The packhouse

The pack house was bigger than it looked on the outside. There were four floors and so many rooms. Cara showed me all the rooms in the ground floor. They all looked grand, befitting the castle it was. The living room was large. It had golden pillars and a golden chandelier at the centre. The high ceiling was decorated with gold and blue, making it look absolutely majestic, a sight to behold. There were couches placed in three different spots of the room along with glass centre tables. Portraits were hung at different points of the cream coloured wall and grand carpeting covered up the floor.
After the living room was a large rectangular hall with long tables with rows of chairs. On the opposite side was a grand kitchen, pantry and buttery. There was even a fireplace. After exploring all the rooms on that floor, we got on the large stairway led to the upper floors. The upper floors were not as interesting because they consisted mainly of housing units for several people in the pack.
The last floor was grand. It was where the alpha lived alone. It all belonged to him. Since the current alpha did not have a family, he was staying on that floor all alone. I thought it was unfair since some of the pack members had to live on outhouses in the compound. How could he hog all that space? Clearly, he was as bad as I thought.
A while later, we returned to the kitchen where I was introduced to all the equipment I didn’t know well since I was not very well versed in the kitchen department. I got to know more about my role as a personal server. It all sounded very intimidating but Cara said she was going to train me and I would get it easily.
The food for the party had been outsourced to a catering company who had been assigned to a kitchen in one of the other houses so the main kitchen was not as busy. There were two women preparing food for the alpha and his immediate family which included his mother, two brothers and a sister. I didn’t know any of those people but Cara told me I’d easily spot them as soon as all the guests left. I couldn’t wait.
Cara gave me a tour of the compound and told me about every part of the household. Having been confined to the slave quarters for so long, there were a lot of things I had not yet known about the place. I was new to everything. There was even a beautiful flower garden with cute wooden chairs in the grassy clearings among the flowers. It smelled great in there. It reminded me of the garden in our pack where we used to picnic with my mother. Being in that place made me feel emotional so I asked Cara to take me back to the house. Cara picked a red rose and tucked it into her brown hair.
“Nice,” I said.
We made our way out of the garden. By now, the guests had reduced. Only very few people were still around.
“Most people have left,” Cara said.
“Hey, do you know why miss willow ran away?”
“I’m not sure but I think Mark was her mate. He is some guy who came here on a diplomatic visit. He’s from the Crescent pack back in the west. I think she ran away with him. If that’s the case, I don’t think she will return back here.”
“Was the alpha angry about it?” I inquired.
“Duh. Who wouldn’t be? He just organised a grand wedding and she went off without a word. Who wouldn’t be angry?”
“But she was not his mate, so.”
“He loved her, I guess.”
“Has he found his mate?”
“I don’t know. Maybe he did and she’s not worth it. Or not. There are always rumours here, and there. None of us really know.”
We were approaching the back door when I saw a beautiful woman with red curly hair looking out of the windows of the fourth floor. She was wearing a beautiful white dress, and silver jewellery. She looked exquisite. When I looked down, I saw that she was staring at a group of three suit clad men in the backyard.
“Who is that?” I asked Cara.
“That is Camilla, Alpha Ridian’s sister. I told you would know, but apparently you’re not that perceptive. Oh hey, the alpha is back. Hurry, let’s get in.”
She started running towards the door, and I followed suit. “How do you know?”
“Mind link,” she yelled.
“Come on. We have to be there in case he requests something.”
Within seconds, we were in the kitchen. “By the way, I don’t understand why he requested you specifically out of all the other slaves. You said you might be knowing, so spill.”
I shook my head. “I can’t talk about it.”
Cara sighed while rolling her eyes. “I’ll find out anyway. Keep hiding things from the only friend you might ever have in this house.”
“I swear I would like to tell you, hell, maybe I’ll tell you later. I need to speak to the alpha first.”
“Didn’t I tell you? You are not supposed to speak to the alpha unless spoken to. Our work is to deliver whatever we have to deliver, and do anything he instructs us to do.”
“Anything? Does he usually have a lot of requests?”
Cara raised a brow. “You wouldn’t believe some of the things we are asked to do. There’s a reason this work is reserved for slaves. He wouldn’t do those things to women of his pack.”
I frowned. “Now you’re scaring me.”
“Don’t worry its nothing serious, nothing worse than what Dane used to do. You’re lucky you left that place because I hear Marcus is so much worse than Dane could ever be.”
“Stop bad mouthing everybody and get to work, Cara Girad.” A middle aged brown skinned woman told Cara. “Come and help me wash these vegetables.”
Cara stood up and skipped over to the sink while occupied the stool she had vacated. “I’m not bad mouthing anyone, just preparing the girl. We don’t want her collapsing out of shock during her first shift now, do we?”
“Do the work,” the woman said before turning to me. “And you, don’t just sit there like a little princess. Find something to do.”
Clearly, this was not going to be as easy as I’d imagined.
