The next two days I was back on my feet, I was back to my busy self. Draining my energy, to hopefully get a goodnight sleep. My wolf was back in hiding, he was sad that I decided to dedicate myself to my pack.
Robbie was training my fitness, he was hard on me but playful at the same time. We were laughing as I finally slumped to the ground, he has been nice and patient with me.
“Seriously Robbie… I don’t even get why you still train, aren’t you afraid to burst those muscles?”
“Yeah? You think I’m buffed, don’t you? But you know I have to keep on training to keep them in shape. I had a dream once that they sagged just because I forgot to train….”
I was laughing at his words.
“… seriously, that’s my worst nightmare ever. And I’ve been training every day since then… you know… just in case.”
We were laughing again, but in seconds turned my back to the far corner of the field. I felt like someone or something was watching us.
“What? Did you see something?”
Robbie was quick to grab and shield me behind his body. I was annoyed but stayed quiet, knowing that Grant had assigned him to take care of me.
“I think… I don’t know, probably just some wild animal. My senses are still not in tune, my wolf is… yeah, he’s pining on to the king.”
“And you?” he asked suddenly inched himself closer to me, making me have to lift my face to answer him.
“He left me, remember? And I’m mateless… look, can we not talk about this?”
I turned away, feeling that I was about to crumble.
“Hey I’m sorry…” his voice dropped lower, and he pulled me into his embrace.
For days he had been there for me, helping Laurie and just being silently present. He was watching me from afar, and for the last couple of days helping me train to get my strength back.
“… why don’t we get back and finish for the day? Let’s find Grey maybe he can cheer you up.” He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and we walked back to my place, while his other hand was carrying his training gear. He was being kind and was made feel at ease and comfortable, just like the man I’ve come to know for years.
“I’m hungry…” I whined, making him chuckled and pulled me in closer to him, and kissed my temple.
He looked surprised at himself, as so did I. We stopped, and he caressed my jaw slowly. His eyes looked at me, waiting for me to retreat. I didn’t know why, but I was stunned by his advances that I just stayed still. I kept on looking at him when he slowly lowers his face down and touched his lips to mine.
It was slow and sensual. He lowered his hand to my neck and caressed me with his calloused thumb. His other hand dropped his gear and pulled my body closer to him. It was a strange feeling, he has always been a friend. I had never looked at him in any other way, there had never been any kind of pull to him.
Maybe I was trying to move on, maybe I was trying to forget about him. Maybe I was thinking that he could be my distraction, that he could help me erase my feelings for him. Him.
“I’m sorry… I can’t.”
“No I’m sorry, it’s too soon. Shit Rain… I didn’t mean to. It’s just that…”
He looked guilty enough that I feel bad for him. His tall warrior features would scare anyone, but he was sensitive and surprisingly sweet.
“Rob, you know it’s not you. I’m not good for you… I’m…” my words were croaked, my hands still rest on his very well defined torso.
“Sshh… it’s okay, I’m here for you…”
He pulled my face to rest on his chest and hugged me, he wouldn’t let me go until I sighed and relaxed in his arms.
“Come on let’s get you back into the house. You should eat then rest.”
We were doing exactly that until Grey came to check-in on me.
“Hey, what have you two love birds been doing all morning?” Grey asked, slapping my back playfully.
I glared at him, but he just laughed at us.
“Dude, it’s all over your face.” He smirked at Robbie, then raising his eyebrow challenging me. Trying to sneak a peek at Robbie, I was caught by Grey making him shook his head and let out a small laugh.
“Grey, would you leave him alone. Anyway, Rain said he thinks he saw someone or something back in the field. I’m going to head back there and check it out. Are you good lounging here?”
Grey nodded his answer and slumped down on the couch next to me.
“Guys, you don’t have to babysit me…”
“We’re taking care of you, just have a chat with Grey. I’ll be back in a bit.” Robbie said rubbing my arm, just before he leaves the house.
“He likes you. I knew it.” Grey stated cockily as he bumped his shoulder to mine.
“Grey, just let it go. I don’t deserve him, he should find another… I’m so done loving people. It hurts too much when they leave.”
There, I was finally getting it off my chest. I was too tired of getting played by the universe as if they didn’t have anyone else to toy with.
“Hey Rain… you can get through this. We’re here for you. And if Robbie the buff can pull you out of the brink I’m all for it. I’m not trying to push you to him, but Robbie has a complicated past life. He had the worst past than any of us. If anyone can understand you better it’ll be him.”
His words were cryptic at best, I looked at Grey waiting for more of his explanation but he just stays quiet.
“Seriously Grey, you’re just going to leave me hanging here? what’s his story?”
“It’s his story alright… I’m not going to gossip with you. But he was a mess the first day he came to our pack, it took him years to get to where he is today.”
I didn’t know about this information, I did see him the day he arrived. Don had welcomed him, Robbie didn’t talk much. I just assumed he was the quiet and brooding type, I never think otherwise.
“Yeah, I didn’t think you’d notice him when he first got here, but I was assigned as the welcoming committee and babysat him for his first months with us. He’s one of the good guys Rain believe me when I tell you this.” Grey looked at me in his rare serious manner.
“You like him…” I stated looking back at him, I could see his eyes blinked at my words. It lasted seconds, but I knew there was something more to his words.
“Grey…”
“Look, it’s obvious that he likes you.” He shrugged stating the words like he was trying hard not to let his feelings out.
He was about to say some more when Robbie was back, then he tensed to his presence.
“What?” Robbie asked as we both suddenly stop talking.
“No, I need to get back to the packhouse. I’ll see you guys in the next couple of days.” Grey masked his feeling with his cheerful tone, but I was seeing right through him.
Oh, Grey…
