My heartbeat sped up at his face, and I couldn’t help but flinch away from Vampire’s embrace. The air around us suddenly turned from ambiguous to awkward. Lewis continued to stare at me for a while as if his stare was digging hole in my bones. I instantly shivered from his gaze and averted my eyes. I was just about to say something when I noticed my husband averting his eyes on me and closing the door behind him.
He calmly changed his shoes and put down the bag on the table. The surroundings around us were so strange that I was finding it difficult to breathe. All the time, I constantly went on thinking about Lewis, and his squinted gaze directed at me right when he had entered the living room. I had expected him to say something just now, but instead, he averted his eyes and pretended as if nothing happened. I couldn’t help but be surprised at that.
I was so immersed in my thoughts that I failed to notice a flash of sadness in my husband’s eyes when he was serving food on the dining table awkwardly. Then he took a deep breath before plastering a fake smile on his face. “Vampire, mind having lunch with us?”
His voice was hoarse, and he didn’t even look at me, only staring at the editor. It almost felt as if Lewis hadn’t even seen me and Vampire kissing just now in the living room! Why was this person acting as if everything was normal?! And this man even invited Vampire for dinner!
I couldn’t help but be surprised at that. Did Lewis eat the wrong medicine today? Or had sun risen from the west?
I tilted my head in confusion, but I didn’t say a single word against my husband and Vampire. I kept my mouth shut. Since my husband didn’t want to talk about it, why should I become impatient and knock myself with a hammer in my foot by speaking about it?
I glanced at Vampire. Even he was standing awkwardly at his spot, looking at anywhere but me. Then he scratched his neck and finally said, “No, it’s okay. You guys can have the meal. I’ll head out.”
“No. I insist. I’m sure you still want to talk more about my wife about the book, right?” There was a professional smile on Lewis’s face as he stared at Vampire without blinking.
I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. But hiding behind his back, his fingers were curled up in a fist as nails dug deep in his palms. He was clearly jealous, but what else could he do?
It was just that at that time, I was feeling so awkward that I failed to notice that something was off about my husband.
So after a while, the three of us sat on the chair surrounded by the dining table as my husband went into the kitchen to fetch the food. Just then, Vampire turned toward me and stared at me in shock. “He ignored us, didn’t he?”
I rolled my eyes and sipped water. “Of course, he did. I’m not blind.”
“Then why didn’t he say something? I expected him to lash out on us right there!” Vampire whispered to me when Lewis was still in the kitchen.
I was just about to say something when Lewis came back with soup in his hand along with a few bowls. He served us with an indifferent expression on his face before heading over to the kitchen again.
I turned to Vampire again and whispered, “First thing’s first. How the heck did you meet Lewis?”
He scratched the back of his neck in an awkward way and said, “I was in a bar last night, and met him. He approached me on his own and said that he needed help, and his wife was working under me. I didn’t think too much, but imagine my shock when I saw myself standing in the same neighborhood! Man, I had to use all my power to suppress my expressions!”
I pursed my lips. I sympathized with Vampire at this time. I could literally imagine that scene playing before my eyes. But before I opened my mouth and said something, Lewis came back again and the atmosphere was back to awkward. He sat back after serving us the food and silently used the spoon to sip in the soup.
Me and Vampire exchanged glances and decided to keep silent. At this time, it was better to just shut our mouths than to seek trouble by angering my husband. I still didn’t know whether Lewis was really normal or just pretending to be calm. If it was the latter, I knew for sure that a storm was brewing in his heart that was sure to lash out on me when we would be alone.
For the time being, I decided to ignore what my husband was doing and dug my head in the food. Just when I thought that Lewis wouldn’t say anything, he opened his mouth. “Vampire, can you support Elise and motivate her to write?”
I choked on my food and stared at my husband in disbelief, who was still ignoring me like a plague.
Vampire, who was eating, also choked and wiped his lips. Then he gave a smile. “Of course, this is my work.”
“Then why was she not motivated and depressed for a while?” Lewis squinted his eyes and kept staring at Vampire.
The atmosphere between the three of us again became cold as I felt that my husband’s gaze was enough to freeze anyone. But Vampire didn’t back away. He smiled and said, “We had some misunderstandings, but thanks to you, we solved it.”
For some reason, I felt both of the men on my both sides starting a war by staring at each other. It almost felt as if I was watching a live staring contest right now. I cleared my throat and said, “Can we just eat first?”
Both of them exchange one last cold glance before turning back to devouring their food. Finally, the dining table was silent as if I was the only one eating here, but still, I felt my heart bursting out of my chest when I remembered today’s events.
First, my husband brought home a friend, who turned out to be Vampire, and even left us alone! Didn’t he think that me and my editor would end up doing something he would regret later? I pursed my lips and stopped thinking about it. In any case, they were both here and eating on one table under a single roof.
This was the day I never thought I would witness!
I couldn’t help but let out a giggle as I swallowed the soup. Since Vampire was sitting near me, he was stunned and glanced at me. For a moment, I continued to stare at his surprised expression that changed into a soft smile filled with affection as the man continued to gaze at me.
My heart jumped against my chest. The thump echoed in my ears as a trace of blush appeared in my ears. I knew I shouldn’t look at him before my husband’s keen eyes, but I couldn’t help it. I felt genuinely happy, especially after clearing up all the misunderstandings.
I didn’t know where we would go after today, but I could tell that at least we wouldn’t be strangers. I was fine with being friends too, but I wanted Vampire in my life. Only he could fulfil the dormant desire deep in my heart that continued to make me feel agitated.
When I thought of this, I smiled and lowered my head to eat the food on my plate. At that time, I didn’t know that my husband was already keeping an eye on my expressions from the corner of his eyes, but he didn’t say anything. He continued eating as if nothing happened.
