The stranger

Just when Emma was about to get out of the road, the car stopped. She quickly opened the door and jumped in.
“Drive as fast as you can,” she told the man inside. The car started and was out of there in seconds, leaving her assailants behind.
“Thank you so much,” Emma told the man whose face she couldn’t see clearly. “The man they were taking me back to was going to kill me.”
The man did not say anything. He kept driving fast until they were out of the forest area. Soon they reached a small town but the man kept driving. At some point, Emma wondered if she had jumped from the frying pan to the fire. Could the man be worse than Axel? When she remembered who Axel was, she decided it was not possible. Besides, the man seemed human. But she didn’t want to come to conclusions very fast. He could be a warlock.
Warlocks and witches can pass for human since they don’t have any distinct scent. For this man to be so unafraid in that region, he had to have some powers. Most humans did not rescue strangers especially at night.
“Why are you do quiet, despite having a stranger in your car?” Emma asked when she couldn’t keep it in anymore.
“I don’t like talking when I’m driving,” he said. “We shall talk when we get to the city.”
His voice was raspy. He sounded like a kind person so Emma relaxed.
“Okay. I hope you don’t always save strangers at night. It’s very dangerous. You never know what people are like.”
“I can take care of myself.”
Emma glanced his way. A car passing by flashed its light into their car. Emma noticed that he was very handsome and well built. He was wearing a dark t-shirt that hugged his upper body. She smiled, knowing he couldn’t see her in the darkness. It was true. He could take care of himself.
“I can see that but there are things out there that you may not have the capacity to deal with.”
“Like what? Ghosts?”
Emma chuckled. “Where are you from?”
“I’m from Canada,” he said.
“Now, I get it.” there were fewer super naturals in Canada that USA. Most of those in Canada were those who had moved away from their towns of origin and left their families to go and start lives elsewhere. They did not have strong traditional werewolf, vampire and witch settings there. It made sense why this man was cruising through the area with no fear at night.
“How long have you been in this country?”
“Three months. I got a new job and bought a house in Sen City. I prefer being back home but this job pays a lot.”
“You’ve been in this region long enough for you to notice that something is off. I wonder why you haven’t.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’m a werewolf,” she blurted out.
“Like in the movies,” he said, chuckling. “So can you turn into a monster during the full moon?”
“Exactly.”
“Interesting.”
It sounded like he didn’t believe her. “And those men were going to take me back to my tyrannical mate who recently escaped prison.”
“Next you’ll tell me that there’s a prison for only werewolves.”
“There is.”
“Funny,” he said.
“He rejected me when we met,” Emma said. “Before that, he had killed my boyfriend. After rejecting me, he turned me into his slave and made me and my friends work so much.” Emma remembered Richard and started feeling emotional. He had died because of her. Tears started welling in her eyes but she continued to escape.
“One day, I seduced one of his men and he helped me escape. Then we parted ways because he found his mate. When I was heading to a pack I had friends in, I found this girl who had been kidnapped by vampires. I saved and took her to her pack then fell in love with her brother.”
Emma’s tears were uncontrollable when she thought of the fact that she was going further away from the man she loved her. Returning was too risky to consider, both for her and the members of the pack. Axel was probably angrier than ever after what she did to him. She used her shirt to wipe the tears.
“I hate that I can’t go back to be with him. If I do, Axel will not only kill me, but him and other pack members.”
The man didn’t say anything.
“Life has been so hard for me. I always thought being a rogue was cool, but now I realise it is terrible to be so alone. Tommy used to make it interesting. I think that’s why I loved the idea. I have realised that pack life is so much better. Unfortunately, I will never be able to enjoy that kind of life.”
The man still didn’t say anything, and Emma wondered if he was quietly thinking she was the craziest person he had ever met. Either way, she needed someone who could listen to her. A part of her was glad that he chose not to interrupt her. As they kept going, she began to wonder if he was keeping quiet because he was a bad person. What if he was a serial killer who was more than glad to have a damsel in distress in his car?
Soon, they reached a city and Emma was glad that they reached safely.
“This is Sen City,” the man said. “Since you don’t have any money, you can spend the night at my house.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea for me.”
“So where should I drop you? I don’t have any money with me right now. I have a few notes but I doubt they’ll be enough for you to get a good hotel room.”
“I just need some money for food. I’ll be fine.”
“Because you’re a werewolf?”
“It sounds like you don’t believe me.”
“I don’t know what to believe,” he said. “You did sound honest but some details of your story are ridiculous.”
“Whatever,” Emma said. She was reaching for the handle when the car started speeding off.
“Hey, stop the car. I need to get out.”
The man just increased the speed.
