Chapter 7 Mates

Book:The Last Luna Published:2024-5-1

Dylan’s POV
I remained on my bed, couldn’t stop smiling. She had to go since my dad was back.
“What do you think about Avery?” I asked my wolf.
“She’s awesome”
“Do you think she’s my mate?”
“I hope… She’ll make a great Luna”
“She’ll make a great life partner”
“What do you think would happen on her sixteenth birthday?”
I ignored the question then got up and stretched.
It’s still early… I should take Avery out.
“Steal a kiss or two while you at it”
“Will do” I smirked then bounced outta my room.
Followed her scent and it led me to the kitchen.
She was checking the fridge.
“Hungry?” I asked.
She shook a little then turned “Very” she had this weird look in her face. I always found it funny, the stupid faces she makes when she’s hungry.
She closed the fridge then brought out some tomatoes.
“Planning on cooking?” I rose an eyebrow.
“No… of course not… I just brought these out to admire the color” she rolled her eyes with her voice downing in sarcasm.
I rolled mine then walked up to her.
”Wanna help?” She smiled.
“Nah…” I sighed “Let’s eat out instead” I put on a hopeful grin.
“I think I prefer eating home cooked meals”
“Please” I held her hand “Please…” I repeated, I just had this urge to leave the house. It wasn’t just Avery. Something else was pushing me.
She starred at our hands. I tightened then.
”Uhh…” She smiled, considering.
“Okay” she finally agreed.
My smile grew.
I pulled her out of the house to the car.
“I don’t think I’m well dressed” she looked at herself.
“True though…” I glanced at her “You look too sexy in that shirt.” I looked forward then started the car.
I could feel her eyes on me.
“What?” I smirked.
“It’s… Nothing” she smiled.
“Okay… So we’re heading for the mall to get you new clothes”
“Cool…” She turned her attention to something else.
Twenty mintues passed and she had said nothing… This is so unlike her.
I could tell by her facial expression that something was bothering her.
“What’s wrong?” I asked without looking at her.
She’s never quiet… Especially not in a car.
“Nothing” she shrugged.
“Are you actually tryna lie?”
She sighed “When you find your mate…” She trailed.
“Don’t think too much about that” I sighed.
She didn’t drag the topic but I knew it was still bothering her. I found it annoying how she had doubts of her being my mate.
I pulled over at the mall, we were at our destination.
I sighed, opening the cars door and hopping out. She followed at a slower pace. She had bad energy flowing through her but hopefully, the mall would distract her a bit.
We were now in the mall, none of us had said a word.
“Let’s go to the make up session.” I said, breaking the silence.
I dunno why… but I feel we’re meant to be there.
“I don’t wear make up” she shrugged.
“Well you should try it” I shrugged.
She frowned.
Didn’t come out well.
I ignored that and pulled her to the make up session.
As soon as we got there, the sweetest smell hit me… It’s not something I can describe.
I took a sudden stop when I felt my wolf trying to take over.
I groaned at his annoying behavior.
“The fuck you doin”
“Mate?” My wolf whispered.
I wasn’t too shocked… Kinda saw it coming when I got the scent.
I started panicking internally when I figured Avery was with me. I wasn’t excited at the slightest about meeting my mate. I didn’t even consider her a mate if it’s not Avery.
“Let’s get out of here” I quickly said, grabbing her hand attempting to pull her out with me but she didn’t move. I turned to her, she had her brows furrowed.
“We just got here” she pouted.
“Am I meant to be happy about this?” My wolf questioned itself.
“Avery. We’ve gotta g-”
“MATE?!” someone screamed.
Oh no
She ran to me, arms wide open for a hug.
I frowned at the sight of her, struggling to hold back a growl.
I knew her.
Tessa
She didn’t seem to notice the unwelcoming glare I sent to her.
Her smile was still glued to her face.
“I should give you guys some space” I froze, hearing Avery’s shakey voice. My heart heat hard against my chest.
Wow… great… Meeting my mate the day I finally confess my feelings.
I held her… I cant let a little mate mistake ruin what I just started building with Avery. This meant everything to me.
“I, Dylan Arthur, rejects-” I started my sentence but couldn’t end it. Avery’s hand had my mouth covered within seconds. I frowned, throwing glares at Avery.
What does she think she’s doing?!
“What the fuck are you doing?!” Avery whisper-yelled.
“You were about to r-reject me?” I got irritated hearing Tessa’s stuttering voice.
I nodded, insensitively. Throwing my eyes at her.
I never really liked that girl… She’s trouble and I know.
You show up when I find out Avery feels the same and expect me to be glad?
No
Even though it wasn’t your choice.
It’s still a no.
