The party goers gathered around us, forming a circle and holding their breaths wondering what alpha Aragon’s next move would be. Aragon and I stared at each other. My fists were clenched and ready for battle. Although I was scared, the alcohol stench under his breath made me believe I could take him. He looked weaker than the last time I had seen him. Since his pack had been taken away, I was sure he was undergoing a lot of stress.
“You think you’re tough, huh?” he said. “Do you think becoming a luna magically makes you tough? I can see your arms and I’m pretty sure you have not undergone any training yet. How lazy of Ridian to forget to do that before giving you the throne. And how stupid of you to slap me and think you can get away with it.”
I smiled, feeling confident that I could take him. If I could, I knew that all the people who loved me wouldn’t let me die in his hands. They’d kill him before he killed me. “I know how strong I am, and I can’t take you down, Aragon. For what you did to my parents, I promise to finish you off.”
Aragon lunged forward, throwing a punch at me. I easily dodged it and countered with a swift kick to his groin. He grunted in pain and staggered backwards. I used this advantage and threw more kicks and punches at a high speed. He struggled to keep up, probably because of the excessive alcohol he had ingested. His attacks at first were fast, but very clumsy and this eventually slowed him down. He managed to punch me at a couple of places which fuelled me to go harder at him while the crowd cheered and chanted my name. This energized me and I landed a powerful punch to his face, knocking him to the ground. The crowd cheered as their alpha lay on the ground, dazed and defeated.
“Not so tough, after all.” I said as he was helped up by some of his loyal men. He looked down as they took him away. I almost felt bad for him. He had got his ego bruised in front of the whole pack. If Ridian’s attack couldn’t destroy him, I was sure that one would. It had been way too easy to defeat him. I didn’t he would recover from that kind of humiliation. No one was going to respect him the way they did before.
When he was gone, the party continued, this time even more lively and fun than before. Everyone was happy that the man who had terrorised them for so long had been taken down by one of their own. I basked in the attention and admiration, happy than I had done something for my community.
As I danced, I thought of mother and father. I knew that wherever they were, if they were watching, they were proud of me. I wished I’d brought Ren and Rose with me. They would have been so happy. I was pretty sure Ren wouldn’t want to return to Blackmoon pack if he reunited with his friends at Moonshine. He didn’t get along with most of the kids at Blackmoon pack, unlike rose who liked it there.
After the party, I was feeling pretty tired so I went to sleep early. The events of the day had been great but they had worn me out. Nevertheless, I was overjoyed. I planned to return home the next day after taking a tour of the pack. My duties as the luna of Blackmoon pack were waiting for me.
When I was in my room, Ridian tried to mind link with me but I blocked him out because I didn’t want to have to apologize to him over mind link. I wanted to do it physically, so that it could end in a special way that would make both of us really happy. I called Cara on my phone to find out how the twins were doing. I had never been far away from them since we reunited.
The next day, I woke up early. Beata and I had breakfast together before she took me on a tour of the pack territory. I wanted to see all the new and amazing things she had told me about. We decided to start the tour at the fish pond that she had started a year ago.
The pond was in a serene and peaceful part of the thick forest that had very long trees. Water flowed from a small stream and fed the pond. The water was crystal clear, allowing me to see the fish swimming gently below. Lush green vegetation surrounded the pond.
“We have several varieties of fish here,” Beata explained, walking along the edges of the pond. “We have the rainbow trout, co- Hey, did you here that?”
“What?” I said and tried to listen hard.
Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my chest. I looked down to see a wooden stake sticking out of me and immediately stumbled, falling to the ground. Beata knelt down beside me. “Don’t worry. I’ll get this out of you right now.”
It started hurting making me whimper in pain as Beata pulled it out of my chest. Blood flowed from my chest and the pain seemed to grow stronger, which wasn’t supposed to happen.
“It’s not healing,” I said with a panicked expression. Beata tore off a piece of cloth and pressed it against the wound, trying to control the bleeding. “I’ve mind linked some people. Something is wrong. We need to get you to the pack healer soon.” Her voice was filled with worry which made me panic more. The pain inside was growing and I couldn’t feel my body heal as it normally would.
“I think the stake was poisoned,” I said, fearing the worst.
Beata picked me up and carried me out of the woods, running at breakneck speed. I lost consciousness along the way.
