Two rows of sinks were opposite each other.

She was washing her hands when a female came out of one of the toilets and went to the other rows opposite hers to wash her hands. Lisa wondered when the girl had entered the toilet. She was sure she had not heard any sound of anyone entering the toilet but it could be that she missed it.

Lisa bent down to wash her face and as she faced the mirror she saw someone with an axe on her head. The person was wearing a white dress like the one she had seen on the girl at the party. Lisa rubbed her eyes and the person at the mirror was the student she had seen coming out of the toilet.

What was that? She asked herself. Maybe she really needed to see a doctor like her stepmother had suggested because she could not believe she was seeing things.

The student smiled at Lisa as she made her way out of the toilet. Lisa thought she had seen something beneath the smile. The smile held promise and something in her gut was telling her it was not a good promise.

Lisa cleaned her hands and hurried out of the toilet although her mission was incomplete. At the entrance of the toilet was a boy wearing their school uniform but he wasn’t quite real. He was floating in air.

Lisa was not in the mood for something like this again and she tried to ignore him but the boy was not having it.
“You can see me right?” He asked her but she ignored him.

“If you plan on ignoring me I promise I will make your life a living hell and to be sincere I have been given a certificate in being annoying.” He said but Lisa ignored him as she went out of the toilet.

Just keep walking. He would let you be soon enough she said to herself but two days later and the boy was still hovering around her. He had succeeded in making her life hell for the past two days.

He flipped her off from her bed anytime she tried to sleep at night. She did not know how he did it. One time she had woken up in the middle of the dorm. Every student opening their room door had seen her sleeping outside.

She was walking down the hallway another time when he flipped her skirt and even if he later apologized she still remembered what he and said.
“Your undies are sexy.” He had said to her with a low whistle.

Lisa had finally had enough of him. She wanted a peaceful school life not one where a boy she suspected was a ghost was trying to make her miserable.

“What do you want from me?” She asked him when she made sure he was alone.

“Oh my God. You can see me.” He said with a smile that made Lisa’s stomach ahve a funny feeling. She could not deny that the boy was attractive. He had blonde hair that was stylishly messy.

“I thought you knew I could see you.” Lisa said to him in surprise.

“I wasn’t really sure you could see me.” He said to her.

“So what was all that for?” She asked him.

“All what?” He asked her sounding confused.

“The tripping, flipping my skirt, the issue with the bed?” She asked him.

“Oh that. I was bored.” He said with a shrug.

“You were bored? You apologized.” She said to him.

“Of course I did. My mother raised me to be a gentleman.”

“What are you?” Lisa asked him.

“I don’t know. I’m thinking maybe I’m a ghost?” He said to her looking really confused.

“You think?”

“Yup.”

“So you’re dead?”

“Not really. I don’t feel like I’m dead.”

“But you have all the attributes and characteristics of a ghost.” She said to him.

“That’s the thing. I’m supposed to know when I die. I should remember it but I don’t.”

“Who ever said you were supposed to remember how you died.” Lisa asked him incredulously.

“We’re not?” He asked her.

Lisa thought of it for a second. She really didn’t know if someone who was dead was supposed to remember how he had died.
“I don’t know.” She said to him with a sigh.

“I like you. What’s your name?” He said to Lisa with that smile that sent butterflies swirling in the out of her stomach.

“Melissa.” She said to him.

She hardly told anyone her full name. It was something precious her mother had called her. She did not want anybody to taint it more than her father had done but she had told a stranger not to mention a ghost her full name.

“Melissa.” He said the name like he was tasting a new recipe. It was delicate and Lisa concluded she liked hearing him say her name. The deep tenir of his voice was like a caress to her.

“I’m Luke.” He said to her as he extended his hand for a shake but thought better of it seeing as he was a bit see through and Lisa’s hand will just go through.

“So what’s your story Luke?” Lisa said to him as she sat on the grass.

“Where should I start?” He asked her.

“Anywhere.”

“Okay, I am a prince, second in line to the kingdom of ……”

“Don’t joke with me.” Lisa said to him as he chuckled.

She wanted to know more about him but the bell ring signaling the end of their break. Her friends were going to ask her where she had been and she wondered what she was going to tell them. Not everyone would believe that she had met a ghost and she really did not want to destroy what she had with them.