“Stop being so self centered Dylan. Do you know the effect of rejection?” Avery let go of my mouth.
C’mon. Don’t start this Avery.
I groaned, knowing Avery wouldn’t let me do this… Especially not to Tessa.
“Let’s find out” I turned to Tessa, wanting to use the chance to reject her.
“I should… go” Tessa quickly said then took steps back till she turned and ran off covering her face while crying loudly
I watched her leave.
Are you serious?.. that’s my mate? That?!
I watched her run off with a feeling of hatred and attraction building up in me. The mate bond was already working on me.
“You can’t reject her” she said, making my eyes drift to her.
“I will” I frowned.
“You shouldn’t”
“Why?”
I should’ve just let Avery cook.
“Cause… I wouldn’t do the same to my mate”
“Why?” my tone completely changed. I was hurt. Wasn’t actually expecting that.
“Cause it’s not right”
“Who cares about what’s right” I chuckled.
“Me” she shrugged “You were made for Tessa… Not me”
“No”
“It’s the truth”
“No”
“Dylan. I have a mate… And you have too” she said, wiping a tear that fell out of her eyes “What we did earlier… Confessing our feelings… Kissing… Was… wrong. It was-”
“Meant to happen… Paring Tessa and I… That’s what’s wrong!” I corrected her, almost yelling.
She took a step back, trying to widen the space between us but I pulled her back to me by her shoulder. She frowned, pushing me by my chest, trying to break free from my grip.
“You don’t understand” she said, struggling.
“No… You don’t!” I yelled back, getting pissed. My heart was aching.
No. No I won’t let you leave me Avery. We’ve gotten this far. Tessa’s not a threat I promise.
“Promise not to reject her” she didn’t bother arguing.
I remained quiet, trying to think of ways to end this conversation but nothing popped in.
“Please” she begged, removing my hand from her shoulder and holding it with both of hers.
“I can’t” I didn’t let any tear fall.
“Please…” She whispered then held my other hand, tears streaming down her cheeks.
I bit my lower lip then looked down.
I looked away, I couldn’t bare the sight of her crying. I agreed, knowing I’d regret.
She smiled then let go of me “Thanks”
“I never said I’d accept her though” I added
“You will… eventually” she faked a smile then started walking away slowly.
I won’t…
Why now? Damnit!
Liam’s POV
I walked into the mall… Wanting to buy more sweat pants cause I keep ripping them when transforming during practice.
Someone bumped into me immediately I stepped in.
“Are you bli-” I shut up when I saw who was standing in front of me.
“Avery?” I whispered,
She was crying.
I’m sure my shock reflected in my eyes.
I’ve… Never seen her cry… She’s one of the toughest girl I know… And that’s what I admire the most about her… I hate her.. but I still find her cool.
She felt embarassed… I could tell.
“I’m sorry” she apologized, not even looking at me. She looked pissed and that drew my curiosity.
“What…” I stopped myself from asking what happened, realizing we aren’t actually friends.
She left.
I just stood there… Lost I guess. I felt bothered for no reason.
I couldn’t even shrug off the worry.
———————————————————-
A week passed without Dylan or Avery showing their faces at school.
Tessa looked more depressed than usual… Not like I care… That girl has a problem that noone’s noticed yet. I could tell.
She’s ugly on the outside and in as well.
Some people call her an angel but I see her as trouble. I know she’s fake.
School was boring now without Avery… That girl brings life to everything. To an extent, I missed her trouble.
It took Dylan months to finally show up in school and the day he did, something interesting happened.
Dylan rushed out of class and Tessa followed but couldn’t keep up, so she stopped and yelled “I’m your fucking mate! Not Avery! Me! No one can ever love me more than you do… And no one can ever love you more than I do!” She yelled with tears in her eyes.
Dylan looked irritated “Love?.. there’s nothing love going on between us”
The whole school watched them
“I feel nothing… I mean nothing for you… You think this mate bond affects me? No” he growled at her.
“You love me Dylan… You just don’t know it”
Poor girl
“I don’t care about you… Why don’t you understand. I’m in love with someone else. Not you… Please just leave me”
“I can’t”
He face palmed, he looked too irritated to bare…. At his own mate?
“I was made for you”
“I wish you weren’t made then. My wolf doesn’t even care about you. What can’t you understand? This mate thing is a clear mistake!” he yelled.
“Dylan” Avery said out of nowhere.
Everywhere went dead silent.
When did she show up?
I turned to look at her.
We made eye contact in a second.
Then a wonderful smell hit me.
I froze… And she did too.
“I’ve had a mate before”
“She’s our second chance mate” my wolf smiled.
“Mate?” We both said.
