Suddenly, a thought entered my head. How much did Lewis spend on this diamond bracelet? I glanced at the bracelet that was dazzling in the light, looking so real that my eyes automatically squinted from the brightness. I rubbed the surface and realized that this diamond bracelet must be real!
My eyes widened at this realization. It must be costing a fortune! I glanced at my husband and looked at him in disbelief. “Is it real?!”
He nodded and pursed his lips.
“Where did you get so much money?” I asked in a surprised voice and stared at my husband with widened eyes. I still couldn’t believe that Lewis would do something like that on a whim without even asking me about it before! Diamonds cost a lot more that one could ever imagine, and my husband bought it just to coax me…
My lower lips quivered at the thought. I still knew what kind of job Lewis was doing. He had spent many years to rise his rank, and could only reach up to the clerk’s position. And now when my husband had bought such a precious diamond, where did he get money for that?
Clerk’s position could only offer one tiny bit of money that could be used to sustain life and savings would also be little every month. And if one would have to buy even a piece of diamond with a clerk’s job, they would have to save for twenty to thirty more years to be eligible for that!
But how did my husband get money for this despite having a clerk’s job?! Did he get a loan or something?!
I stared at him in disbelief. Before I could start thinking of weird things like robbing a bank or perhaps even selling kidneys, Lewis thankfully opened his mouth and explained. “It’s the money I got after they fired me.”
My eyes widened at that. Lewis was fired from his job?! Why? Without even asking, my husband could see a big question mark on the top of my head. So he coughed awkwardly and averted his eyes, lowering his head. “To get more profit, I ended up choosing a difficult and risky project. The benefits of success were a lot. I would have gotten a promotion and increment in monthly income. I also would have more time to stay at home. To stay with you…” He turned to me and lowered his head again. “But I guess I was thinking too much. That project was a gone case that was dumped onto my shoulders and I took the bait.”
I frowned. “You couldn’t finish your project?”
Lewis shook his head. “It’s not like that. The project was complicated, but I was still able to finish it on time. It was just that the result of getting hasty was that the clients were dissatisfied and canceled the project! Soo in the end, My bank lost so much money that they even took half of the funds that I had invested in the shares.” He paused as if he didn’t know what to say about this situation and sighed. “With the remaining amount, I bought this diamond bracelet.”
I suddenly felt my throat choking up at this thought. I pursed my lips and said after controlling my emotions well. “Why did you have to buy such an expensive gift?”
Lewis’s gaze flickered at the dustbin for a moment before he averted his eyes. He didn’t say anything, but I could tell what he was thinking just by his action of looking over at the bracelet thrown by him.
I still felt complicated when I thought about it. Vampire, who was supposed to be my everything, and give me blossoming love, walked away with a rich lady in a luxurious car right before my eyes. He didn’t even turn back and glance at me!
And now, Lewis was getting jealous over the cheap bracelet Vampire had given me on a whim. In fact, my husband got so jealous that he even ended up purchasing a diamond bracelet for me that cost him a fortune!
To be honest, I had never seen my husband getting jealous just because someone gifted me something different. Even when we were dating, Lewis was the only person who would give me gifts. So he never had a chance of getting jealous.
But this thing happened too late. I sighed. If I hadn’t met Vampire already and slept with him, I would have been moved by my husband’s behavior today. But now when I had successfully gotten a taste of what it felt like to be in love, I didn’t want to let Vampire go.
Suddenly Lewis walked over toward me and held my hand. His affectionate eyes met mine as I noticed that they had moistened almost as if he was on the verge of crying. I was stunned to see his expression.
“Elise, I wanted to make our life better, and that’s why I had been working for hours in the office. But the only regret I have is that I continued to ignore you just for the sake of money. I shouldn’t have done that. I’m sorry.”
I pursed my lips and averted my eyes out of guilt. Even though these words were touching, my heart no longer belonged to Lewis. And I was sure that even he knew about this very well. But he didn’t move and continued to hold my hand like that.
After a pause, he parted his lips again. “I know you don’t care about this anymore…” His voice was hoarse, and I didn’t dare to glance at him. “But please listen to me this once. I-I really don’t want to…” He paused again and took a sharp breath. “I want to make it up to you. It’s okay if you don’t cook and write your novel all day long. I don’t mind. I would also never force you to tidy up your messy bed in the morning. Do whatever you want and fulfil yoru dream, and I’ll be here to take care of those things. Okay? Just be here.”
I frowned and glanced at his face that almost looked like he was about to cry. I pursed my lips. Lewis just said that he would handle all the household stuff, and that I should leave everything else and focus on writing career. Why did I feel like I was dreaming? I nearly pinched myself just now.
Lewis could see confusion clouding over my eyes. So he opened his mouth again and urged a few words to coax me. “I want to be a good husband now. Okease forgive me for my past mistakes. I just don’t know what to do anymore, but what I do know is that I need to become a bettter person before it’s too late.”
I glanced at his face and lowered my head as I nodded at him slowly. Since Vampire had decided to ruthlessly break my heart, I guess I could give Lewis a second chance. After all he did bring me such a costly gift and even said he was sorry.
This was the best thing he could do for me.
