Kade
My thundering footsteps sent all creatures, great and small, to their hiding places. Pups cowered in fear at the roar of my voice, almost seeking refuge in the high walls as I walked past them, proceeding into my office.
I couldn’t keep calm, anxiety got the best of me as many thoughts flooded my mind. My last response triggered his anger and I couldn’t help but think of what would be in the letter.
Only the darkest and cruelest words, filled with empty threats.
But I was prepared for it. I was ready for anything.
I was born ready.
“Alpha, what if it is a bomb letter?” Silvius broke the deafening silence that enveloped the room.
A smirk played on my lips, “Then we will die together,” My eyes fell on his troubled countenance, “Isn’t that what you’ve always wished for as a child? To die with me, your Alpha,”
“Should I get it for you instead?” His deep voice quivered, weakened with worry and fear as he proceeded to my table, where the letter laid.
I shook my head negatively, “No, Silvius. It is not your fight,” I placed my hand on his shoulder, restraining him from going further.
A sigh escaped Silvius’ lips, “Whatever. Just be careful, okay?” He patted my shoulder before his hand fell on mine, giving it a gentle squeeze.
I snatched my hand from his, furrowing my brows, confused at his sudden display of kindness, “Since when do you care?”
“Stop acting like I don’t care about you,” He pouted his lips, making him appear dangerously cute.
“Stop it, it sucks,”
“I just want to read the letter, I am not dying,”
With light steps, I trod quietly to my table as if trying not to wake the letter. Before me was a disorganized table with files, stamps, pens and a MacBook that I had scattered in anger. But that wasn’t important.
Only the letter was on my mind.
My curious eyes landed on a brown envelope that laid on the edge of my table. With steady hands, I caressed the letter to be sure it was free from any foreign elements. Satisfied by my investigation, I proceeded to open it.
“Alpha!” Silvius’ worrisome voice rang in my ears, making me flinch.
“Stop it, Silvius, It is just a letter!” I yelled using my Alpha tone to declare seriousness. Guilt flooded me for yelling at him knowing he was looking after me, but I turned ignorant.
My arrogance got the best of me and I wasn’t going to apologize.
I knew he cared about me and wouldn’t want even a hair on my head to get hurt, but his sudden act of kindness disgusted me.
I wasn’t used to it.
I dipped my large hands into the envelope and caught a piece of paper. Unfolding it, I squinted my eyes to be able to read the tiny scribbles marred on it.
‘Remember how you begged for death? Remember how your beloved sister howled like a bitch when I ripped her into pieces? That was just a tip of an iceberg, I still have plans for you, Kade. You just woke the monster in me, killing him was the last thing you should have done.
This is just the beginning.
Congratulations on finding your mate.’
I expected to be infuriated by his words and to reciprocate furiously, but I remained calm.
Dangerously calm.
How dare he?
How dare he brag about causing me pain?
How dare he bring my mate into this?
How did he know I had found my mate?
I knew he would use Esmeralda as bait to get me.
He would cause her pain and torture her.
Fuck!
I backed Silvius at once, taking sharp breaths to calm my nerves.
I didn’t want my face to betray any emotion.
Impatiently, I scattered my table, searching frantically for my cigar. The only thing that could bring relaxation to my troubled soul.
I snatched the cigar from my table, lighting it evenly, before watching its flavour spread throughout the room. A gush of pleasure washed through me as I inhaled its flavour.
Satisfying.
Placing its round edge between my lips, I took a long-satisfying drag, allowing myself to get lost in the wild excitement that filled my inside, erasing even the tiniest trace of anger that had been built in me.
“I guess it wasn’t a good one,” Silvius’ deep voice broke my euphoria.
“Something like that,” I replied, folding the piece of paper back into the envelope. Allowing Silvius to know I had a mate was the last thing I wanted.
“In that case, we will kill the messenger of the bad news,”
“Not yet. Keep him alive. Barely alive,” I said, dismissing Silvius. I wanted to be left alone. I wanted to think.
“Alpha?” Silvius stopped in his tracks, turning toward my direction, “Something is not right. I can feel it in my guts,”
“What?” I puffed out smoke slowly before giving him my attention.
“It’s the house. The house is strange. The morning I saw you lying on the floor, I felt not one, but two souls in the house. I think someone broke in. People broke into the house and they are spys,”
“Okay,” I replied coldly, diverting my attention to the letter.
“Okay? That’s what you will say?” Silvius stared at me in disbelief, “Someone broke into your house and all you said was okay? Is there something you are not telling me?” Silvius’ curious eyes pinned me, searching for answers.
“There is no one in the house. Happy now?”
“You can’t tell me that. I can smell them and one of them has a smell that keeps agonizing my wolf. If you can’t look into it, I will,” He stated before heading toward the door.
My heart thumped loudly in my chest as Silvius placed his hand on the doorknob.
He will find out about Esmeralda and the witch which was the last thing I wanted.
How could I tell him that my mate was an Omega? And her best friend was a witch?
Relief washed through me as Dora walked in, stopping Silvius from going further.
“Alpha,” She bowed in submission briefly before giving me the sweetest smile, “I heard your voice. How are you feeling?”
“I’m good,” I replied with my words short and clipped.
“I am happy to hear that. What should I get for you? Should I get you juice or…”
“Water, just get him water,” Silvius interrupted, placing a paper bag full of medication on my table, “We are not done with this conversation,” He whispered slowly into my ears before walking away.
Silvius was a hard nut to crack and convincing him was impossible. Just like me.
I knew It was a matter of time before he found out about Esmeralda.
Fuck! I needed to do something.
“Water it is then,” Dora flashed a smile as she made her way out of my office.
Trails of jasmine and vanilla wrafted my nose lightly before they assaulted me, sending my wolf into a state of frenzy, I was sure the others smelt it too, making them freeze in a spot. Using my wolf’s hearing, curious steps echoed throughout the hallway in search of something.
What could it be?
Who could be walking?
My heart skipped two beats as the doorknob twisted slowly to reveal Esmeralda standing by the door with her eyes almost popping out of their sockets.
“Spy!” Silvius growled before charging at Esmeralda, slamming her back against the wall as his claws dug into her flesh, staining the dark floor with the drops of her blood.
