“What are you going to do?” Emma asked her new friend.
“I’m going to perform that can get us all out of here.”
“But you don’t have your powers.”
“True, but I can siphon from other elements. It may not be as strong as my natural power and may not give the best results but I’m quite sure it can get me out of here.”
“Are you saying that you can siphon power from a pregnant woman?”
Casey shook her head and looked around as if trying to find something. “Not just any pregnant woman. Come here.” Emma frowned but went closer anyway. Casey started whispering. “If I have the blood of a witch, a vampire and a wolf, I can use it to create an invisibility spell.”
“How will that help us get out?”
“I don’t have time to explain,” Casey said. She looked around again and went towards one of the corners. There was a heap of trash there. Casey picked up a soft metallic tin and started tearing it apart. When she had three parts, she gave one to the pregnant woman and another to Emma.
“I need your blood,” she said to them.
“Are you sure this will work?”
“Not a hundred percent but it’s worth trying,” she went and brought a small plastic tin. She cut herself and bled into the tin.
Emma hesitated for a while before cutting her palm and giving up some of her blood. The pregnant woman did the same. As they applied pressure on their wounds to stop the bleeding, Casey carried the container to the corner she’d found the trash.
Suddenly, the door opened. Casey hid the blood behind her and looked at the door. A man came in with a tray full of bread. He placed it down and went out. The frail women all moved towards it. Some got up while one of them crawled. They started eating fast, forgetting about everybody else.
“What are you fools waiting for?” one of the women asked Emma. “They only bring this food every other day so you better eat up.” the pregnant woman went to pick up a slice but Emma remained focused on her friend. The other women needed the bread more than them anyway.
Casey was holding her hands over the plastic container with blood. Her eyes were closed and she was chanting certain words. Suddenly, there was a bright red glow over the blood. Casey’s mouth opened wide and she looked up at Emma.
“Is it working?”
“It’s going to work,” Casey said, standing up.
“Stand up everyone,” Casey said.
The other women stared at her like she was crazy.
“Oh sorry, I mean those who want to get out of here. If you want to stay, I don’t care.”
Casey dipped her middle finger into the container and touched the blood. She removed it and drew a circle on Emma’s forehead. She did the same for the pregnant woman. The other women started standing up one by one, including the one who had mocked them. She was the last to stand up. Casey drew circles on all their foreheads using the blood. She then stood in front of them and started chanting. Suddenly, the entire room glowed for two seconds. Casey smiled widely.
“It’s done,” she said.
“What?” Emma said. “I can still see you.”
“All of us can see each other, but no one can see us. Well, unless they’re a witch looking for us.”
“Really?”
“Yes, but this will only last about two hours,” she said. “Let’s hope someone comes in before the time elapses. If it happens, we shall be able to leave.”
For the next thirty minutes, no one came in. the door did not open and they were all starting to lose hope. Emma lay on the stone floor and tried to sleep. She had been about to drift off when the door opened.
A guard stood there for a moment, frozen.
“What the hell?” he said, turning to another who was standing there. The women ran and stood by the side of the door.
“Where are they?” the two guards walked in. all the women used the chance to run out of the room.
“Don’t stop until we are out of the castle,” Casey said. “They might close the doors.”
Thanks to the bread, even the frail women had some energy and were able to run. It didn’t take long to find the stairs leading to the main floor of the castle. Thankfully, the main door was nearby. Casey opened it and they all rushed outside. One of the women fell but Emma ran back in and lifted her up before carrying her out. Her heart was beating like crazy as she crossed over.
“What the hell?” a female vampire who was smoking outside exclaimed. “I swear that door just opened by itself.”
“Maybe you should stop smoking that,” her companion, a middle aged man said. “If its making you see things, you should try something else.”
Emma ran out of there before she could hear the woman’s reply. When she was about to cross into the forest, she looked back and saw a number of guards running into the castle. She caught up with the group and they ran deeper into the forest. They found a river and decided to take a rest there.
One of the emaciated women picked up a discarded plastic bottle and headed for the water.
“I’ll help you,” Emma said, fearing that the woman would fall into the water.
“I’m so sorry that I said so many negative things about you two,” the woman who had mocked them said. She had tears in her eyes. “Thanks to you, we are finally out of that hellhole. I can never forget you.”
“It’s alright,” Casey said. “We understand that you said those things because of the conditions. Had we stared their longer, we would have become pessimistic too.”
“I really appreciate it. I heard you saying that you don’t have a pack, Emma. If you need a place to stay, you’ll welcome to my pack. We’re quite rich and even if you don’t want to stay, I can give you all the things you need to start a new life somewhere safe.”
“Thanks but I think I’ll go back to the last pack I was staying with. I have unfinished business there.”
“You will?” Casey said excitedly.
“Yes, you made me see things in a different perspective and I think might go there. First, I’ll go with you to your place. I have nothing now.”
“It’s alright.”
“Yeah, go fight for your man.” Another woman said.
“Life without drama is not life,” another added.
Twenty minutes later, the older women went off, hurrying to reach their respective packs before the invisibility spell wore off. The pregnant woman was not sure about returning to her pack while she was carrying the vampire king’s baby. In the end, the three of them went to Casey’s house.
