Esmeralda
For the first time in my life, I experienced heartbreak. This was not the regular heartbreak I was used to, this heartbreak was different.
The heartbreak from a loved one. My mate.
The heartbreak from a loved one is the most painful heartbreak ever. It comes from within, shattering the heart into a thousand pieces, crushing the soul and leaving one vulnerable.
My heart was shattered.
I was broken.
I was vulnerable.
My hopes of becoming Luna were dashed.
No amount of consolation from Selene made me feel better. Nothing could stop my aching heart.
Why was the Moon goddess cruel to me?
Why did she pair me with someone that made me feel insignificant?!
She could have just made me mateless, rather than making me go through much pain.
“… you should not be seen or heard, you should be kept hidden and no one must know your identity,”
His words made me wail louder, not caring if anyone heard my voice.
He should have rejected me when he had the chance to. I would have understood.
But he didn’t. He brought me to his Pack, to make me a prisoner again. Hijacking my freedom of speech. Restricting my movement and concealing my identity.
Why wouldn’t he want me to talk to anyone, Including his Beta? Betas are supposed to be your closest partner and second in command.
What is in the North wing that I couldn’t see? Maybe skeletons in his cupboard.
Why doesn’t he want me to tell anyone that I was his mate, his Luna? I was an Omega.
What the fuck does he mean by doing my job?
I was his mate, not some worker. He won’t dare turn me into a worker.
The thought of another girl filling my place while I was made irrelevant made me cringe in jealousy. He dared not replace me. As much as I tried to shove the thought away, it still lingered in my mind, awakening my insecurities.
Why does he make me feel worthless?
It is not a crime to be an Omega. I had my own feelings too.
When I thought I was free from a cell, I was welcomed to another cell.
“Crying won’t solve anything, Esme,” Selene whispered in my ears, her hands running through my back, petting me.
“Don’t tell me that,” I flared, throwing my hands in the air, “You don’t know what he told me,”
“Even if I didn’t know what he told you, crying is not the solution,” Selene tried to convince me, but I was not ready to listen. I was covered in pain.
I pushed her arm off my shoulder, moving away from her, “Just leave me alone,”
“I can’t leave you alone in this state, you could hurt yourself,”
“Then let me die,” I burst into another round of tears, “The pain would stop that way,”
“Stop it! Don’t talk like that,” Selene engulfed me in a warm embrace, running her hands through my hair, “It will be alright, I know that. He would come around,”
With the disgusted look on his face, I don’t think he would come around any time.
“Break the rules and you’ll be sorry,” His words were coated in pure hatred, blinding my eyes with tears and urging my legs to flee from his sight. To anywhere, away from him.
I dashed away from him, trusting my legs as they led me to a huge door. Without thinking twice, I flung the door open, crashing onto the cold dark floor that accommodate me.
Almost giving in to the urge that made me want to break my first rule, daring to see what he would do to me if I trespass into the North wing. But I waved off the feeling, afraid of what would become of me if I pushed my limits, knowing Alpha Kade doesn’t make empty threats.
I curled up in a ball, resting my aching back on the wall as a huge bed beckoned to me, to lay my exhausted bones on it. But I remained on the cold floor, not used to a luxurious lifestyle.
A pang of guilt hit me as I shut Selene out, alone in my world, wallowing in self-pity. Soon, I succumbed to sleep, releasing myself in its embrace.
The dark room reminded me of my past and at once, I found myself in my mother’s house.
I was awoken by a strange sound. An angry voice followed by a cry.
Why does it sound so familiar?
Tiptoeing out of my room in an attempt to find the source of the cry, I walked past many rooms, straining my ear. Except I didn’t need to strain my ear as my sense of hearing was stronger than an average human.
Strange.
As I grew older, I noticed some changes in my body. Different from a human, like, heightened sense of smell, heightened sense of hearing and strength
I once concluded that I was going crazy when I heard a voice in my head. It spoke once, for a few seconds, before it got silenced. Never to be heard again.
I found myself before the door of the restroom where the sobs were louder. Carefully opening the door, I gasped in shock the moment I found my mother on the floor, wailing like a baby.
“Mum,” I screamed, running to her, engulfing her in an embrace. Fear and confusion washed through me as I locked gaze with my mother’s swollen face.
My mother was a happy soul who didn’t let anything get to her, but what could be breaking her heart, causing her to weep?
“What is it, mum?” I shook her, demanding an answer as her prolonged silence increased my temper.
“Why are you crying?”
“Oh dear,” She hugged my teenage frame, breaking into another round of tears, ignoring my question.
“Mum! What is the matter?” I yelled, regretting immediately for raising my voice at my mother. I also noticed that I get pissed easily.
What the fuck is wrong with me.
“It’s your father. Your father…” She stopped, bursting into tears and staining my face with tears as her hands cupped my face.
I furrowed my brows, “My father? What did he do? I thought you said you lost contact with him years ago and both of you ended things,”
“I know I said that but he called this week. I have been hiding it from you,”
“He called,” I repeated slowly. That was the reason her mood changed this week.
“What did he tell you?”
“He said that he wants you to live with him. I fought tooth and nail with him, but he said he wants to take custody of you since I hid you away from him for many years,” Her voice cracked and her head found its way to my shoulder.
“What did you tell him? And what do you want to do?”
“Baby,” She raised her head to meet my gaze, “I want you to understand that I don’t mean to give you away, but there is nothing I can do. Even if I file a lawsuit, I will lose this case,”
Blood drained from my face and my shoulder slumped in realization, “So I won’t celebrate my nineteenth birthday with you?”
“You can come around anytime, you know that it would be a pleasure to celebrate with you. It’s just that you won’t live with me anymore,”
My world came crashing as my mum’s words resonated in my ears.
I won’t live with her anymore.
I had spent eighteen years living with my mum and the thought of a stranger breaking our bond made my blood boil.
With the heaviest heart, I walked to my room, leaving my mum.
“Don’t think like that baby, I love you. Please don’t hate me, you know how I would love to be with you, but I am helpless,”
“Come back, honey,” She cried, beckoning unto me but I ignored her, walking away and never looking back till I got to my room.
The thought of living with my estranged father left me with mixed feelings.
For the first time in my life, I was going to experience fatherly love.
But the thought of leaving my mum saddened me.
What if he didn’t like me?
What if he had a family?
What if I don’t get along with anybody?
So many what ifs.
All my life, I had secretly craved for my father’s attention, hoping he would accept me one day. And this was a golden opportunity.
But why did I feel reluctant to meet him?
Little did I know that becoming a part of my father’s life was the beginning of the horrors of my life.
